    I naturally gravitate toward Evergreen content because as a sponsorship coach, I’m constantly getting asked questions about how much to charge for a brand deal or how to negotiate better - so I make videos and write articles that have a long-tail searchability.

    The idea of building an ever-growing body of work that creators can tap into forever feels like a compounding exercise.

    But every time I open up social media, I see creators absolutely blowing up, gaining sometimes hundreds of thousands or even millions of followers by tapping into the cultural zeitgeist in a clever or unique way.

    I get these occasional pangs of FOMO and try to film some videos to ride the coattails of a hot topic or news article but I dunno, maybe my heart just isn’t there.

    Plus I have this fear that I’ll start spending too much time on social media “researching” so I can have my finger on the pulse of what’s trending that I’ll imperceptibly shift from a producer of content to a consumer of it. Nu-uh.

    Honestly, I just don’t know what to do, which is why I asked two experts to settle this debate, once and for all.

    Introducing Avi Gandhi, aka the "Brand Whisperer," with over 15 years of experience in the Creator Economy at companies like Patreon. Avi's deep understanding of creators and extensive partnerships experience, make him a powerhouse in the industry.     First of all, what’s the difference?

    Well, a cohort-based course (often called a CBC) is usually a fixed period of time, 4 weeks, 6 weeks, 90 days - and you go through the program with a cohort of your peers. They’re taught a few times a year, I just finished up Cohort #10 of my Brand Deal Wizard program for example.

    However with evergreen (sometimes called on-demand) courses, students can enroll at any time. Typically you can binge all the course content like a Netflix show in as much or as little time as you want.

    And over the last year, I have experimented with converting my live cohort into an evergreen program.

    And boy oh boy, do I wish I could reach back in time to Justin from 12 months ago, place my hand on his shoulder and tell him the pros and cons of cohort-based vs evergreen courses.

    I’m gonna get real with you for a second: I have some psychological trauma around this topic because I ran an influencer marketing agency for 7 years, initially it was just me but as the business started growing and I started struggling to keep my head above water with the work, I did what I thought you were supposed to do - I hired an employee.

    That went well so I hired another, then another.

    Fast forward 5 years and my payroll was almost $50,000/month. I know that seems like a lot but we were also making a lot of money, pulling down multi-six figure brand partnership contracts.

    But then, everything came crashing down in 2020 with the pandemic. I tried everything I could to save the company but it just wasn’t enough and I had to lay off all my employees.

    It was the absolute lowest point of my life emotionally and professionally. I spent several months in a really dark place.

    But then, thankfully, I emerged from those ashes and started Creator Wizard.

    And it’s really starting to grow. BUT now I have this crippling fear, that if I start hiring too many employees again, it’s all gonna come crumbling down like the agency.

    Even though I’m aware of this limiting belief, it’s super hard to not let the anxiety creep in, especially during fluctuations in revenue, month to month.

    And sometimes I wonder, do you really need to grow a team to build a successful creator business? Is it possible to stay solo and still thrive?

    I’m honestly not sure which is why I asked two experts to settle this debate, once and for all.

    See, I come from the OG YouTube world. When we started in 2009, there was literally not a way to make money.

    There was no Adsense partner program and so by default, growing an audience was what everyone focused on.

    But things have changed dramatically over the last decade. It’s no longer as stigmatized to sell stuff way earlier in your creator journey like digital products, coaching, courses, and more.

    In fact, a lot of creators wanna jump straight to making money before they have much of an audience to speak of.

    But is that a mistake? Do they need to put in the reps first and establish a years-long connection with an audience before they “deserve” to sell products?

    I’m honestly not sure which is why I asked two experts to settle this debate, once and for all.

    If you’ve ever gone down the course creation rabbit hole, even a little bit, you’ve probably heard this warning: if you create a course in a vacuum, how will you know whether your methodologies truly work? If you can’t prove it out with clients 1-1, how can you help people at scale?

    I had that fear, and so I started coaching people on their sponsorship strategy 1-1 before I launched my Brand Deal Wizard course. And I was, in fact, able to hone my frameworks and get those early wins before I went big!

    But to be fair…it could be survivorship bias! Who’s to say whether I wouldn’t have been just as successful had I NOT coached creators 1-1 first.

    There’s plenty of folks who have made hundreds of thousands of dollars launching a course and have never had a single Zoom call with a coaching client.

    So I’m honestly not sure if there is a right way and wrong way to approach this why I asked two experts to settle this debate, once and for all.
