  • 🧠 In this episode of CISO Insiders, we welcome Roee Besser, the information security and cyber risk manager at CYYDER.

Roee Besser discusses in detail key insights about the cybersecurity industry while giving useful advice and setting expectations for newcomers and individuals who want to pursue a career in the cybersecurity industry.

👇🏼 This special episode will tackle the following topics:

⭐ Giving career advice to newcomers and individuals who want to pursue a career in the cybersecurity industry.

⭐ Key resources that have helped Roee through his career in information security.

⭐ The power dynamics between the vCISO role and other C-level roles in small and large enterprises.

    Highlights:

🔎 “Looking for good mentors that will guide and escort me has helped me through my career. I’m not good at sales — this is something that I have to admit. But still, I found the right success partners that would push me to the right customers. This pushes me towards interesting positions.”

    Highlight one:

👉🏻 ”The most important skill sets for being a CISO are being business savvy and having an understanding of how the business operates. You also need to grasp the value of your solution if you want to grow in the position of a CISO.

Technical skills are foundational; you must understand the ins and outs of software and security frameworks, but most importantly, you must also be able to apply all of your technical knowledge to the business”

    Highlight two:

👉🏻 ”One of the most interesting methods to learn about cybersecurity development could be through cybersecurity vendors”

    Why?

“Because those vendors are financially incentivized to know what is going on in the cybersecurity domain and address it in real-time. The knowledge that they have can be very educational.”

What is one thing you wish you knew before beginning your career?

You want to be completely prepared for any job you take on. Someone believes in you enough to challenge you for something you may believe you are not prepared for; I would say go for it and be honest and transparent about your ability and experience in that domain.

What advice would you give to someone interested in becoming a CISO?

Go deep or wide, but at least one of these. You can discover that cybersecurity has numerous dimensions. You can take classes, webinars, and certifications, which are all excellent ways to broaden your perspective and add value to your career. There are some things that you must continue to learn as time passes. Because cybersecurity changes so quickly, you must stay current and engage in some self-directed learning.
