  • Florence, Italy Part 1

Welcome to Dr. Mary Travelbest’s 5 Steps to Solo Travel Guide

The FAQ is: My friend Jean asked about recommendations for the best rental car deals.

Today’s Destination is Florence, Italy. Part 1

Today’s Misstep- Legal troubles: I was caught in Florence without a bus ticket and fined 42.5 euros.

Travel Advice: Bring an umbrella for shade

FAQ: My friend Jean asked for recommendations for the best rental car deals this year. She says it used to cost more if you picked it up at the airport, but now it’s the opposite.

She’s asking for the best deals, whether AAA, Sam’s Club, Expedia, Kayak, Booking, etc. They all seem extra high to her.

Answer: Yes, the car rental business is doing well these days. I remember when, during COVID-19, I booked a car in Denver for eight days for $32. No longer is that the case. My best thing is to shop around and keep shopping. Finding your best deal may take a few or even 30 minutes, but it’s worth waiting. I have used all the options mentioned here, plus Turo, which is like Airbnb for cars. They all have plusses but check to ensure you have the car you need a few days before you travel. I just checked with my Turo for next weekend in Ohio, and the host says the car was in an accident, so it’s unavailable, but Turo did not inform me. So, I contacted Turo, and they helped me re-book a different car. Expect prices to be high in peak times like summer and holidays and destinations like Chicago. Consider cutting the number of days you're renting your car, so only for the days you need it, and use public transportation, Uber/Lyft, or walking on the other days if possible.

    Today’s Destination is: Sedona, AZ

Today’s Mistake- I bought the wrong ticket online

Travel Advice: Gas up when half full.

FAQ: How can I travel solo while still in a “group”?

Answer: Before or after your group trip, plan some solo time, for just you. That way, when you do get to the arranged activities, you will be ready and prepared. Some people like to warm up by going with just one friend, before they join the group. That’s ok, too.

After your group tour, you may want to spend a few days in the same region to explore other options and see things that were left off the tour. Tourguides generally only show you the best parts of the region. To really experience it, you need some solo trip time, too.

    Today’s destination: Sedona, Arizona

Sedona, Arizona, and the Verde Valley area are 1200 square miles big and are a traveler’s delight. It’s like an oasis in the desert, but lifelike and real. It’s known for spirituality, wellness, and red rocks.

Sedona’s magic goes back to history and legend. It may have been linked to early Aztec or Mayan occupation thousands of years ago. The earliest native artifacts—such as pottery and weavings—found in the area date back to as early as the 7th century. Later, tribes were present, including the Hopi, Navajo, and (YA—VA Pie) Yavapai.

Cliff houses are worth exploring such as Sedona’s (pal at kI) Palatki Heritage Site or nearby Montezuma Castle. Way back in the 16th century, the Spanish called the local in-dig in us) Indigenous people Sinagua, which means without water. Sedona is named after the wife of TC Schnebly, the founder in modern days of the area.

Today’s Travel Advice-Gas up when half full

Check the gas gauge when you get in the car. Make sure you have enough. It’s best to fill up early in the day if you can. I try to fill up whenever I am halfway full.

Gas prices have been dropping lately. Use the GasBuddy app or similar method of finding the cheapest gas in your neigbhorhood.

  • In this episode: FAQ is: I get lost all the time, so how can I travel without getting frustrated and upset? I want to have fun and not fear making a mistake.

    Today’s Destination is: Bremerton, WA

Today’s Mistake- Mixing up my cities in Washington State

Travel Advice: Stuck in your planning?

FAQ: I always get lost, so how can I travel without getting frustrated and upset? I want to have fun and not fear making a mistake.

Answer: Like you, I get lost all the time. I’ve got a terrible sense of direction. How bad? If I leave a hotel room, I usually walk the wrong way out the door, which tells me I am not noticing the direction when I should.

What is a sense of direction? According to the dictionary, a Sense of direction is knowing one's location and performing wayfinding. It is related to cognitive maps, spatial awareness, and spatial cognition.

Given that, I’ve still traveled around the world solo and can help you deal with this issue. My personal experience is as a teacher. I admit my faults and weaknesses but don’t let them get the best of me. I make the same number of errors but don’t get distracted or upset.

I will try to be more self-aware of direction, and in the meantime, you can do the same with me.

    Today’s destination: Bremerton, WA

I spent Easter vacation near this area, and it was beautiful. It was chilly compared to San Diego, but it was sunny, and it felt crisp to be hiking and enjoying the outdoors air.

You will likely come from the Seattle airport, about a 90-minute drive, or you can take a ferry. Ferries are popular ways to get around the area, and I took a Fast Commuter Ferry from Port Orchard to Bremerton. Let’s back up a minute here.

From SeaTac, you can also take the Kitsak bus to Bremerton. It makes several local stops along the way, but it’s frequent, and you don’t need a reservation from the airport. Just pay the driver and jump on the bus. If you rent a car, consider the traffic you will face in Seattle and be patient.

Either way, look at the maps and the ferry routes as you navigate the area. You will discover a lot of water, islands, and sound here.

Bremerton sits on the Kitsap Peninsula, overlooking the Puget Sound. It’s a city with strong links to Seattle, well-known for its charming neighborhood restaurants and coffee shops, beautiful parks, and fascinating naval museums. You'll find plenty to do to pass the time in Bremerton, WA, with visitors of all ages able to enjoy the city’s scenic nature trails and family-friendly eateries. The top 6 things to see are?

    1. USS Turner Joy Museum Ship

    2. Puget Sound Navy Museum

    3. Manette Bridge

    4. Illahee State Park

    5. Kitsap Forest Theater

    6. Purple Scent Lavender Farm

I had a great dinner while walking around the downtown areas, observing the influence of Quincy Jones and the music scene. I could also see the snow-capped mountains in the distance, which was a beautiful and peaceful vision. In the spring, look for lilacs, daffodils, tulips, and other blooming beauties.

If you are looking for some off-the-beaten-track places, check out Ollala. There is a winery and cidery here. You can see the history of a sanitarium, where a murder happened by starvation. You can go clamming here with a day license. I met Gregg Olsen, the author of several books and a clam expert. Another touristy town is Manchester, but you will miss it if you sneeze. Manchester State Park has some great hikes with military mines, which you can observe. There are barbeques, shelters, and hiking trails here.

Today’s Mistake- Mixing up my cities in Washington State

I was mixing up my B-cities in the Seattle area. I was confused about Bremerton and Bellingham. I’ve now been to both cities, and they are very different. Sometimes, you need to be there in person to get a feel for and understand what the city is all about. You’ve heard about Bremerton here. Let me know if you want to learn more about Bellingham, and I will do a podcast about that, too.

Today’s Travel Advice-Stuck in your planning?

The planning can be just as much fun as the trip itself. Are you stuck in your travel planning? My team is working on a new helpful tool to make your planning more of an adventure and tangible experience instead of a drudge. It’s a workbook that my daughter, Tina, and I have been discussing for two years. Let us know what you want to see in a workbook for solo travel. • Today’s Destination: Chickamauga National Park: Part 2 of Chattanooga episode.

Today’s Misstep- Driving over hills, a tire came at us

Travel Advice: What exercises should I do when I travel?

FAQ: What do you wish you knew before booking your flight?

Response: A few more questions you can ask someone before you plan your trip are:

Did you experience any frustrations related to the destination or the actual traveling?

If so, what should people be aware of to avoid those frustrations, hopefully?

What websites or services were the most helpful for planning/booking your trip?

What advice would you give someone going there for the first time?

What was the most enjoyable or relaxing part of your trip?

Today’s destination: Chickamauga National Park Part 2 of the Chattanooga series

It’s officially called Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park near Lookout Mountain. Use your National Park Pass for free entry.

    http://cityofchickamauga.org/

When I first visited Point Park, I explored this area on the border of Georgia and Tennessee for about an hour. It’s across from the visitor center and was built by the Army Corps of Engineers.

You can see artillery from the Confederate fighting.

The Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863, marked the end of a Union offensive in southeastern Tennessee and northwestern Georgia called the Chickamauga Campaign. The battle was the most significant Union defeat in the Western Theater of the American Civil War. It involved the second-highest number of casualties in the war, following the Battle of Gettysburg. It was the first major battle of the war in Georgia.

The battle was fought between the Army of the Cumberland under Maj. Gen. William Rosecrans and the Confederate Army of Tennessee under Gen. Braxton Bragg, and was named for Chickamauga Creek, which meanders near the battle area in northwest Georgia (and ultimately flows into the Tennessee River about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) northeast of downtown Chattanooga)

There is also a monument to peace, The New York Peace Monument, symbolizing reunification and reconciliation.

    http://cityofchickamauga.org/about-history-chickamaugabattlefield.asp

Look for marble and pink granite materials. Visit the museum at Ochs Memorial Observatory for views of the Chattanooga area from the terrace. You can continue hiking the trails to other scenic views from Lookout Mountain. I first visited this area on a bus trip with my high school friends in the 1970s, and this was my first visit to return.

I drove the two hours from Atlanta through some small towns and highways and finally to some neighborhoods and scenic drives. When you get to the neighborhood, you will drive on windy roads that take your breath away.

This is a Step 1 or Step 2 destination and easy to explore independently. There is also a cute Visitor Center with restrooms and a small museum. The awe-inspiring view from Lookout Mountain Battlefield over Point Park shows a bird' s-eye view of the Tennessee River and how it bends, a bit like a foot at the ankle. You see the city of Chattanooga from above when you go around the bend. You can even see the three bridges that cross the river to the town.

The battlefield here was memorable, and you can follow the signs for the Chickamauga Battlefield Tour. Or you can just enjoy walking the grounds around the peace monument and listening to the birds chirping. It’s an excellent way to enjoy your day in Georgia or Tennessee.

    http://cityofchickamauga.org/about-history-trainmuseum.asp

Today’s Misstep- Driving on the road over hills, a tire came rolling at us and hit our car.

You’re generally safe from tires in a car, but this tire stopped us. We hit the tire and could not drive any further. We got a tow truck to bring the car home, about 200 miles away. It was an expensive tow, and I hope you don’t have that experience.

Today’s Travel Advice- What exercises should I do when I travel?

Try to stay as active as you are when home, which means you should try to maintain the same levels of activities, even if you are on the road a lot. You may need to take frequent breaks in your drive to stretch, walk a bit, and even do more intensive exercise. Stretch every two hours on a plane or train. I try to find a pool where I can swim anytime I travel. I am a member of the YMCA, where I can go anytime. There are more than 2700 YMCAs in the USA and also in 120 countries around the world. That’s how we both can keep our exercise routines when we travel.

  • In this episode, the FAQ is: How can I take a walking tour when I arrive in a city?

    .

    Today’s Destination is: Chattanooga, Tennessee

Today’s Misstep- Getting stopped by TSA security

Travel Advice: Plan for the unexpected

FAQ: How can I get the walking tour when I get to a city?

Response: A guided walking tour of a city is a treat for a solo traveler, especially for a woman who is interested in its history.

The more popular ones are through platforms like Viator, TripAdvisor, Airbnb, and FreeWalkingtoursbylocals.com, but there are many ways to score a tour from someone who truly cares about the experience for you.

Be sure to read the reviews and book in advance during a busy season. Some are free, and suggest a tip at the end if you liked it. Your hotel could also gook you a tour. The Visitor Center or Tourism office can also give you guidance on this. You may also find a walking tour app for a self-guided tour, with maps and points of interest. You can GPS my city or check Detour. I found some walking tours on YouTube that were pretty fun to watch also.

    https://freewalkingtoursbylocals.com/

    Today’s destination: Chattanooga, Tennessee

My first visit here was in 1974, on a bus of young women heading to Florida. It was called Junior Trip. We were 80 women, two bus loads. I remember very little about Chattanooga from that visit.

I returned to see it in 2024, which made a more significant impression. This time, I was visiting the future Dr. Travelbest, who lives there now. We are currently working on a Planner for travel guidance, so look for that in the future.

It’s a central travel hub, especially for the railroads. A bridge crosses the railroad tracks, which are dozens of tracks wide. It may be one of the largest railroad hubs that I have experienced. You can see the city and the Moccasin Bend from the infamous Lookout Mountain.

Listen to the episode on Chickamauga to learn about President Abraham Lincoln's campaign to gain control of the South in the 1860s. It was a place of both Confederate and Union victories.

    https://www.visitchattanooga.com/things-to-do/

    https://www.visitchattanooga.com/plan/transportation/

The Zoo was a highlight, with a giraffe named George gladly accepting lunch from my hands to his 18-inch tongue. It seems that George loves romaine lettuce. Who would have guessed that? That experience was a treat. Kids like it, too. An assortment of other animals makes for a few hours of seeing wildlife at the Chattanooga Zoo.

Walk across the Pedestrian Bridge and the riverfront along the Tennessee River to get a flavor of the city. I walked the bridge at night, and it was a sparkling river with no watercraft because the weather was rainy and threatened winds. The Northshore District

has trendy boutiques, galleries, and food choices; you can walk everywhere. You can also learn much about the Civil War from an organized guided walking tour of the area.

I did get to see the historic train station, the Chattanooga Choo Choo. Parts of the terminal building were recently sold, so check the show notes for the latest.

    https://www.local3news.com/local-news/preserve-chattanooga-sells-part-of-chattanooga-choo-choo-complex/article_a8d7781e-dbe5-11ee-abba-0b98f22b8f70.html

I also enjoyed Ruby Falls and will create a special episode about that destination soon.

On my next visit, I plan to Explore the Tennessee Aquarium and dive into the fascinating world of marine life at one of the top-rated aquariums in the country. From river otters to penguins, the Tennessee Aquarium showcases various aquatic animals.

I did a few hikes on this trip, but most of the days, it rained, so I will return and hike more. Chattanooga is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. You can go hiking on nearby trails like Stringers Ridge or Raccoon Mountain or try rock climbing at the Tennessee Wall, if you have that talent, or just go and watch the climbers.

Next time I come, I may also Attend a Performance at the Tivoli Theatre: Catch a show at the beautifully restored Tivoli Theatre, which hosts concerts, Broadway shows, and ballets.

My last item on the next time list is to Relax at Coolidge Park: Spend a leisurely afternoon at Coolidge Park, located along the riverfront. Picnic in the grass, ride the antique carousel, or simply enjoy the scenic views.

Today’s Misstep- Getting stopped by TSA security

How did I know that carrying a squash in my bag would keep me from getting through security the first time? It took an extra five minutes to get my bag checked. And then I did it again. I brought a squash on a second trip, and TSA stopped me for a short while Next time, don’t bring fresh squash on the trip in your carry on.

Today’s Travel Advice- Plan for the unexpected.

There’s no such thing as being fully prepared, so prepare for what could happen, and in your mind how you may deal with that.

  • In this episode, FAQ is: What are etias visas, and when are they required?

Today’s Destination is: Estes Park, Colorado

Today’s Mistake- I am not a foodie, but I love learning about new foods. I need to be braver.

Travel Advice: check your loyalty points and miles frequently for errors

FAQ: What are etias documents and when are they required?

Let’s make it simple: it’s not a visa. It’s a visa waiver. Starting in 2025, the ETIAS will be required for Americans traveling to Europe. US citizens can travel to the Schengen Area for up to 90 days without a visa. From 2025 on, visa-exempt non-EU nationals, including Americans, will be able to register with ETIAS before departure. This is not a visa but a visa waiver for travelers. It does require registration, not a visa.

    https://etias.com/etias-launch-pushed-to-2025

The ETIAS visa waiver for Americans is a multiple-entry travel authorization valid for three years. During this period, U.S. travelers can enter any Schengen zone European countries that apply to the travel authorization as many times as necessary.

The total stay allowed in a Schengen country with each entry with ETIAS is 90 days within every 180 days. ETIAS permits travel to Schengen countries for short stays for tourism, business, medical treatment, or transit purposes. To stay for more extended periods or other purposes, American citizens must apply for a visa from an embassy or consulate.

    https://www.etiasvisa.com/etias-requirements/americans

Today’s destination is Estes Park, Colorado

Drive to Estes Park from wherever you are in Colorado as it’s the Rocky Mountain National Park entrance. I’ve been coming here since the 1970’s, and it’s consistently delightful.

Try the Trail Ridge Road, the highest paved road in the US, and the most famous scenic drive in Rocky Mountain National Park—a day trip not to miss through high alpine tundra panoramas! Even driving up to Estes Park from Colorado's Front Range is scenic.

    https://www.colorado.com/cities-and-towns/estes-park

If you want to get to Estes Park from Denver or vice versa, you can take the Bustang from Denver's Union Station. From there, it stops at Westminster at U.S. 36 and Sheridan Boulevard before ending at the Estes Park Visitor Center. Check the show notes for fares and schedules, especially seasonally.

    https://ridebustang.com/fares/

I’ve been there in the spring and the fall for the best leafy color and excellent weather.

If you like hiking, you will want to try it out here. Three words to describe are Beautiful, Colorful, and Rustic.

From boating on Lake Estes to soaring up the aerial tram, touring historical sites, to savoring sips at local breweries and distilleries, this small mountain town doesn't disappoint. While summer is the prime season, there are special events, concerts, and festivals.

Camping is accessible from your car, or you can hike more remotely. I’ve been camping and hiking here in spring, summer, and fall. It’s a Hiking paradise, so let me know if you do. Don’t forget to look for the State flower: (name it) Columbine, it’s purple.

    https://www.visitestespark.com/

Today’s Mistake- I am not a foodie but love learning about new foods. I need to be braver.

Trying to eat like a local. I have not tried too many new foods. This year, I plan to be more adventurous with my eating, within reason. I don’t want a lousy meal to ruin a good day. I will eat some foods, but not turtle blood. What someone else likes may not be for me.

Today’s Travel Advice-check your points and miles frequently for errors

Do you have many saved points or miles? Look them over and book your next trip now while you can. You can also donate them to a friend or a charity. You can also use them. Book a standard room on points, get a suite upgrade, and pay a bit extra.

  • Today’s Destination is: Akureyri and Northern Iceland

Today’s Misstep- My hostel was self-service, and someone was in my bed.

Travel Advice: Be on time if you are on a tour.

FAQ: How do I navigate the city bus system when I don’t speak the language?

Response: I traveled around the world for 90 days, and most of the time, I did not speak the language of that country. I had some challenges riding the bus in some cities; for example, Reykjavik, Iceland, was a minor disaster. You can use travel apps like Rome to Rio for bus or train travel guidance. You'll be able to get to the station early so that you can ask other people about the timing of the bus. In Goa, India, I waited at an unmarked bus station, but it never came, so I took a chance with a motorcycle taxi. Later that day, I waited at another bus station and was unsure where the bus would go, left or right. No one spoke my language. I finally got on my first of 4 buses to my destination. In hindsight, a taxi would have been a better option had one been available. Most of the time, you will get on the right bus, and you will be able to get to your destination. If you’re not in a hurry, even better. Enjoy the experience and travel light.

Today’s destination: Akureyri and Northern Iceland

On my around-the-world trip, I had planned to drive the Ring Road in Iceland for 7 days, the final destination on a 90-day adventure. After many months of planning and reserving a car rental, I canceled with about 2 weeks' notice and decided to fly to the northern part of Iceland for a 4-day trip instead.

I bought a round-trip ticket to Akureyri, and the airport to get there was tiny, so small that there was no security screening for passengers. There were about 40 people on the plane.

Once I landed, I discovered there was no bus service to town, as it was not profitable. I hitched a ride to the cruise ship terminal with some airline pilots from Denmark who were with Viking Cruises whom I met on the plane. The terminal for boats was much busier than the one for planes. Five colossal cruise ships—mega-ships—were docked in town. I met a cruise ship passenger, Kelly, from Long Beach, California, sitting on a bench. She was retired, single, and had no kids. She broke her ankle, and walking the stairs is challenging for her now. She was sweet to meet.

The town has only 20,000 residents.

When the cruise ships left town, the city became peaceful and relaxed.

What did I do those days? It was a great adventure, as I had booked a hostel near a bus stop and Netto grocery store. I took a day trip to Lake Myvatn, the fourth-largest lake in the country. We saw the Godafoss, the waterfall of the Gods. I explored some caves and volcanic areas from afar. While there, I witnessed a long-distance run of 100 kilometers. The run starts at midnight, and I could watch the runners up close and even be at the finish line for several of them. How exciting. I also enjoyed the public pools with the locals every day I could. I felt like a local and explored the hikes and neighborhoods on the city bus.

    https://www.visitakureyri.is/en/see-and-do/events-festivals/sulur-vertical

Today’s Misstep: My hostel was self-service, and someone was in my bed.

In other words, there were no administrative people there at all.

When I arrived, someone was sleeping in my bed. That was disturbing because there was no one to ask for help. The person was sound asleep and sick, and they would not move to another bed. I had five other roommates, but I did not want to take one of their bunks. So, I went swimming in a nearby hot tub instead and relaxed.

That night, I sorted it all out. The other roommates, who were from Germany and China, were kind and friendly, which made it all worth it.

Today’s Travel Advice- If on a tour, be on time.

You may need to hitchhike if you miss your guided bus tour, so don’t be late. The driver may need to pick up passengers at another stop or drop off others. You can’t keep them waiting, so synch your alarm to return to the tour when needed.

  • FAQ: How do I make small talk when you are on the road with a stranger?

    Destination: Louisville, Ky

    Today’s Mistake-Getting lost in Louisville

Travel Advice: Pack half your suitcase with giveaways and gifts.

    FAQ:

How do I make small talk with a stranger when you are on the road?

Start small with a question or comment about the weather, date, location, or event you are both at or have just attended. Do they seem to have something in common with you? You can gently ask how they are doing today.

    Today’s destination: Louisville, KY

Derby is on the first Saturday of every year in May.

I’ve attended several of them with friends and always had fun. I miss those days, but still love the races. Churchill Downs is the place to visit when in town as that’s where the race takes place, the fastest two minutes in sports ever!

Even if you can’t make the early week races, get dressed up and place your best. Check out Thurby Oaks, which is an alternative to Churchill Downs.

On Derby weekend, you can go bourbon tasting or whatever. Be sure you get your big hat! Follow the rules regarding what you can bring.

My friend and I always celebrated with a Mint Julep, even if not at the race. What’s the recipe?

The four ingredients to taste are mint leaf, bourbon, simple syrup, and crushed ice. Once, I did not have a mint leaf, so I used oregano, which went over badly. It was a hoot!

    https://www.letsgolouisville.com/kentucky-derby-tips

Visit the museums on Museum Row, including Louisville's own Muhammed Ali Museum, the Frazier Kentucky History Museum, 21C Museum Hotel, KMAC (the Kentucky Museum of Art & Crafts), and Roots 101 African American Museum, all within proximity. The Speed Art Museum is also a fantastic contemporary art museum in Old Louisville.

Stroll through beautiful Old Louisville, or take a guided history tour with Louisville Historic Tours to learn all about the local architecture and history.

Take a food tour with Louisville Food Tours and experience the story of Louisville one bite at a time in the most scenic neighborhoods in town. You'll learn all about the city's history while enjoying the sights, interspersed with stops at fantastic local eateries for food and drinks. With just 1.5 miles of walking spread out over 3 hours, it's the perfect balance of activity, history, and eating and drinking.

Louisville has a fantastic theatre scene! Check out what's playing at Actor's Theatre, or if you're visiting during the summer, check out the Kentucky Shakespeare Festival, the longest-running free Shakespeare festival in the country. Another fantastic entertainment venue is PLAY, a gay nightclub hosting drag performances and Queer-owned theatre productions.

Take a sunset cruise on the beautiful Ohio River aboard Louisville's historic steamboat, the Belle of Louisville.

Explore NuLu and shop at the local boutiques and gift stores in the NuLu neighborhood. It's a small area, about 2 blocks, but full of locally owned businesses. My favorite is Revelry, a gift shop and art gallery featuring unique creations by Louisville artists. Right across the street is Women Owned Wallet, a shop featuring only women-owned and created products. There are also two bourbon distilleries, Angel's Envy and Rabbit Hole! If you're spending the day in NuLu, book a NuLu Food Tour with Louisville Food Tours. Their 3-hour daytime tour features food that represents the culinary heritage of Louisville and Kentucky, and they also offer an evening bourbon food tour in NuLu, which treats bourbon as if it were wine and explores pairings of food, bourbon, and bourbon cocktails.

Today’s Mistake- Getting Lost in Louisville

It was the night of the Kentucky Derby, and my college friends were all there, staying near Churchill Downs. One friend drove their motor home out to a bar after the event, and they left me behind by mistake. I did not have the address of where I was staying before cell phones, so I found a policeman and told them what happened. They helped me get “home” for the night.

Just as I walked in the door, they noticed I was missing.

Today’s Travel Advice: Pack half your suitcase with giveaways and gifts. Then, you will have room for your extras and souvenirs when you go home.

  • "Solo Journeys in India: Navigating the Transport Tapestry via tuk-tuks, trains and planes….”

Welcome to Dr. Mary Travelbest’s 5 Steps to Solo Travel Guide for women like you who need extra support traveling the world (slowly), one woman at a time.

Please rate this podcast and the Amazon book series, especially Part B on Destinations!

I’ve been traveling solo since 1972 and writing about it since 1993. Now you can experience the Top Selling Book Series: 5 Steps to Solo Travel, a Woman’s Guide to Travel and Destinations in Her Prime, found on Amazon. I recently took a 90-day trip around the world, and this is a special episode on Indian transportation for the solo female.

What are the challenges faced by solo female travelers in India? How can they navigate the transportation system in India? What are the travel tips for exploring India's transport networks as a solo female traveler?

This particular podcast edition is about the "Roads Less Traveled, including a few Solo Female Travel Tips for Exploring India's Transport Networks"

There was a massive train crash while I was in India, and many people were tragically killed. The people I was staying with had friends on those trains, but they were ok. Many of my family members contacted me across the miles to see if I was ok, as it was world news. See the show notes for more on train accidents.

    https://www.indiatvnews.com/news/india/yearender-2023-tragic-accidents-in-2023-road-rail-accidents-odisha-coromandel-express-andhra-pradesh-train-collision-tragedy-latest-updates-2023-12-22-908419

The world’s largest populated country has transportation challenges. Corruption, bureaucracy, and red tape are also issues. Corrupted officials leverage their control over permits to line their pockets. Income equality is massive. The wealthiest 10% makes up almost 60% of India's income. The future looks brighter.

One airline, Go First, went out of business after I bought my ticket in May 2023. I cannot get a refund because the airline is bankrupt and, therefore, will not honor any purchases of their flights, nor will the ticket agency through which I bought it.

    https://www.hindustantimes.com/business/go-first-gets-two-financial-bids-as-part-of-its-bankruptcy-process-101708754354934.html

I arrived in Chennai from a flight originating in Cambodia and transferred through Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I spent 8 hours in the airport, talking to people from all over the world. Here is a rundown of the travel I did over two weeks in six cities in India.

When going through airport security, you must be on an all-female line. Men and women are not allowed to go through together.

The same thing happened when I went to the Taj Majal. Separate security stations were established, and I even hit my head on that going through, as I am 5’ 10’, so I am taller than most other women.

Overall, I made many transportation mistakes, but they were all to help you make a better trip next time.

My travel mistakes in India: I was lied to by a taxi driver, had a driver with no shoes and no change, got scammed in the main Delhi train station, and had trouble finding a bus to Agra.

  • "Savoring Solitude: Women's Guide to Eating Out Alone While Traveling"

"Table for One: Dining Tips and Tricks for Solo Female Travelers"

You have three meals a day, and you are solo. What do you do to enjoy these meals by yourself? You can have some great times if you follow these tips, or maybe you can add more tips for other travelers.

Eating out alone can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience for solo travelers, including women aged 60 and above. Here are some tips to make dining alone more comfortable and enjoyable:

Choose the Right Restaurant: Choose restaurants with a welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff. Look for establishments that cater to solo diners and offer comfortable seating options. You can find them on websites before you go or make reservations. When I was in Florence, Italy, I asked the hostel for a recommendation for a pizza restaurant, and they said Gusta was the best. I got a pizza for myself and a second one to return to the hostel, and I was greeted with a massive hug

Avoid busy or Peak Hours, so ask if you’re unsure which they are. Consider dining during off-peak hours to avoid crowds and long wait times. Lunchtime or early dinner hours are often quieter and more relaxed, making it easier to enjoy your meal in peace. I ate an early dinner in Chennai at a local diner. I asked for no chilis, but it was still spicy hot with chilis. I managed to eat it along with my peanut butter.

Bring a Book or Electronic Device: Bring a book, e-reader, or smartphone to entertain yourself while waiting for your meal. Reading can help you feel more comfortable and confident dining alone. I listen with earbuds and enjoy podcasts and my recordings of conversations with my mom, who died years ago when I travel.

Engage with the Staff: Discuss with the server or bartender if you feel comfortable doing so. They can provide recommendations, share local insights, and make you feel more at ease. A smile will get you started, and after that, just ask a question you may have about the food, the restaurant, or the city. In the Philippines, in El Nido, my server/bartender explained to me that he was a temp worker and he was finished with his shift. His pay included room and board.

Sit at the Bar: Sitting at the bar can be an excellent option for solo diners, offering a more casual and interactive dining experience. You can chat with the bartender or fellow patrons and enjoy watching the action in the kitchen, which can be very entertaining to a solo traveler like me. One restaurant chain lets you sit in the kitchen to watch the meal preparation. See the show notes.

    https://www.indiatvnews.com/news/india/yearender-2023-tragic-accidents-in-2023-road-rail-accidents-odisha-coromandel-express-andhra-pradesh-train-collision-tragedy-latest-updates-2023-12-22-908419

Practice Self-Confidence: Remember that dining alone is nothing unusual or embarrassing. Hold your head high, exude confidence, and enjoy the freedom to choose where and what to eat without compromise. I sometimes talk to myself to build my confidence when solo eating.

Stay Safe: Be mindful of your surroundings and trust your instincts when dining alone. Choose well-lit and populated restaurants, avoid sharing personal information with strangers, and secure your belongings. Don’t leave your purse on the back of your chair.

Celebrate Solo Dining: View dining alone as an opportunity for self-care and empowerment. Treat yourself to a delicious meal, savor the experience, and celebrate your independence as a solo traveler.

FAQ: What questions should you ask someone you know who traveled somewhere you like?

Destination: San Francisco Airport "Wings and Wanderlust: Solo Female Traveler's Guide to SFO"

Today’s Mistake- I left my phone on the airline counter at the SFO airport.

Travel Advice: Relax in the Airport Yoga Room, if in SFO anyway….

FAQ: What questions should you ask someone you know who traveled somewhere you like?

    Answers 1 or 2

    1. Ask the right questions if you want to get good responses to your questions about others' travels. Instead of “How was it?” ask something new and unique.

“Would you like to revisit those places or any other part of the country?" would be an excellent question.

    OR

    2. If you could only re-live five minutes of the trip, which 5 minutes would it be?

    https://thewanderbug.com/how-was-it-10-better-questions-to-ask-a-traveller/

    Today’s destination: San Francisco Airport

I began my around-the-world journey at the San Francisco airport, SFO, which was the first stop on my journey. I’ve been a fan of this airport for many years, as it has been the gateway to Asian countries I have visited for many years.

You can fly to 130 destinations on 50 airlines from SFO.

It’s always been welcoming from the minute that I landed. There’s just something special about it. Maybe it’s the excitement of being in San Francisco, one of the most visited cities in the world. There’s so much to see and do here. It’s also effortless to get to and from the airport via BART. I’ve flown there many times for domestic flights, too. Often, my flights take off at night, so I’ve been able to enjoy an extra day in and around the area of Northern California and then can sleep on the plane. Traveling west is more manageable due to jetlag than going east.

When in the airport, I always look to explore the Art Exhibits: SFO has a renowned art collection scattered throughout its terminals. Take a stroll to admire various sculptures, paintings, and installations. You may find one on history, even if it’s just of the SFO airport itself. Check the show notes for links to the current and upcoming exhibits.

    https://www.sfomuseum.org/exhibitions

    https://www.sfomuseum.org/exhibitions/upcoming

I like to visit the SFO Aviation Museum and Library at the International Terminal, which features fascinating aviation history and cultural exhibits, such as early pilots and planes. If you are a solo female, you can browse here without feeling alone and explore flight history.

Enjoy a Meal or Snack: SFO has the spectrum, from casual cafes to fine dining establishments. Since you should arrive at least 3 hours before an international flight and 2 hours before a domestic flight, you will be likely to find time to eat something while here.

If you need to take a nap, there’s a place to do that, or shower, or just freshen up, for a fee.

    https://www.airporttravelagency.org/freshen-up/

Shop for Souvenirs: Browse the shops and boutiques at SFO to pick up some last-minute souvenirs or gifts for loved ones. I especially like walking in airport bookstores and the magazine sections of convenience stores.

Take in the Views of the airport: Find a comfortable spot near a big glass window to enjoy panoramic views of the airport runways and the surrounding landscape. I also enjoy people-watching. It’s a place to see all kinds of reunions, babies, and seniors who need or give a smile.

Get Pampered at the SFO Spa: Treat yourself to a spa or massage at one of the airport's wellness centers. Relax and rejuvenate before continuing your journey.

    https://www.flysfo.com/passengers/travel-tips

Read or Relax in a Lounge: If you can access airport lounges through your airline or a membership program, enjoy comfortable seating, complimentary snacks, and Wi-Fi access. It's an excellent way to unwind in a quiet environment.

Stay Connected: SFO provides free Wi-Fi throughout the airport, allowing travelers to stay connected with family and friends or catch up on emails, social media, movies, or TV shows.

Stay Active: Take a walk around the terminal to stretch your legs and get some exercise. SFO's terminals are spacious, with plenty of walking paths and seating areas to explore.

    https://www.flysfo.com/faqs

Today’s Mistake- I left my phone on the counter in SFO.

I was on my way around the world and left my phone on the airline counter after my first flight. Was that ever a scary moment! Don’t do what I did. Hold your phone all the time, or tie a string to it!

Today’s Travel Advice-Yoga for travelers in SFO

Solo travelers can Relax in the Yoga Rooms: SFO offers designated yoga rooms in multiple terminals where travelers can unwind, stretch, and find inner peace before or after their flights. It's a perfect spot for relaxation and meditation. Sunday to Saturday, it’s open from 4 am to 11 pm and free of charge in terminals 2 and 3.

FAQ: What do you do when a significant change in weather interrupts your travel?

    Destination: Osaka, Japan

Today’s Mistake- My global entry card has my name wrong.

Travel Advice: Use AI when planning your next trip

FAQ: A Facebook group member asked us, “What do you do when a significant change in weather interrupts your travel?”

Answer: Unexpected weather changes are not uncommon, but they can still pose a challenge when traveling, especially when solo. If I were faced with a sudden shift from sunny and warm to rainy and cold weather while on a trip, I would adapt my plans to make the most of the situation.

I would check for appropriate clothing to stay warm and dry in inclement weather, including wearing layers of sweaters, jackets, waterproof outerwear, and sturdy shoes that can withstand wet conditions. Keeping myself comfortable and protected from the elements would be my top priority.

You check your notes and look for indoor activities or attractions. Instead of outdoor activities, I would explore museums, art galleries, historical sites, or cozy cafes to enjoy a warm drink and engage in leisurely activities like reading or people-watching.

If the rain isn't too heavy and I'm feeling adventurous, I might also consider embracing the elements and going for a scenic drive to admire the beauty of the landscape shrouded in mist and rain. Exploring coastal areas or scenic routes known for their dramatic views could offer a unique perspective and create memorable moments despite the gloomy weather. I recently visited Ruby Falls in Chattanooga, and the waterfalls were even better since it was raining.

By maintaining a positive attitude and adapting to the circumstances, you can turn an unexpected rainy day into an opportunity for unexpected discoveries and new experiences.

    Today’s destination: Osaka, Japan

After being in the country for a while, I flew from Sapporo to Osaka, Japan. I found some castles, temples, and day trips from here. Osaka, Japan, offers a wealth of experiences for solo travelers, including

Visiting Osaka Castle, one of Japan's most iconic landmarks. Explore the castle grounds, gardens, and museum, and learn about the region's history.

Stroll Through Dotonbori: Experience the vibrant atmosphere of Dotonbori, Osaka's bustling entertainment district. Stroll along the canal, admire the neon lights and sample local street food.

Discover Japan's oldest official temples in Osaka. Explore the temple, gardens, and pagoda, and soak in the serene atmosphere.

Osaka is known as the "Kitchen of Japan" and is famous for its delicious street food and local specialties. Try savory pancakes), (octopus balls), and sushi, of course.

Treat yourself to a relaxing spa day at Spa World, one of Osaka's largest and most famous hot spring complexes. Enjoy soaking in various themed baths, saunas, and relaxation areas.

Dive into Osaka's past at the Osaka Museum of History. Explore exhibits showcasing the city's cultural heritage, including scale models of historic buildings and interactive displays.

Consider taking a day trip from Osaka to nearby destinations such as Kyoto, Nara, or Kobe. These cities offer unique attractions and are easily accessible by train from Osaka.

On my next visit to Osaka, here are some things I would like to do.

    1. Spend time shopping in Shin-sai-bashi, Osaka's premier shopping district. Explore the countless shops, department stores, and boutiques, and pick souvenirs or gifts.

    2. Take a River Cruise: Enjoy a scenic river cruise along the Okawa River, which runs through the heart of Osaka. Relax onboard a sightseeing boat and admire the city's skyline and landmarks from the water.

    3. Experience Traditional Theater: Attend a traditional Japanese performance such as kabuki or bunraku puppetry. Check local listings for performances and venues offering English subtitles or explanations.

    4. Explore one of the world's largest aquariums, Osaka Aquarium Kai-yu-kan, and marvel at its impressive marine life exhibits. Highlights include the Pacific Ocean tank and the interactive touch pools.

Today’s Mistake- My Global Entry card has the wrong name for me.

When you get your card, check the data carefully. My screening went well, but the admin spelled my name wrong on the card. I didn’t notice until I got home; it was too late to fix that. So, I hope to get it right next time. I just was notified that my card expires soon, so I am trying to get it fixed. Don’t make my mistake. Check right away.

Today’s Travel Advice-Use AI when planning your next trip

If you are a solo traveler and want to see what others recommend you visit, check out one of many AI tools to see some suggested itineraries. Chat GPT from Open Ai gave me the following advice, which I have edited.

First, I asked it to give me three main reasons why a woman in her 60s would use Chat GPT to help her with travel. Those three main reasons are personalized guidance and support, travel insights, and safety with security advice. I think these are good to dive into a bit here. I use AI in many daily activities, especially if they are not critical. I use it to create songs and even a clone of my voice. So here are a few reasons to use AI in your next travel planning. When you plan a solo trip, you can get the perspective you asked for, precisely what you wanted, in seconds. If you are seeking a destination recommendation, you will find it, whether it’s for senior-friendly accommodations, accessible hiking trails, or safety tips for traveling outside of a tour group. If you are looking for transportation options, cultural norms, or local customs, you can ask ChatGPT for insights. You also can ask for tips on avoiding scams, staying vigilant in crowded areas, and navigating unfamiliar surroundings. But be sure to get clarity on any hallucinations because ChatGPT has been known to make some big mistakes. Don’t believe everything you read. You can always ask Dr. Travelbest for help.

  • Today’s Mistake- I was a stunt woman at Universal Studios and ended up in the hospital.

Travel Advice: Always pack a bathing suit.

Today’s destination: National Park Foundation and Service

I support the National Park Service in the USA by purchasing a yearly wall calendar. The images are beautiful. I also have a Senior Pass, which you can get for your lifetime, starting at age 62. Buy it at any park or online. Don’t lose it. It’s worth a lot for your traveling. Membership has its perks! That includes free admission.

Have you been to Yosemite? Yellowstone? Are there any other parks? Which are your favorite?

Here are some tips on getting in and having a great visit.

Making reservations and listening to park guides will help. You might even want to get a job working at a national park someday.

National parks offer many experiences, from serene hikes through lush forests to breathtaking vistas atop rugged mountains.

To begin your journey, it's essential to establish communication with the national park you're interested in visiting. Most national parks have dedicated websites with comprehensive information about park amenities, activities, and contact details. Additionally, you can contact park authorities via phone or email for personalized assistance and guidance. The show notes have websites to visit.

When contacting the park or websites, consider inquiring about the following:

Accessibility: As a mature traveler, it's crucial to ensure that the park's trails and facilities are accessible and accommodating. Inquire about wheelchair accessibility, availability of senior-friendly trails, and any other amenities tailored to older visitors.

Health and Safety: Prioritize your well-being by seeking advice on health and safety measures within the park. Ask about potential hazards, such as steep terrain or extreme weather conditions, and gather recommendations for staying safe during your visit.

Lodging and Accommodations: Depending on the duration of your stay, you may require lodging within or near the park. Explore your options for accommodations, including campgrounds, lodges, cabins, or nearby hotels, and make reservations in advance to ensure availability.

Activities and Attractions: National parks offer many activities catering to diverse interests and physical abilities. Whether you're keen on leisurely nature walks, scenic drives, photography, or wildlife observation, seek recommendations for activities that align with your preferences and mobility.

Guided Tours and Programs: Consider joining the park's guided tours or educational programs to enhance your experience and gain insights into its natural and cultural heritage. These tours often cater to individuals of all ages and provide informative commentary from knowledgeable guides.

    https://www.nationalparks.org/explore/parks

In addition to seeking guidance from park authorities, here are some general travel tips.

Pack Wisely: Be mindful of the weather conditions and pack appropriate clothing, footwear, and gear for outdoor adventures. Consider carrying essentials such as water, snacks, a first-aid kit, sunscreen, and insect repellent.

Plan Your Itinerary: While spontaneity adds charm to travel, having a rough itinerary can help you make the most of your time in the park. Prioritize your must-see attractions and activities while allowing flexibility for serendipitous discoveries. I planned my visits the day or two before for most parks, but if you are heading to a trendy destination like Yosemite or Yellowstone, you must plan months ahead.

Stay Hydrated and Rested: Maintaining hydration and adequate rest is crucial, especially when engaging in physical activities at higher altitudes. Pace yourself, take breaks as needed, and listen to your body's signals to avoid exhaustion or dehydration.I love my rest time. You should build it into your day, even if it is just to read your notes for the next day’s adventures.

Embrace Nature's Pace: In the serene tranquility of the wilderness, time seems to slow down, allowing for introspection and appreciation of the natural world. Embrace the slower pace of nature, savoring each moment and immersing yourself fully in the present experience. I keep track of the animals I learn about, the geology, and even the smells of the air and flowers.

Capture Memories: Don't forget to capture the beauty of your surroundings through photographs or journaling. These souvenirs will serve as cherished reminders of your adventures in the national park for years to come. Even solo, you can still take a selfie with you and your favorite tree, flower, or campsite at the park. Share your memories on our Dr. Mary Travelbest Private Facebook Group pages.

Safe travels, and may your exploration of America's national parks be filled with wonder and discovery.

Today’s Mistake- stunt woman at Universal Studios, California

I ended up in the hospital. I was offered a role in a fake movie we would make on the tour. I was given instructions on what to do, wear, and act. We were bank robbers, and we jumped into the raging river. Only I jumped in and hurt my foot on the bottom of the river because it was about 4 feet down. I was unable to walk, so I was given a wheelchair and brought to the nearby hospital for a check-up. I did not want to stay there, so I asked to leave, and my friends drove the car home for me. That’s the only time I went to Universal Studios. If you are asked to be a stunt woman, think twice before you raise your hand.

    Today’s Travel Advice-Always pack a bathing suit.

It’s the most miniature outfit you will pack; you never know when you need one. Buying one on the road is hard, especially in a National Park.

  • In this episode, FAQ is: When do I need a mask?

Today’s Destination is: South Goa, India

Today’s Misstep- I left my credit card behind.

    Travel Advice: Get a massage

FAQ: When do I need a mask in 2024

Guidelines for wearing face masks vary depending on the current status of the COVID-19 pandemic and local regulations. It's essential to stay informed about the latest guidance from health authorities such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and other relevant local health departments.

The need to wear a face mask can depend on factors like the prevalence of COVID-19 in your community, vaccination rates, and new variants. Additionally, guidelines may change in response to emerging data and public health considerations.

It's common for health authorities to recommend wearing face masks in crowded indoor settings, in hospitals and health care offices, on public transportation, and in places where social distancing may be challenging. However, these recommendations may change, so it's crucial to check for the most recent guidelines from reliable health sources.

    Today’s destination: South Goa, India

South Goa generally has a tropical climate, with the peak tourist season being from November to March when the weather is more relaxed and dry.

Monsoon season, from June to September, brings heavy rainfall, and some beach activities may be limited; I was there in early June, about two weeks too late for ocean swimming.

I stayed in an Airbnb, and my host was downstairs and ran a beauty shop. Her boyfriend ran the nearby restaurant. I walked to pretty much everywhere while I was visiting. It was a slow pace, but I liked that.

    Beaches:

South Goa is known for its pristine and less crowded beaches than the northern part of the state. I found the beaches dirty, and it was monsoon season, so swimming was out of the question in June.

Famous beaches include Palolem, Agonda, Colva, and Benaulim. I stayed near Bogmalo Beach. It was laid back, had a local feel, and was close to the main Goa airport.

Careful of coconuts falling on you. The winds were strong, and palms plus coconuts were falling fast. I had to cover my head at times to make sure that I did not get hit.

    Water Sports:

Based on the season, many South Goa beaches offer water sports such as parasailing, jet-skiing, and banana boat rides. Make sure the water is safe before you swim.

    Cuisine:

South Goa offers diverse cuisine, including delicious seafood and traditional Goan dishes. I’m not a food expert, but I ate fresh fish and fruits daily.

South Goa, India, is known for its serene beaches, vibrant culture, and historical attractions. Here are some recommendations for things to see and do in South Goa besides the beach. See a wildlife sanctuary, waterfalls, basilica, churches, art museums, and the Naval Aviation Museum by the airport.

What is there to do for a solo traveler? My recs are Kayaking, paddleboarding, swimming, yoga, and walking on the shore for sunsets.

I had a lovely massage from Ranjini, who owns the shop with her husband. I had hoped to swim in the resort pool on the beach, but that was also closed due to monsoons.

An aviation museum was one of my favorite places in South Goa. You can now discover the history of aviation in India at the Naval Aviation Museum, located adjacent to the Dabolim or main airport. I viewed vintage aircraft and learned about Indian Naval Air history, where people asked me for selfies. The electricity went out, which meant the air conditioning, too. It did not go back on for the hour more that I was there.

Remember to check the current status and accessibility of these attractions, as conditions may change. South Goa offers a perfect blend of relaxation, cultural exploration, and natural beauty.

  • In this episode, FAQ is: Amanda asked me, How can I increase my brain power, mental memory and travel better?

Today’s Destination is: North Goa, India

Today’s Misstep- Tripped on a curb going up.

    FAQ: Response

For solo travelers, Improving brain power, memory, and cognitive capacity while traveling involves a combination of lifestyle habits, mental exercises, and proper nutrition. Here are some tips that enhanced my cognitive abilities on the go:

    Stay Hydrated:

Dehydration can impair cognitive function, so drink enough water throughout the day.

    Healthy Nutrition:

Consume a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Foods with antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins can support brain health.

    Adequate Sleep:

Ensure you get enough quality sleep, as it plays a crucial role in memory consolidation and cognitive function.

    Physical Exercise:

Regular exercise increases blood flow to the brain, promoting the growth of new neurons and improving overall cognitive function.

    Mindful Breathing and Meditation:

Practice mindfulness techniques and meditation to reduce stress, improve focus, and enhance cognitive abilities.

    Cognitive Training:

Engage in brain exercises like puzzles, crosswords, chess, or memory games to stimulate neural connections and improve memory.

    Learn Something New:

Challenge your brain by learning a new language, instrument, or skill. This stimulates neural plasticity and enhances cognitive flexibility.

    Limit Distractions:

Minimize distractions to allow your brain to focus on the task at hand. Use noise-canceling headphones or find quiet spaces when needed.

    Socialize:

Engage in conversations and social activities. Social interactions stimulate the brain and may help improve memory and cognitive function.

    Take Breaks During Travel:

If you're on a long journey, take short breaks to stretch, move around, and refresh your mind. Physical activity can help maintain alertness.

    Stay Curious:

Cultivate a curious mindset. Stay open to new experiences and ideas, stimulating the brain and promoting continuous learning.

    Mindful Observation:

Pay attention to your surroundings during travel. Engage your senses, observe details, and try to remember them. This can improve observational skills and memory.

Remember that consistency is critical when adopting these practices. Incorporate them into your daily routine, and you may notice improvements in your brain power, memory, and overall cognitive function, especially while on the move.

    Today’s destination: North Goa, India

North Goa is known for its lively beaches, vibrant nightlife, and historic sites. Here are some of my adventures solo and on a budget. This is a Step 5 destination.

I arrived in North Goa from the Panaji airport and immediately found the beaches inviting, but unfortunately, not swimmable due to the monsoon weather conditions. If I had been here 15 days earlier, I could have been swimming in the ocean. I stayed in the Pinnacle Holiday Homes for two nights, with floor-to-ceiling glass windows and a view of the fields in the distance. Lush. The pool for swimming made this hotel a great venue. They cooked my breakfast here, and I went shopping along the road. They only accepted cash at this hotel. Two nights, including breakfast, was $64.00. I went to several beaches, including Calangute and Anjuna, which are both vibrant and laid back. I spent time at Baga Beach, famous for its nightlife, beach parties, and water sports activities. Baga Beach is a hub of entertainment with numerous clubs and shacks. This beach was dirty. I ate at the St. Francis Restaurant, people wanted selfies with me. The cows came right up to the restaurant for food or scraps.

I could see several Portuguese forts, waterfalls, and bird sanctuaries here. I also got a ride on the back of a motorcycle to the Goa Museum. I was waiting outside my hotel for the bus in the midday heat. None came. Finally, a motorcycle taxi driver stopped and sold me on a ride with him, and we agreed on a price. He later realized he did not know the area we were going to. He stopped 6 or 7 people to ask for directions. Finally, he dropped me off at the museum in an industrial area. At least I was safe. The museum was stunning and memorable. After my visit, I had no transportation to my next destination, South Goa. I got a ride from Subodh Kerkar, who founded the museum. He was a physician turned artist, and his museum was dedicated to his works. He exhibited many repurposed bottles, copper, paint, and natural materials created into sea art.

After 4 bus rides, I made it to South Goa, so hear more on the next episode.

to summarize, North Goa is a dynamic region with many beaches, historical forts, vibrant markets, and entertainment options, making it a favorite.

Today’s Misstep- Tripped on a curb going up.

I was in the center of Florence, near a cultural site, reading about it on my phone while standing near a curb. I stepped once, but that was a curb, so I fell on the ground. That hurt. No one was watching me. I checked myself out. Cuts, bruises, and humility hit hard. I got up and was surprised at how much I hurt, but mostly it was my pride. It was July 4, and I had been traveling for two months with one to go. Was I going to retreat? No, I kept going and made the most of it. I rested for the day and was back on my path the next morning.

  • This episode's FAQ is: Do I need a local SIM card?

Today’s Destination is The Dead Sea and Masada, Israel

Today’s Misstep- Screenshot your MAP before you travel

Travel Advice: Wear a money belt.

FAQ: Do I need a local SIM card?

Response: When you travel abroad, you don’t need a local SIM card anymore. It’s found in nearly every airport and is expensive, but you get your own phone number. It does involve opening your phone up.

Read the show notes if you want to try an esim and need help. I’ve been using an esim called Airalo for a year, and I have a referral code for you to save $3.00. It is MARY2856.

Today’s destination: Israel (split into three parts, Jerusalem, Dead Sea/ Masada, and Tel Aviv. This episode is part 2 of three.

Because I was a solo female traveler, I booked a full-day tour of the Dead Sea and Masada. On my tour, I asked, “Where is the West Bank”?

I learned that it originally meant West of the Jordan River. Now, it is a shared space between Israelis and Palestinians. There are three settlement types here. Palestinian, Mixed, and total Israeli control has about 13 million people living there.

The land also has date trees, vineyards, and olive trees. With advances in agriculture, the soil has been cleansed from salt, so trees grow abundantly. There are many vegetables and greenhouses with drip irrigation, and I was told that cherry tomatoes were invented here.

Masada is part of Rift Valley. Masada is the last Judean stronghold not taken by Romans. In 70 AD, the temple was destroyed and never rebuilt.

Nine hundred thirty-two people went to Masada to escape the Roman Empire and lost. How did the Romans win? They built a ramp, had a catapult, and knocked down the wall.

A gondola brings you to the top of the mountain now. You see storage rooms with places where date trees grew. There were plenty of touristy things to do here in Masada, but the history made it come alive today for me.

The lake is dried up, mostly, with remnants of where the water used to be. Jordan Valley is 450 meters below sea level. Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered here.

Want to ride a camel? You may pay 20 shekels to ride and another 50 to get off.

West of the Jordan River, 13 million people, primarily Arab, Jews, and mixed.

Businesses are harvesting minerals and creams from the Dead Sea. For example, we stopped at a factory where Ahava is sold; sunscreen is $50. Mud is also sold here for $13.60. The mud comes directly from the Dead Sea in a bag. They say it is suitable for your skin. I did not purchase any.

    https://www.ahava.com/pages/about-us

People from around the world travel to the Dead Sea to bathe in its water and to cover themselves with its mud to relieve symptoms of skin conditions, including psoriasis and eczema, as well as rheumatoid arthritis, cardiac disease, respiratory illnesses, and more.

The Dead Sea has no fish. That’s not a joke because it’s poison.

Spend 20 minutes maximum in the water—no splashing, drinking, or tasting. Don’t get in your eyes. Don’t wet your head. Dangerous. My genital area was burning, so I think I was more sensitive than others. I didn’t stay in very long as my private parts were uncomfortable. While getting in and out of the water, I got two minor scratches on my hand. The mud felt oily and slick.

  • Today’s Destination is: Tel Aviv, Israel

Today’s Misstep- Missing a smooth transfer from one transportation mode to another

    Travel Advice: Carry a pen

FAQ: One of our Facebook group members asked for locations where she could live for 3-9 months in 2025. She wants tips on renting her condo, renting abroad past the AirBNB. She says she is open to anywhere, walkability, airport nearby, public transportation, and pools for swimming are her priorities. Can I help her?

Yes. Those are some great questions. First, where could you live? Next, rent the condo and then rent something for yourself abroad.

Living-Pick the area you like based on your tastes. I’d select Southeast Asia now because it is reasonably priced and relatively safe, and many English-speaking people live there.

Renting your condo- Finding the right person could be a lot of work. So ask your friends first. Who needs space for up to a year? Work out an arrangement to be away for that period and make a contract, even if it’s a friend. Tell as many people in advance as possible so they can spread the word.

Renting abroad- ideally, you could do a house swap. However, that may be difficult. You could also be a pet sitter or house sitter. Line up yourself for one of these options now if you can. You may look into sabbaticalhomes.com

Today’s destination: Israel (split into three parts, Jerusalem, Dead Sea/ Masada, and Tel Aviv. This is part 3 of three.

You will likely arrive at Ben Gurion Airport, which is very modern. It’s easy to get around Tel Aviv by train, tram, or bus. I stayed in Jerusalem for my first 5 days in Israel and explored the coastal regions.
