  • In this episode, Chris Caldwell introduces Tom Grundy, CEO of Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV), who shares his insights on the future of flight and the role of hybrid aircraft technology in creating a more sustainable aviation industry. The Airlander-10, HAV's iconic aircraft, represents a new category in aviation that promises to make air travel more efficient, accessible, and environmentally friendly.

Tom discusses the potential of hybrid aircraft to connect underserved regions, create new economic opportunities, and reduce the carbon footprint of air travel. He outlines HAV's vision for redefining the skies and paving the way for a greener future in aviation.

"…when I talk emotionally about what we're doing in the UK, it's because I see the power of what we're doing to create, something new for the next generation…"

"so we can do some of the things other aircraft can't. For passengers. It's really good because it means that we can't squeeze you in three abreast with the seat there in front of you…so you're going to get more space…"

"…the kicker is that that carbon dioxide is doing more damage by being emitted in the stratosphere rather than at ground level. And the contrails that are behind the aircraft, they're a big deal. We're only just really working out how big."

"…it's a really optimistic project. This is about creating better connections for a more sustainable future, not just delivering the same connections with a bit less CO2…it's something we can do here and now…"

  • In this fascinating episode of the Conversations on Climate, host Chris Caldwell is joined by Donald Crilly, an expert in linguistics and cognitive psychology and Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship; Chair, Strategy and Entrepreneurship Faculty at London Business School.

Together, they explore how language shapes our understanding of complex issues like climate change and sustainability. Crilly explains how our brains process language and how metaphors can be used to influence our thinking and decision-making. He also discusses the role of curiosity and personal resilience in driving sustainable business behaviours.

Drawing on his research, Crilly shares insights on how corporate leaders can use language to communicate more effectively with stakeholders and drive positive change. He also offers a tip for "hacking" the way humans think about time to promote long-term decision-making. Throughout the conversation, Crilly and Caldwell delve into the intersection of language, psychology, and sustainability, shedding light on how our minds make sense of the world around us.

Added personal resilience. This is what I teach a lot of my students, that the difference between those who fundamentally fail or those who fundamentally ultimately succeed…

The idea would be to combine the sense of the proximity of the future with the sense that you're able to do something about it…

If I can at least influence how leaders think, if I can increase their curiosity, I'm fundamental really happy about that…

So tune in to this episode of Conversations on Climate to unravel the mysteries of the mind and learn more about how we can use language to drive positive change for people and the planet.

  • In this inspiring conversation, Chris Caldwell talks with Ben Tolhurst a former corporate executive who left his high-paying job to become a full-time sustainability activist. Ben shares his personal journey, the challenges he faced, and the lessons he learned along the way. They discuss the importance of corporate activism, the need for businesses to take a stand on social and environmental issues, and the role of individuals in driving change.

"Those people were business people. They were CEOs. They were owners. They were founders, they were employees. And they were holding placards and waving banners, stood outside demanding no new fossil fuels. So this concept that business and activism don't fit together isn't quite right."

"You know, this is this is a war effort that we need a marshall plan that we need, and we have to put aside political differences, ideological differences, business versus academics versus anyone else."

    Ben is very clear . . .

  • In this video, Henri Servaes, the Richard Brealey Professor of Corporate Governance; Professor of Finance from London Business School discusses his research on the intersection of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and finance.

He reveals that consumers are increasingly interested in how products are made, where they are made, and how companies treat their employees, the environment, and the community. This growing interest is leading consumers to substitute away from companies that are weaker in ESG to companies that are stronger in ESG, resulting in a significant increase in sales for companies with better ESG performance.

His research indicates that a 1% standard deviation increase in environmental and social performance can lead to an almost 9% increase in sales for a given product in a given country at a given point in time. He also discusses how this trend is being driven by changing societal attitudes towards women and the importance of having women in leadership positions. Ultimately, he argues that companies that perform better on environmental and social dimensions are able to sell more products and that this is driving a stock price differential.

However, he cautions that not all academic research supports this finding and that companies need to consider the cost of improving their ESG performance when deciding whether to invest in it. Stay tuned to find out more about the Power of ESG and how consumers are driving companies towards sustainability.

Companies that are stronger in ESG cannot charge a higher price per unit, but they get more sales, because just people buy more of their products...

I've seen consumers now showing a lot more interest in, you know, how the product is made, where the product is made, how the company, you know, treats its employees, how the company treats the environment, how the company treats the community.

The companies that perform better on environmental and social dimensions, do they actually sell more products? Do customers do consumers actually care about the environmental and social performance of the companies? And indeed, we we find that they do.

  • In this episode of Conversations on Climate, Chris Caldwell sits down with Nick Molden, the CEO of Emissions Analytics, to discuss the dark side of electric vehicles (EVs), the importance of data integrity, and the future of transportation.

Nick, a self-proclaimed data-driven environmentalist, shares his insights on the parallels between the dieselgate scandal and the current climate change debate, and the challenges of balancing human progress with environmental sustainability.

They also delve into the complexities of tire emissions, the benefits and drawbacks of synthetic fuels, and the potential of nuclear power as a solution to the CO2 problem. This thought-provoking conversation aims to answer the question Why Electric Vehicles Are NOT The Future (Yet)? and the answers will leave you questioning the assumptions you have about the future of transportation and the role of data in shaping environmental policy. Stay tuned in to learn more!

…and what's happened for 30 years is we've offshored CO2 production… it's just being produced in other countries. We have moved things progressively offshore in this perverse world where you set something up as a metric which you know is not true. You lead to perverse outcomes, and it's exactly the same as diesel. You set up a test, a measure which you knew to be wrong.

I have no doubt if if the European authorities were sufficiently dogged about it, they could force every vehicle on the road to be electric. Question is, at what price?

So if we were to scrap all the environmental things today, it would be great for today and terrible for people tomorrow…

    Highlights:

00:02 Challenges in sourcing uranium and handling its depletion and waste.

02:30 Environmental progress through technological advance

07:26 Uncertainty about legality of defeat devices in Asia

09:47 Electric vehicles are not zero emission

14:12 Europe's regulatory approach is driven by politics and industry ties

16:45 Data collection and analysis challenges in complex systems

20:52 Tires pose complex problems for all vehicles

22:47 Tires from cars contribute to global environmental pollution.

26:40 Properly pricing externalities can lead to more environmentally friendly choices

28:39 Paying a proper price generates revenue for investing in new technologies or compensating those affected.

32:33 Focus shifting towards reducing environmental impact in manufacturing phase

34:41 Nuclear power can be used to create synthetic liquid fuels.

38:20 Europe's strong push towards electric vehicles may face challenges in reality

40:22 UK manufacturing industry requests £7.7 billion in subsidies for 270,000 electric vehicle sales.

44:29 Transition to 100% electric vehicles requires massive investment and is currently unpalatable. 46:27 Shifting from private cars to public transport may require a greater increase in public transport provision.

50:25 Impact of electrification on European Auto industry competitiveness

52:20 China's advantage in EV supply chains to Europeans

56:18 Offshored CO2 production leading to misleading CO2 reduction claims.

  • In this episode of Conversations on Climate, host Chris Caldwell of United Renewables sits down with Glada Lahn, Senior Research Fellow at Chatham House, to discuss the intersection of climate change, water scarcity, and migration in the Middle East.

Glada shares her personal journey of focusing her career on the Middle East, initially drawn to the region's politics and Islamic art and architecture. She discusses her work on oil companies in the Middle East and how it sparked her interest in the issue of climate change and its impact on the oil and gas sector.

The conversation delves into the importance of water as a shared resource and the potential for conflict and collaboration between countries in managing it. Glada also highlights the challenges of addressing water scarcity in the context of the Middle East, where many countries are highly dependent on food imports and are experiencing rapid urbanization.

The conversation touches on the links between geopolitics and the environment and the impact of climate change on migration patterns. Glada emphasises the importance of considering the interconnectedness of these issues when addressing the challenges facing the Middle East.

This episode provides a unique perspective on the complex issues of water scarcity, migration, and climate change in the Middle East, drawing on Glada's extensive experience and expertise in the region.

"...there's no easy answer to this to improve things in a genuine way for the long term...not just papering over the cracks, because that won't work."

"Water... is a shared resource that is extremely valuable. It's essentially more valuable than oil. But it can also spill across borders. If countries blame the country next door for the water shortage...and you've seen that between Iran and Afghanistan lately. And yet these rivers or these or shared aquifers, they represent really important opportunity for collaboration."

  • In this episode, host Chris Caldwell sits down with Alison Taylor, Clinical Associate Professor at NYU Stern School of Business and Executive Director of Ethical Systems. They discuss the crucial role businesses must play in tackling climate change and other environmental, social, and governance (ESG) challenges.

    Key topics covered:

💎 The importance of reconnecting ESG to ethical decision-making within companies

💎 How businesses can attract and retain younger employees who prioritize ESG issues

💎 The growing significance of reputation risk and the need for more compassionate relationships with stakeholders

💎 Practical steps businesses can take to embed sustainability and ethical practices into their operations.

"There is a camp on the right that says all this ESG stuff is just woke; it's just sell socialism; we need to go back to Milton Friedman. we need to go back to basics; we need to forget about all this stuff and start thinking about shareholder value. But really, good luck hiring or retaining anyone under 30 if you're going to make those kind of arguments."

"If we have a more interactive, and compassionate relationship with younger generations, I think we'll make better decisions about how we run our corporations. Our metaphor for the corporation has been that it's like a self-interested, profit maximizing black box. People often say if a corporation was a person, they'd be a psychopath. An organization isn't a person. It's a social system."

Alison Taylor provides valuable insights on the future of business and sustainability, underscoring the urgent need for companies to take a more proactive and responsible approach to addressing the climate crisis and related ESG concerns.

  • In this episode, we sit down with economist and author Professor Sir Dieter Helm to discuss his vision for a sustainable economy.

Helm asks the question, "what would it look like to live in a sustainable economy?" and offers a framework for understanding and addressing climate change.

He argues that the current narrative around net-zero is unrealistic and that a more balanced approach is needed, one that takes into account the realities of the global economy and the need for sustainable economic growth.

Helm emphasises the importance of focusing on capital assets, rather than just flows, and of considering the intergenerational impacts of our actions. He also discusses the need for a new kind of economic thinking that takes into account the realities of the 21st century, rather than relying on outdated models from the 20th century.

Tune in for a thought-provoking conversation on the challenges and opportunities of achieving a sustainable future. This episode is brought to you by United Renewables in association with the University of Oxford.

This captivating keynote from the Green Vision Summit & Expo in Malta explores the urgent need for a paradigm shift in how we approach environmental challenges and build a better future.

Unpacking the limitations of outdated concepts like the triple bottom line, Buckley introduces the 3 fundamental principles of sustainability: economics, innovation, and futures thinking. He emphasises the crucial role of ecological literacy in developing regenerative solutions and fostering intergenerational justice.

  • In this video, economist and professor Alex Edmans discusses his latest book, "May Contain Lies: How Stories, Statistics and Studies Exploit Our Biases."

Drawing on examples from economics, finance, and politics, Edmans reveals how confirmation bias, cherry-picking, and the misuse of data can result in misinformation and poor decision-making. He also offers practical advice for becoming better at sniffing out the truth and avoiding the pitfalls of disinformation.

This conversation is a must-watch for anyone who wants to be an informed citizen in today's data-driven world. Edmans provides insights into the importance of critical thinking and statistical literacy and shares tips for how to evaluate the credibility of information and make evidence-based decisions.

Whether you're a student, a professional, or simply someone who wants to stay informed, this video is a valuable resource for learning how to navigate the complex world of information and disinformation.

…Readers are much more likely to remember a story than a statistic. So then how do I avoid the danger of hand-picking one story…so I wanted to write a book about misinformation, about how we need to make sure that we tame our biases and respond to evidence based on its scientific accuracy, and not whether we like these findings.

…this highlights the importance of not being swayed by one particular study, even if it's published in the top scientific journals, because even editors and peer reviewers can make mistakes.

…the solutions to misinformation are all within ourselves.
