  • Dr. Cynthia Shelby-Lane saved many lives as an ER doctor in a level one trauma center in Detroit over twenty years. She has since pivoted and pivoted and pivoted. She is constantly reinventing herself. She is currently practicing anti-aging medicine and is board certified in anti-aging, functional and integrative medicine. (Yes, please.) She is also a stand up comedian and has been performing in Detroit and around the US for the past 15 years. She combines the two by educating audiences on the health benefits of laughter and humour and is certified in Laughter Wellness and Positive Psychology.

She recently gave a lecture at Gilda’s Laughfest called “Laughter for the Health of It: The Serious side of Funny”. That’s Comedicine gold! Shelby also loves space! She hopes to get to the International Space Center one day and we are rooting for her! Check out this truly fascinating lifelong learner in this episode that left Sarah speechless, not once, not twice, but THRICE!

  • A comedian walks into a medical school for a rectal exam….This is not a set up for a joke, this is Devon Flynn’s day job. Our guest on this episode is a stand up comedian, playwright, author, DJ, bike mechanic and a standardized medical patient and male clinical teaching associate at a medical school. In his day job, he helps medical students practice their communication skills and clinical acuity, acting as a standardized patient. Things get a little more intense when his job takes a turn as a male clinical teaching associate and students learn how to do digital rectal examinations on him. Yes, that’s what I said. Devon is a consummate professional by day, guiding medical students through this delicate examination and offering real time feedback and tips and tricks. (For example, trim those fingernails folks!) By night, he takes all of his experiences, including this one, and finds the funny. Devon is a strong advocate for mens’ health and for getting all of your parts checked out regularly. He is happy to report that his prostate is doing great. This episode is about vulnerability, professionalism, and lube. Enjoy!

  • In this episode, we get to know Kate Nichols, who is our first social worker on Comedicine and we are so happy to have her! Kate is a licensed clinical social worker and stand up comedian. She has performed internationally, including 4 years at the Edinburgh International Fringe Festival and for the US Army as part of the USO, opening for Chris Gethard, in addition to her regular local appearances in the NY and NJ comedy scene. In addition to her stand-up, she's half of comedy duo “Belleville Broads”, perform as animal-print loving, exaggerated versions of everyone’s favorite over-the-top Aunts from New Jersey! Aunt Angela even joins up for a quick hello on this episode! Kate loves blending the worlds of comedy and mental health, as two sources for the human pursuit of making meaning out of our experiences to find greater connection to each other. She has an insightful and positive perspective on her profession, comedy, mental health and life in general. I promise you will feel great after listening to this episode.

  • Dr Greg Bishop is a veterinarian and cartoonist. He graduated from UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine at the peak of the median curve in 2013, but Greg is anything but average. Greg endured a small animal rotating internship in the New York area, complete with old-school verbally abusive surgeon, and soul-crushing hours and workload. This horrific experience made Greg decide to be a person after his internship. He is a husband, dad and dog dad in Portland, Oregon. Greg now works as a relief veterinarian in primary care and emergency practice. He is also a teacher at a technical college and a creative. Greg has illustrated eight children's books (working on the ninth) and is currently writing a graphic novel about veterinary medicine. He has a monthly cartoon featured in Veterinary Practice News, and recently started submitting cartoons to the New Yorker. We talk about veterinary medicine, jokes, cartoons, rejection, mentorship and whether it is better to be a crayon or a pencil.

Sasquatchpaw.com - Greg Bishop's personal blog with cartoons, articles, and links to other creative projects. This is the article we discussed at the beginning of the podcast.

  • On today’s episode we talk to our first paramedic! Brad Pittman has been a paramedic and stand up comedian for 34 years. He works the nightshift as a paramedic outside of Atlanta. Guys, Brad has seen some sh*t. Maybe you think your job is stressful, but do you wear a bullet proof vest to work? Do you? Well Brad does. Brad also had a stroke 8 years ago while at work. This is terrible, but if you are going to have a stroke, having one in an ambulance with another paramedic is a close second to having one in the hospital. Brad’s stroke left him with an intermittent stutter which he has had to work through on stage. Brad is also a Youtuber with some super fun characters that he has cooked up, and a podcaster. His podcast is called Smoked Meat, named after his love of meat! And his meat-related hobbies that helped him get through some tough times. Getting to know Brad was super fun! I’m glad he is out there! Thanks Brad.

  • Dr Matt Asciutto is a veterinarian, podcaster, musician, improvisor, educator, Dad and visionary that we had the pleasure of talking to on this episode. He has maintained a fine balance of science, medicine, music and comedy throughout his life and he has carved his own path. Matt didn’t get the memo that veterinary medicine is hard to get into and hard in general, and he has a refreshing attitude towards the profesh. Prior to veterinary school, Matt was a professional improv performer for seven years and he completed a Masters in Chemistry. Who exactly is this guy? Take a listen to find out. Matt Asciutto has made the annoying decision to live a life that defies the traditional. • On this episode of Comedicine, we are hopping across the pond to speak with Liz Easter. Liz is a seasoned veterinarian and relatively new stand-up comedian. She has been a primary care veterinarian in the UK for 19 years, and she recently has made a shift into mobile veterinary palliative and end-of-life care. Liz keeps her comedy life and her veterinary life separate, which is just a personal choice and totally not because she is a spy. She tells us about her first comedy set when she lost her voice right before the showcase. Most people would have bailed, but she wrote a whole new set and performed it using text-to-voice like a champ. Liz tells us about the London stand-up scene and what it’s like to perform in a gong show that uses dildoes as gongs. Yes, that’s what I said.

Liz Easter is a Veterinarian working in mobile end-of-life care in London, England, having spent 19 years in general practice. She has been performing stand-up comedy since 2022, and is an observational and storytelling comic. She performed at the 2022 Brighton Fringe, and more recently, completely died on her ass at the Big Belly Ding Dong Gong show in London. At home, Liz has two children, a cat and a long-suffering husband, who feature in much of her stand-up material.

  • Our guest on this episode is the inimitable, incomparable, incredible Dr. Janet McMordie. She is a fellowship-trained sports medicine physician who also does surgical assist and mass gathering medicine. During the pandemic, she made a hard pivot to improv comedy. For her second act, she is an improv performer, actor in film and TV, voiceover artist, stunt performer and podcaster. She is also a medical consultant for film and TV where she tries really hard to make art medically accurate, but that’s hard because sometimes medically accurate doesn’t look good on TV. She is going to tell us about how she does all of this. It’s an amazing and fun and cool chat!!

  • We are joined by Sarah’s old friend and kindred spirit, Dr Andy Roark. Dr. Andy Roark is a practicing veterinarian, international speaker, author, and media personality. He has found that improv comedy is his superpower, and it infuses all areas of his life with hilarity and compassion for others. He is not big on plans, which seems to be working for him. Andy gives great advice at all times. If you listen to this episode, he will drop some gems that you can strategize your entire life around. I promise. Andy also has a wonderful podcast called Cone of Shame if you want to hear more about the wonderful, sometimes funny, sometimes challenging world of veterinary medicine. • In this episode, Sarah talks to Kelli Dunham, who is a nurse, comedian, author, LGBTQ+ leader, educator, performer, author, caregiver, and storyteller, and maybe I’m missing something because she is so many things! However, despite outward appearances, she is not a gym teacher or a 12-year-old boy. Kelli was also an aspiring nun at one point, but her “insufficient docility” made this career choice a bad fit. I guess they call it a convent for a reason. (It’s conventional.) She started telling jokes to her dairy cows as a kid in Wisconsin and found that they were sometimes better audience members than the comedy bros she encountered at open mics when she first started doing comedy. Kelli found other places to explore stand-up and storytelling, like conferences for health care professionals, Pride events, workplaces, The Moth, and the Edinburgh Fringe. Through being a natural caregiver and her own life experiences, Kelli takes her comedy where no one else dares to go. Her most recent one-person show is Second Helping: Two Dead Girlfriends, Dead Funny. And yes, it is about her two partners who died, but it’s really about how to ask for help. Kelli believes that “laughing is a revolutionary gesture” which is the coolest quote ever. How do you solve a problem like Kelli Dunham? How do you hold a moonbeam in your hand?

  • Season one of Comedicine has wrapped and it was so much fun!! If you have been listening to Comedicine, you will know that the last question we ask every distinguished guest on the show is to personally invite Dr Ken Jeong to be a guest on Comedicine. Ken Jeong is the ultimate Comedicine guest! Have we heard from Ken? No, not yet, but I’m sure it is just a matter of time until Ken finds out about this podcast and his people call my people. (Note, I have no people.) For this pseudo-episode, we made a little montage of the Kenvitations from season one.

Thank you to all of the wonderful guests from season one who were my friends before or are my friends now. It’s so wonderful to meet people in the medical comedy space! Join us for season two in the new year!

  • Our guest this week needs no introduction because it’s me. It’s Sarah. I’m the guest. In our last episode of season one, Dr Vien Phommachanh (The Comic Doc) our friend and guest from episode 2, returns to host with Dr Sarah Boston as his guest. Why did we do this? Well mostly because last time Sarah and Vien talked, Vien had a lot of questions that Sarah refused to answer (because rules) and Vien said he’d love to come back as host. So that’s what we did. Also, you can get to know Sarah a bit better this way. Who is this person?

Dr Sarah Boston is a veterinary surgical oncologist and thyroid cancer survivor. (Ironic, right?) Her bestselling memoir, Lucky Dog: How Being a Veterinarian Saved my Life, was published by The House of Anansi in 2014. Lucky Dog will make you laugh and ugly cry, sometimes at the same time, most of the time out loud. Sarah’s book got her on a path of comedy writing and then she decided to go to comedy school because she is a nerd. Sarah graduated from Humber College in the Comedy Performance and Writing Program in spring 2023. She is a regular at YukYuks in Toronto on Rising Stars, and has performed at the Hillside Folk Festival and Guelph Comedy Festival. She still works as a veterinary surgical oncologist and she is trying to find ways to make veterinarians to laugh more. (We need it!)

    Time stamps:
00:04 Sarah introduces someone who needs no introduction (herself)
00:13 The Snot Doctor is back as guest host and Sarah is the host guest
01:14 Electric toothbrushes where no electric toothbrush should be
03:36 The gator, the dog and the cowboy. A very Florida tale
06:01 Thank you Hills Pet Nutrition!
06:51 We should start now probably….
07:44 If you really cared about animals you would do this for free
13:14 How does a veterinary surgical oncologist end up doing stand up?
19:16 Sarah proposes brunch stand up
23:36 Are you really pushing a frontier if everyone is pushing the same frontier
24:49 Middle aged lady comedy is Sarah’s lane
25:31 Keeping it profesh with healthcare and comedy
    28:34 Comedy and Cancer
30:21 Cancer platitudes and mysogeny are two things Sarah finds hilarious
34:48 You can be a clown or you can be a surgeon, but you can’t be a clown surgeon
39:31 Invitation to Dr. Ken Jeong
45:20 Dramatic attempted takeover of podcast by Vien ends peacefully
