Chicago Midwinter allowed us to experience so many helpful products, and this week, we’re going over everything we learned about what SHOFU has to offer dental practices.

🎉We love when Dr. Gurian joins us on Humpday Happy Hour™! We’re always so impressed with the ultimate Renaissance Man, who has had one of the most interesting journeys into dentistry we’ve ever seen. Dr. Gurian is the Keynote Speaker at the Oregon Dental Conference on April 3rd, 2025. He’ll be talking about "How To Survive A Career in Dentistry Using Positive Thinking and Humor."
Dr. Gurian is an American comedy writer, stand-up comic, host, author, producer, director, media personality, doctor, Assist. Clinical Professor at N.Y.U. in the Oral Medicine-Oro-Facial Pain Department, lecturer, and Spiritual Healer. Seriously, what doesn’t he do?!
He is a former cosmetic dentist and has been a board member of The Association for Spirituality and Psychotherapy since 1999, where he has lectured on his technique known as "STAR" Therapy™, an acronym for Spiritual, Transformational, Affirmative, Resonance Therapy." STAR Therapy is a way to treat the physical symptoms of stress-related illness, especially Migraine-type headaches, often caused by clenching and grinding the teeth.
As a motivational speaker, he has a very unique approach due to his unique background. He speaks on Happiness, mindset and changing negative thinking to positive thinking. He’s also on the Board of Laugh M.D. whose mission is to bring comedy to people in hospitals and recovery centers. Dr. Gurian is based in NYC.

Dr. Karla Soto is passionate about teaching the impact of having an emotional connection with patients, particularly with the use of Facially Generated Comprehensive Treatment Planning. She has presented in Europe, Latin America and North America on fully embracing the digital dentistry revolution to transform her practice into a more productive and fulfilling experience. As an early tester of the iTero Lumina Pro - she has now seen the power of this new scanner for deepening connections with patients while expanding the use case for scanners in her office.
A bonafide CE addict, she has taken more than 1,500 CE hours and is a member of AACD, AGD, DSD, AACA, LEAD Mastermind, Kois Member, Seattle Study Club and Spear alumni. She is a DSD KOL, Align Global Faculty, Align Doctor Advisory Board, AACA KOL and Propel KOL, and was chosen to be part of Invisalign’s Go Beyond marketing campaign.
Dr. Soto graduated from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry in 2006 and completed a GPR at the Baltimore VA. She currently practices as a cosmetic, implant and general dentist in her private practice in Boca Raton, Florida.

We had the honor of sharing memories of a wonderful man, Dr. Bob Pick, with his good friend and our honorary co-host, Dr. Alan Stern.
There was no one quite like Bob. While most people live for the weekend, waiting for the stress of the week to finally be over, Bob lived for Mondays. He was always ready to tackle whatever came his way with a smile on his face.
As Dr. Stern said so beautifully, Bob’s purpose in life was to make life better for others. He always put everyone else first and considered every person individually, always making time to get to know them and show them he cared. There will never be anyone in the dental education community quite like Bob.
We are so honored to have had him as part of our own story as a friend, mentor & recurring guest on the show. His presence will always be part of the dental community & we will never stop learning from him.

After graduating from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in 1997, Dr. Mead went on to open his own practice in Saginaw, Michigan. He started the Dental Hacks podcast in June 2014, which grew to become the Very Dental Podcast network in April 2021. They currently have over 6 million downloads and counting!
When he’s not dropping knowledge on all things dentistry, you can find Dr. Mead hanging out with his wife and two sons on his 40-acre horse farm or mountain biking.

Dr. Brett Kessler is a Denver, Colorado-based dentist and President of the American Dental Association. He has been an active volunteer leader and member of the ADA for over 26 years. Since 2019, Dr. Kessler has represented the 14th District on the ADA Board of Trustees, and he has chaired several ADA committees, including the Diversity and Inclusion Committee, the Audit Committee and the Science and Research Institute, on which he is currently serving his second term.
Dr. Kessler is also involved in numerous other organizations, including the Metropolitan Denver Dental Society, the Colorado Prosthodontic Society, the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, the Pierre Fauchard Academy and the Colorado Dental Association Foundation, where he was a Founding Chair.
