I can die happy. Rafa and Kevin said this episode made sense and that the whole *concept* is good. Damn I needed that. Please tell a friend, just something as simple as "I listen to a really parasocial wine podcast and I think you'd like it." Stuff like this is , to me, greater than all the wine in the world. If you tell a friend let us know and we'll send you psychic kiss. Go to Red Hook Tavern to see Rafa and drink from his v good wine list. ////LIST////

New guest / America's new favorite green point wine queen Mackenzie Gasset @_baby.cham_ came on to learn and teach about St. Elizabeth of Portugal, connections within the Iberian Peninsula, the Pope's latest goof-up, and, of course, victorian erotic novels. A true barnborner of an episode, I actually believe that this season will live forever. Go visit Mackenzie @PanPanvinovinobk or @nurabrooklyn ////LIST////

SOLO BAD BOYS EP: Welcome to our Portugal season about the cults of saints in Iberia, which I'm sure is exactly what you all wanted. This is explained in the episode, along with why it took us so long to do Portugal and, like, a general outline of how we feel going into this season. It's pretty spooky doing new stuff, but don't worry, we're sneaking Spanish and Catalan wines in each episode to make sure everything is contextualized and to emphasize regional connections, which is apparently, Duck's dumb bullshit thesis. Anyhow, this season is actually going to be very suitable for new listeners (finally), so TELL A FRIEND and consider pledging to our very fun patreon to hear 2 really good interviews a month. //// LIST////

America's number 1 Phish fanatic Tira Johnson came on to talk shit about her least favorite varieties. Too bad the wines accidentally whipped, like they were criminally tasty, so I guess these grapes are good, actually??? Anyhow, this is the part of the season where we reveal that actually the whole point of this was to talk about California and our own burning love and befuddlement with the place. Whoops! Now you have the key to unlock it. Go visit Tira at Ilis and demand a glass full of something Californian. ////LIST////

The bit is that our guest picks the wine for the episode this season. One cab sauv, one sauv blanc. This is not exactly what happened with our esteemed guest, Amanda Smeltz, the inventor of hot honey, but we had a really good time doing conpersion and loving without limits. Xoxoxoxo ////List////

It's the last main feed episode of Austro Thirsty Empire (WINE CLUB MEMBERS... YOU GET A SECRET EPISODE NEXT WEEK, and Patreons there's a few more interviews bopping around) so we thought we'd bring in the BIG guns: Welcome Emily Gutiérrez, possibly NYC's best Central and Eastern European sommelier to the pod. We're talking English Royalty, unveiling new bits, purring, slaying, and contextualizing the shit out of the various Hungarian bits and bobs on the edge of the empire. Full disclosure -- Duck was really worried the wines weren't going to be good, and it actually turned out to be the best lineup of the whole season, so what the fuck does he know. Stalk Emily on instagram @SKANK.OCEAN and go listen to here at One Fifth NYC. ////LIST////

hey, It's Kevin. It's John's birthday and he's in Paris or Rome or something, so here I am, in charge of talking to you about this episode. What a good one! I love when James is on cause I know for a fact I'm the dumbest one in the room. For reference: We were sitting in a triangle shape, I was lounging on the couch and the boys were both at the nerd table. This is optimal Podcasting power for me, as I can better be in control of General Vibes this way, which is basically my primary function when John and James are doing nerd stuff.
The premise of this episode was to get as close to the water as possible, so this basically is an overlap with the Adriatic episode of John's Rosé season. There is some fun here and also some headscratchers. For the record, the one I thought was corked was corked and everyone admitted it later. Fuck those guys, I'm the smart one.
Thanks for listening and all that. We love you.Support the Show.

Hey all! This is what the bonus episodes on the Patreon are like, but there's no way we're gatekeeping this one. Sari Khoury is the winemaker behind the stellar Philokalia wines in the Occupied West Bank, and John was lucky enough to snag a long interview about winemaking under occupation, artistry, different kinds of resistance, cultural memory and the legacy of Islam on European wine culture. Sari, in addition to being wildly smart, is one of the most compelling winemakers we've had the pleasure to taste, so, uh seek out his wines whenever and wherever you can. Also, and this is just our opinion : Keep fucking talking about Palestine and pressure everyone you can to end this genocide.

Kevin is on vacation so Big Sturge stepped up for a v fun chat with Ethan Risinger, King Country mouse about Piwi grapes in the Dolomites and Styria. Duck is literally terrified the entire time, so this is officially off the rails from the get go, but actually ends up getting, dare I say, poignant. Cutting edge wine from some of the best terroirs in Europe? Sounds like, uh, you dorks should be paying attention :) ////LIST////

Sarah Favinger, bassist and wine buyer to the stars joins the boys to discuss the white hot border between Ottoman civility and Hapsburg barbarity. To be incredibly honest, this is probably the most insane we've sounded in years -- sorry Sarah! Hard to overstate how good all these wines were --wines to treasure rather than slam down while doing big depressions, so uh, do as we say and not as we do. Daryl Nuhn, proprietress of Prima and also recent knitting maven, joins the boys to pronounce some truly batshit words like a champion, and also to discuss volcanic wines from the countryside around Budapest. I know this is going to sound like a broken record, but seek out Central European white wines before all the jerks make them $50. Also, PLEASE JOIN OUR WINE CLUB!!!!!!! This is the biggest season we've ever done, and we're really giving it the gravitas it deserves. Sorry for all the Hapsburgs stans, but those weirdos are getting ethered all praise due to Hot Ottoman Crush Suleiman the Magnificent. This episode features three wines from Hapsburg crown lands (lmao borders aren't real) and basically traces how insane this season will get. Please seek out a $35 central European white wine asap. BTW... Uh, we're pleased to announce the Copake Wine Works x Disgorgeous WINE CLUB. 3 wines. One canonical but EXCLUSIVE video episode. DEADLINE FEBRUARY 26th.
