Designers write. A podcast about the role of designers in the climate crisis and all the other worldwide disasters we face. Moderator Aynouk Tan questions designers about their profession on the basis of short essays they have written themselves. Participants in the third episode are the designers Lua Vollaard and Ruben Pater.

Lua VollaardLua Vollaard is a curator and writer with a background in visual culture, human rights research and photography. She is interested in the broad intersection of technology and ideology. Lua is a curator at Stroom Den Haag, holds an MA in Research Architecture from Goldsmiths University, and teaches image theory at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague and at the MA Critical Inquiry Lab at Design Academy Eindhoven. Lua Vollaard’s essay “Artifact Hypermuseum of Earth & Anthropocene Design” is a speculative approach to a future design museum located at – and consisting of – the crumbling and melting ice shelves of Antarctica. The text is analysed by our text curator Marjanne van Helvert.
Ruben PaterUnder the name Untold Stories, Ruben Pater creates visual narratives that support solidarity, justice, and equality. He is the author of the books The Politics of Design and CAPS LOCK. He graduated from the bachelor of graphic design St. Joost in Breda and the master of graphic design at the Sandberg institute in Amsterdam. Ruben Pater’s essay “A better environment starts with ourselves” discusses the pitfalls of sustainable design practices and invites designers to invest their time and talents to end the endless cycle of consumption and destruction. The text is reflected upon by our text curator Aminata Cairo.
Head curator Joeri Pruys reads excerpts from a political speech by Hans Wiebenga given in 1971 to the Dutch parliament. Wiebenga, leader of PSP (Pacifist Socialist Party) which would later became part of the Dutch greens, makes the case that the dogma of economic growth leads to the violation of human rights and the destruction of life on our planet.

Participants in the second episode are the designers Trang Ha and Dirk Osinga.
Dirk OsingaDirk Osinga works as an independent architect and researcher. He graduated in 2010 from Eindhoven University of Technology with a MSc. in Architecture, Building and Planning. Earlier he gained a BSc. in Civil Engineering and Management. Since 2018 he develops his own independent architectural design and research practice STUDIOSINGA. Dirk Osinga’s essay “What design can’t do” is an urgent plea for more modesty in the design sector: solving the world’s problems should not be the task of the designer. Instead, Osinga posits, the aesthetic and pleasurable side of design should be foregrounded more often. The text is analysed by our text curator Florian Cramer.
Trang HaTrang Ha is a multidisciplinary designer and artist. She considers art something constantly uncertain and doubtful, always in the seek for other perspectives. By incorporating other disciplinary and inviting collaborations, she wants to unveil the complexity of the con-temporary and a-temporary scattered in the ever expanding (art) world. Trang finished her BA Graphic Design at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague (NL) in 2020.Trang Ha’s essay, “Of the wrap culture”, uses making and eating a wrap as a metaphor for a more communal, blended, and messy approach to design. Further reflection on the essay is given by one of our text curators, Aminata Cairo.
Head curator Joeri Pruys reads part of an essay by Constant, “Opkomst en ondergang van de avant-garde”, published in 1964 in literary magazine Randstad. Constant was a writer, designer and artists who predicted a future where automation would liberate us all.

Klara DebeljakKlara Debeljak is an Amsterdam-based researcher, artist and designer. She has a BA in Psychology from Charles University in Prague, where her focus was on the various effects of digitalization on society and the morphing concept of community. These topics continue to constitute the core of her work, in particular intimacy and identity in the digital sphere and the role of a citizen. Currently, she is in the Gerrit Rietveld Academie studying Graphic Design. She has had exhibitions in Ljubljana, Prague, Amsterdam and Morocco. Klara Debeljak's essay, "Theory of the Chrono-Ghettos", is a first-person wake-up call from Time itself and reflects on how time and capitalist structures are intertwined. Further reflection on the essay is given by one of our text curators, Florian Cramer.
Silvio LorussoSilvio Lorusso is a writer, artist and designer based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. In 2018 he published his first book entitled "Entreprecariat". He is an assistant professor and vice-director of the Centre for Other Worlds at the Lusófona University in Lisbon. Lorusso holds a Ph.D. in Design Sciences from the Iuav University of Venice. Silvio Lorusso's essay, "Against design synthesis", asks the question: are designers universal problem solvers crucial in dealing with the global crises we face? The text is analysed by our text curator Marjanne van Helvert.
And head curator Joeri Pruys reads a text from the book “Dingen Vormen Mensen” (1972) by design critic Simon Mari Pruys, a seminal work by one of the Netherlands’ most influential design critics.
