Carol cracks the door open to talk about The National Orphans Home, which first opened in 1850. It was the largest Institution of its kind in the U. S. and provided a very special home for thousands of children until its closing in 1944. It is said that it set the bar for being one of the best. Carol tells the story of her mother, only 4 at the time, and her siblings growing up in that orphanage after her grandfather died at the age of 32. He worked in a zinc mine in Tennessee and contracted black lung disease, leaving his wife a widow with 5 children. Max cracks the door open to continue his story. Desperate to leave home to escape the constant abuse by his stepfather, he enlisted in the Marines at the age of 17. He began having nightmares reliving the horror he had escaped. He turned to the staff psychologist for help. After his service in the Marines, he suffered another bad life experience when he was sentenced to a ten-year prison sentence.

Max cracks the door open to share about his real father abandoning his mother and his five small children. Desperate to put food on the table, his mother worked a night job as a desk clerk. His father's relatives turned her over to the authorities, accusing her of abandonment and neglect. She was sentenced to prison. It was a sad day when all five children were separated and put into foster care. Foster care was like living a bad dream for Max, but it did not even begin to compare to the life after his mother's release, when she remarried. For Max, his sisters, and his mother, their life became a nightmare of years of abuse by Heban, their stepfather and their mother's new husband.
