Orenthal James Simpson (July 9, 1947 – April 10, 2024) was an American football player, actor, and media personality who played in the National Football League (NFL) for 11 seasons, primarily with the Buffalo Bills. Regarded as one of the greatest running backs of all time, his professional success was overshadowed by his trial and controversial acquittal for the murders of his former wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ron Goldman in 1994. Simpson played college football for the USC Trojans, where he won the Heisman Trophy as a senior, and was selected first overall by the Bills in the 1969 NFL/AFL draft. During his nine seasons with the Bills, he received five consecutive Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro selections from 1972 to 1976. He also led the league in rushing yards four times, in rushing touchdowns twice, and in points scored in 1975. He became the first NFL player to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a season, earning him NFL Most Valuable Player (MVP), and is the only NFL player to do so in a 14-game regular season. He holds the record for the single-season yards-per-game average at 143.1. After retiring with the San Francisco 49ers in 1979, he acted in film and television, became a sportscaster, and was a spokesman for a wide variety of products and companies, notably Hertz. He was later inducted into multiple football halls of fame. Brown and Goldman were murdered in Los Angeles on the night of June 12, 1994.

  • Omar Portee became an informant BEFORE building a criminal empire! Portee began his criminal career as a robber at the age of 17. In the early hours of August 16, 1987, he claimed to have witnessed Don Taylor shoot and kill Terrance Joyner in the Bronx. Based on Portee's eyewitness testimony, Taylor was convicted on April 25, 1989, and sentenced to 22½ years-to-life in prison. At the time of his original testimony, Portee was facing multiple charges in New York stemming from his arrest on August 31, 1987. As part of a cooperation agreement, which included his testimony against Don Taylor in People v Taylor, Portee was allowed to plead to two to six years for all charged crimes (two 1st-degree robbery convictions), received credit for 21 months' time served and was promised a favorable letter to the parole board. He started serving his sentence on June 9, 1989. He was released on June 20, 1990. Portee later recanted his prior testimony, and Taylor's conviction was vacated in 2004, whereupon Taylor was released from prison after having served over 10 years.

  • Big Ang Lonardo - My first informant! He may have flipped at the end, but he had a hell of a ride! Part 1 of this series is a recap of what came before, Big Joe Lonardo. Joseph Lonardo (October 20, 1884 – October 13, 1927), also known as "Big Joe", was a Sicilian emigrant to the United States who became the first crime boss of the Cleveland crime family, which he structured from a competing number of organized crime gangs. When national Prohibition began in 1920, Lonardo became a dealer in corn sugar, an essential ingredient in the manufacture of corn whiskey. Lonardo became a "sugar baron" by driving other legitimate corn sugar merchants out of business, encouraging home distillation, and using intimidation, murder, and theft to eliminate or drive his criminal competitors out of business. Lonardo transformed his gang, the Mayfield Road Mob, into a powerful organized crime family. He had the support of the D'Aquila crime family of New York City, and engaged in widespread bribery of local judges, police, and politicians. His criminal organization's reliance on low-quality corn whiskey led to a drop in revenues when consumers began favoring better quality, illegally imported liquor. He began demanding unquestioning loyalty while taking little risk, alienating many bootleggers, home distillers, and organized crime figures. Lonardo's control of the Cleveland mafia was usurped in 1927 by underboss Salvatore "Black Sam" Todaro and the Porrello brothers while Lonardo was out of the country. When Lonardo returned to Cleveland, he attempted to regain control of the Cleveland mafia. His bodyguards were arrested as suspects in the Yorkell and Brownstein murders, leaving Lonardo unprotected. On October 13, 1927, he was murdered in a Porrello barber shop, likely on the orders of "Black Sam" Todaro. His death sparked Cleveland's Corn Sugar War.

Lombardo's illicit career was rooted in the 1950's when he found work as a thug for West Side gangsters. At that time, the Chicago Outfit was thriving and a large cast of characters dominated the organized crime world focusing on prostitution, gambling, loansharking, jewel heists, labor racketeering and the various violent methods of controlling those who executed orders for street crews. On April 25, 2005, Lombardo, along with 13 other defendants was indicted as part of the federal government's Operation Family Secrets investigation, which lifted the veil on 18 killings since the 1970s that federal investigators had attributed to the Outfit. Lombardo was indicted for his role in at least one murder, as well as for running a racket based on illegal gambling, loan sharking and murder. On September 10, 2007, Lombardo was convicted of racketeering, extortion, loan sharking and murder.[23] On September 27, 2007, the same jury found Lombardo guilty of the 1974 Seifert murder.[24] On February 2, 2009, Zagel sentenced Lombardo, seated in a wheelchair, to life in prison for the convictions. Lombardo takes a litany of mob secrets to his grave. He never admitted anything, never showed any remorse for a life of crime and to his last breath, fulfilled the Outfit's blood oath of silence known as "omerta."

Lombardo's ascension to the top rank of the Chicago mob was confirmed by a 1978 photograph that has become know as "The Last Supper" picture. It shows Lombardo dining with the highest ranking hoodlums in the city, including the late godfather Tony Accardo. In organized crime circles, Lombardo was more apt to be called "Lumpy" for his administration of beatings that would result in epidermis lumps on the recipient. He also used the aliases Joe Padula and Joe Cuneo during criminal escapades that spanned more than seven decades.

  • Theodore Roe kept the Policy Racket in the community 'til they killed him to get it Teddy Roe was an African-American mob boss who built an illegal gambling empire in South Side, Chicago during the 1940s and 1950s. He moved to Chicago when he was 31 and got a job with a tailor on the South Side. His employer, Edward Jones, got into the numbers racket or policy game (the early lottery) and Teddy became one his main runners. By 1946 they were bring in $25 million a year and the local Mafia wanted a piece of the action. The Jones brothers said no, so the mob kidnapped Jones, Teddy paid the $100,000 ransom and the Jones brothers promised to get out of the numbers game and relocated to Mexico. Not Teddy! He chose to take over the Jones operation. Roe earned the nickname "Robinhood" because of his philanthropy among the neighborhood poor. In their heyday, policy kings were the black community's banks and employers in Chicago. In the early part of the 20th century, segregation and economic discrimination had a devastating effect on African American communities throughout the United States, and in Chicago and some of the other major cities in the north, the policy industry generated a lot of money to poor black neighborhoods. Policy kings put a lot of their earnings into legitimate businesses such as car dealerships and churches. Aside from running a smooth operation, Roe is remembered for paying hospital bills for newborns, and funeral tabs for the deceased. On one occasion, an elderly woman who had hit the number with one of the shady gangster wheels in town, came to Roe to complain that the gang had not paid her her money for the hit. Roe and some of his boys went over to the men and persuaded them to give her her winnings. He has also been known to walk the streets of poor black neighborhoods passing out fifty dollar bills to needy people. After refusing to pay "street tax" or hand over his illegal gambling empire to the Chicago Outfit, Roe fatally shot a made man who had been ordered to assassinate him. Even though the killing was ruled self defense, Roe was murdered in retaliation by the Sicilian-American Outfit crew commanded by caporegime Sam Giancana on August 4, 1952.

William Donahue was a kind, caring individual whose love for animals and unlimited love for those around him was never diminished by the struggles he faced financially. After working at a cab company for 2 years, his boss approached him about an opportunity to make extra money by continuing his ongoing business he could no longer operate after being arrested and charged with multiple high level crimes. In the next few weeks, Billy would be watched by police, have his name confessed during an arrest, and would ultimately be killed by another employee at the cab company in a robbery-gone-wrong. Today, 8 years later, both the owner of the company and his killer remain free men, having never been so much as arrested for their crimes against Billy. This is the story nobody has heard..until now.

Meyer Lansky Maier Suchowljansky was born in Grodno, Russian Empire (now Belarus), to a Polish-Jewish family who experienced antisemitism and pogroms from Imperial authorities. In 1911, Lansky emigrated to the United States through the port of Odessa with his mother and brother Jacob, and joined his father, who had immigrated in 1909, and settled on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York. Lansky met Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel when they were children. They became lifelong friends, as well as partners in the bootlegging trade, and together managed the Bugs and Meyer Mob, with its reputation as one of the most violent Prohibition gangs. Lansky was also close friends with Charles "Lucky" Luciano; the two met as teenagers when Luciano attempted to extort Lansky for protection money on his walk home from school. Luciano respected the younger boy's defiant responses to his threats, and the two formed a lasting partnership thereafter. The two of them would go on to associate with veteran gangster Arnold Rothstein, up until his murder in 1928. Luciano had a vision to form a national crime syndicate in which the Italian, Jewish, and Irish gangs could pool their resources and turn organized crime into a lucrative business for all – an organization he founded after a conference in Atlantic City organized by himself, Lansky, Johnny Torrio, and Frank Costello in May 1929.

The son of a law firm stenographer and a stay-at-home mother, Persico was a high school dropout who was part of a local street gang. His first arrest was at 17 in the fatal beating of another youth during a melee in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. When the charges were dropped, he was recruited to the world of organized crime — working in bookmaking and loan-sharking operations. By his mid-20s, Persico was a “made man” in the family headed by Joe Colombo, and worked his way up the hierarchy.
