In this episode, I sat down with John Rapley, who co-wrote “Why Empires Fall.” The conversation kicks off with a bit about how John and his co-author, Peter Heather, came up with the idea for the book. They realized that even though they came from different academic backgrounds, they had similar ideas about how empires rise and collapse—whether we’re talking about ancient Rome or today’s Western world led by the US.
John explains that empires get rich and powerful by exploiting their “peripheries” (i.e., colonies or less developed countries). But over time, those peripheries grow stronger and can eventually challenge the empire’s dominance. In Rome’s day, this happened with actual invasions, but now it’s more about economic competition and shifting global power.
They talk about how the Western world isn’t necessarily doomed to collapse like Rome did, mainly because of technology and ongoing economic growth. However, if Western countries make poor policy choices—like trying to recreate past “greatness” without adapting to new realities—they could end up in serious decline, both relative to other countries and in real terms.

GameStop are buying Bitcoin. I can't quite believe it. It's been a long time since I first saw some Apes meme that GameStop should buy bitcoin. I don't think they ever really expected it to happen. And yet here we are... Waiting for the announcement that GameStop bought Bitcoin from Ryan Cohen - hopefully at the Bitcoin Conference in Las Vegas.
So who better to invite onto the podcast to dicuss GME going long on BTC than John Waldron, Irish Bitcoin Guy, who was part of a group of people trying to get the company to seriously look at this proposal. If you want to know how we got here - then this is the place to start.

In this episode of Chatter I sat down with Peter Heather, a distinguished professor of Medieval History at King’s College London and the co-author of “Why Empires Fall.” We discussed the intricacies of the Roman Empire's rise and fall, focusing on themes of corruption, economic and social decline, and external pressures from emerging peripheral powers.
Peter Heather debunks the traditional narrative of Rome's moral decadence and instead highlights the strategic challenges and evolving economic landscape that contributed to the Empire's gradual collapse. The discussion shifts to modern parallels, drawing connections between Rome's historical challenges and contemporary issues faced by the Western world, including economic shifts, aging populations, and fiscal policy concerns.
The episode also covers fascinating insights into archaeological methods used to understand Rome's economy, critiques of Edward Gibbon’s historical interpretations, and the role of local and global economic changes in shaping empires past and present. With thoughtful analysis and expert commentary, this episode offers a comprehensive look at the enduring relevance of Rome’s history and its lessons for today’s global powers.

In this video, I spoke to people at the farmers protest in London, where thousands of farmers are taking a stand against the proposed inheritance tax reforms announced in the Autumn Budget 2024 by Chancellor Rachel Reeves. Starting in April 2026, farms valued at over £1 million will face a 20% inheritance tax, a significant change from previous policies that exempted most family farms.
📢 Why Are Farmers Protesting?
On November 19, 2024, over 20,000 farmers gathered at Parliament Square in London, organized by the National Farmers' Union (NFU) and other agricultural bodies. Farmers fear these tax changes will force them to sell parts of their land, jeopardizing their livelihoods and the future of family-run farms.
🎙 Key Voices from the Protest
Notable voices like Jeremy Clarkson have described these tax reforms as a "hammer blow" to British agriculture. But beyond celebrity soundbites, real farmers argue that while their land may hold paper value, their incomes are modest, making it difficult to shoulder these new tax burdens.
🌍 The Bigger Picture
The farming community is already grappling with post-Brexit trade uncertainty, rising operational costs, and climate change challenges. The added inheritance tax could push more farms into corporate ownership or tax shelters, leading to less land used for productive farming and a greater reliance on imported food.

Michael Anton Fischer has always harbored a deep interest in economics, despite initially pursuing a degree in engineering. Using his engineering knowledge as a foundation, he delved into the study of economics only to find certain discrepancies in conventional teachings. This discovery led him to explore alternative perspectives, notably the Austrian School of economic thought. During his intellectual journey, Fischer also encountered the works of Alfred Landsberg, a Jewish English banker who immigrated to Germany in the late 19th century. Landsberg, an early critic of mainstream economic theories, famously predicted the hyperinflation of 1923 as early as 1919. Inspired by these insights, Fischer developed a nuanced understanding of economic systems, blending traditional engineering principles with alternative economic theories to navigate and understand the complexities of the financial world.🌟 🎙️ Key Takeaways from "Bitcoin Nation" 🎙️ 🌟🔹 History Repeating: Michael Anton Fischer revitalizes the legacy of Alfred Landsberg, a pioneer in predicting hyperinflation, drawing clear parallels between post-World War I Germany and current economic conditions. His republished letters offer a concise understanding of monetary policies' impacts.🔹 Fiat vs. Future Currency: Michael foresees a competition between Bitcoin and gold standards as potential successors to the current fiat system. This intriguing perspective challenges conventional banking and monetary theories.🔹 Decentralised Society & Digital Citizenship: As nations face demographic challenges and the evolving global economy, Fischer suggests a future where states act more like service providers. With increasing digital nomadism, technologies like Bitcoin could fundamentally reshape how we perceive citizenship and economic participation. https://x.com/MichaelAntonF Bitcoin Nation: How Sound Money Can Fix Democracy - https://amzn.to/4i9q3RQ 00:00 History repeats; media and politics unchanged.09:39 Technological limits shaped economic systems over millennia.14:24 Unprecedented fiat economy challenges predictability of outcomes.20:18 Money is a tool for postponing transactions.23:59 US tech, economy evolved significantly post-1850.29:49 Comparing wages requires same goods context.37:08 Valuation subjective; norm tokens reflect economy transactions.38:51 Misunderstanding mathematical equations affects economic theories.48:11 Bitcoin proposed as solution for flawed monetary systems.52:09 Significant migration won't solve skilled worker shortage.58:03 States' territorial monopoly crumbles, competition emerges.59:32 Free market leads to progress and cooperation.-----------------------------------------------------PRE-ORDER MY GAMESTOP BOOK - https://wen-moon.com Cast-Magic: The World's Most Powerful Content Tool (30% off with code Casting30) - https://get.castmagic.io/4ktvtch68y67 Make Professional Looking Clips In Seconds With Opus - https://www.opus.pro/?via=ee2b04 Buy Brexit: The Establishment Civil War - https://amzn.to/39XXVjq -----------------------------------------------------You can listen to the show on Spotify, Apple, and all major platforms - https://chatterpodcast.podbean.com/ Watch Us On Odysee.com - https://odysee.com/$/invite/@TheJist:4 Join My Mailing List - https://stats.sender.net/forms/egBZYd/view Follow Me On Twitter - https://twitter.com/Give_Me_TheJist -----------------------------------------------------Website - https://thejist.co.uk/ Music from Just Jim – https://soundcloud.com/justjim

In our latest episode of Chatter, we had a thought-provoking discussion with Liz Webster, founder of Save British Farming, about the evolving disparities in our clothing and food systems. Here are three key takeaways:
🔹 Two-Tiered Society Echoes Historical Feudalism: Liz delves into the alarming trend where industrialization reserves quality products for the wealthy, while the majority subsist on mass-produced goods, likening it to a regressive economic pattern reminiscent of feudal societies.
🔹 Impact of Inheritance Tax on Farmers: The proposed changes to UK inheritance tax rules could exacerbate financial challenges for farmers. While aiming to provide relief, the nuances of these changes might push more farmers to sell their land, further detaching agricultural land from productive use.
🔹 Grassroots Movements and Political Advocacy: Liz emphasizes the importance of grassroots movements to support farmers and the need for advocates to pressure MPs into considering balanced agricultural policies. Citing the film "V for Vendetta," she calls for collective action to combat inequitable policies.
For those passionate about sustainable farming and food security, Liz's insights are a critical call to action. Join the conversation and help shape a fairer food future! 🌱
