On this episode, the Distortion Dads look at one of the most infamous subgenres in all of metal. A subgenre surrounded by controversy and corpse paint. We look at 8 genre defining bands who were all a part of a second wave of the subgenre. What bands did we choose? One has put out 19 albums but hasn’t played live in almost 30 years. Another band had one of the most influential EPs, but because of turmoil surrounding the band, their debut album came out 7 years later. We introduce 6 new-to-us bands, one of which has less than 100 monthly Spotify listeners and another who’s theme involves a World War. We end the episode with listener reactions to 14 of our DDDDs that we read aloud to each other. All that and more as we introduce you to… Black Metal!

Today's Distortion Dad's Wheel of Subgenres episode looks at a decade or more of changes in the sound of metalcore beyond what we already spoke about in Metalcore Part 1. How does Metalcore part 2 differ? We look at 8 genre-defining bands who put out their first albums from 2005 to 2016 and are still putting new music out today. Who are they? One just did a collaboration with Ed Sheeran, another jump started their career thanks to a Taylor Swift song. We introduce 6 new-to-us MC2 bands - one of which just released their debut album this year and another that uses an instrument not commonly heard in metal. We end the episode by choosing 6 DDDD for volunteer listeners to react to and read them to each other live. Will they like what they hear? And what will be our next metal subgenre to explore? The Distortion Dads jump into their second subgenre and quickly realized that they had their work cut out for them. After tons of research and placing bands in waves, part one is here. This episode explores the bands that were integral to the "first wave" of Metalcore, including the Massachusetts Metalcore Scene and others from around the country. They also found new bands that resemble this "first wave" and share the reactions of those with minimal to no experience in the subgenre. So, sit back and enjoy the ride.
