In celebration of Rob's birthday, Ray and Rob are biting off more than they can chew again by watching three movies! They're also hoping to find redemption in a film that its own filmmaker has disowned by watching David Lynch's (BLUE VELVET, LOST HIGHWAY) divisive take on Frank Herbert's DUNE as well as the new, more critically heralded DUNE PART I and DUNE PART II, directed by Denis Villeneuve (BLADE RUNNER 2049, PRISONERS)!
Dune '84 was a box office disaster and relegated David Lynch to arthouse filmmaking for the rest of his career, but many argue there are many redeeming factors to his vision that have risen it to the status of cult classic! While Denis was able to take his time and span the story across two films, Lynch was forced to stuff a massive sci-fi epic into a single 2-hour adventure. Ray and Rob are massive fans of the new versions and have decent memories of the original, but will this back-to-back rewatch find them appreciating Lynch's vision more? Or will they find themselves agreeing with Lynch himself that DUNE '84 is better left to the trash bin of history? Tune in to find out!

It's time for Rob's episode of SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM and he is in a bit of a drought, two months in a row where Ray has not liked the movies Rob has recommended. To top it all off, it's Rob's birthday month, a month where he usually prides himself on pushing Ray to the limits of his film tastes. However, due to his current situation, he has decided to switch things up and instead of pushing Ray, he's bringing him something he is guaranteed to love!
Rob is doing this by bringing Ray an absolute classic. A film that embodies why films are made at all, Gene Kelly's 1952 musical comedy, SINGIN' IN THE RAIN! The story of silent film actors who are being forced to transition as talkies begin to take hold, SINGIN' IN THE RAIN is pinnacle of the Hollywood musical and an iconic ideal of what classics strive to be. With stellar supporting performances by Debbie Reynolds (THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN, MOTHER) and Donald O'Connor (THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS, FRANCIS GOES TO WEST POINT), SINGIN' IN THE RAIN captures the heart and hopefully, will capture Ray's. But will it? You'll have to tune in to find out!

We've once again found ourselves with a five Monday month here at Car RayRob, which means it's time for a brand-new special Kid's Edition of SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM! For this episode, Ray and Rob are going back to not only a pivotal moment in film history, but a pivotal moment in Rob's own film history, to the very first movie he ever saw in a movie theater! This distinct honor belongs to Tim Burton's 1989 comic book spectacle BATMAN, starring Michael Keaton (MR. NANNY, BEETLEJUICE) and Jack Nicholson (FIVE EASY PIECES, THE SHINING)!
For those lucky enough to have lived through it, BATMAN owned the Summer of 1989. It was everywhere. While Jaws may have invented the summer blockbuster, Tim Burton's BATMAN paved the way for what know today as the modern MCU and DCEU that changed the way movies are seen (not always for the best). Seeing as Mr. KittyKaiju is firmly a Marvel kid, Ray and Rob thought it was high time to take him back to the origins of this era to see how it stacks up with his modern viewpoint.
Will BATMAN have the same impact on him as it did Rob all those years ago? Or will the modern conventions of the comic book movie leave BATMAN feeling like a quaint antique from the past? Tune in to find out!

After kicking off Summer with the lighthearted beach comedy BACK TO THE BEACH, Ray and Rob have decided to follow it up with a something a little more on the dramatic side. Both Ray and Rob found themselves drawn to more serious movies as kids and today, they've decided to explore those connections by re-visiting the 1990 prison drama CADENCE, starring Charlie Sheen (MEN AT WORK, RED DAWN), Martin Sheen (BADLANDS, GRACE AND FRANKIE) and Laurence Fishburne (THE MATRIX, BOYZ IN THE HOOD). CADENCE centers on Pfc. Franklin Bean, who after his father passes, goes on a drunken tirade and finds himself slapped with a 90-day stint in the stockade. During this time he finds himself under the thumb of MSgt. Otis McKinney, a hardnosed abuser whose life is beginning to fall apart himself. This confluence of events pits these two men against one another and as Bean must also contend with the inner workings of the rest of prisoners and the relationships he must forge to survive.
This is one that both Ray and Rob had strong feelings for in their younger years, but time isn't always kind to movies, and they have to discover if it still rings true in their adult years.

It's Ray's turn again on SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM! He's on a hot streak with 2 films in a row that Rob has loved, and he thinks he's got another one on his hands. This month, he's recommending Stanley Kramer's 1960 courtroom drama INHERIT THE WIND, starring Spencer Tracy (GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER, BOYS TOWN), Fredric March (DR. JEKYLL AND MR HYDE, I MARRIED A WITCH) and Gene Kelly (SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, AN AMERICAN IN PARIS)! A fictionalized retelling of the real-life Scopes Monkey Trial, INHERIT THE WIND centers on a small-town teacher who is arrested when he teaches Darwin's theory of evolution in a classroom breaking Tennessee law. When the case catches national attention, two former friends find themselves litigating on either side of the case and must grapple with the world changing around them and the people they've become in the process.
Will this taut legal battle convince Rob to join the cause? Or will the subject matter trigger him to point of disdain? Tune in this week to find out!

For this month's brand-new episode of A COPY OF A COPY Ray and Rob are doing something they've never done before on this podcast, they're actually going to the theater to watch a movie! Join them as they re-visit the 1987 sci-fi action film MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE as well as the new 2026 remake of the same name, in theaters now! The divisive original stars Dolph Lundgren (in just his second feature film after the classic ROCKY IV), as the legendary He-Man on a quest to retrieve a cosmic key to have the ability to return to Eternia and overthrow his greatest nemesis Skeletor, played by Frank Langella in a performance that many hold as the shining point of this film to this day.
The new version revolves around Prince Adam, who has been banished to Earth but has lost his sword of power and thus unable to return to Eternia where Skeletor has gained control of his homeland. His childhood friend Teela finds him years later and brings him home to spark a revolution and return Eternia to its former glory.
The original is a touchy subject for Ray and Rob because they hold vastly different opinions on its quality. So, gear up for a fun conversation as they re-visit this sore subject as well as the brand-new attempt at restarting this long-cursed franchise and see if Ray can find a new appreciation for the original, and if the new take can hold up!

Rob finally hit the wall last month and recommended a movie that Ray didn't like, but he hopes to right the ship this month. In the name of Pride Month, Rob is recommending Gus Van Sant's 1991 cult classic, MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO, starring the late River Phoenix (STAND BY ME, SNEAKERS) and Keanu Reeves (JOHN WICK, POINT BREAK). This mainstay of the New Queer Cinema wave of the late 80s/early 90s centers on Mike and Scott, two street hustlers in Portland whose relationship takes a turn when Mike becomes enthralled with the idea of finding his long-lost birth mother. A film about the journey of life and how your past can trap your future, MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO is a timeless tale who inspired a generation of queer youth looking for belonging in an unaccepting world.
Will human story of longing and belonging be enough to win Ray's heart? Or will the wandering narrative live him scratching his head? Tune in this week to find out!

Summer is upon us! To kick things off on HELLO MOVIES, MY OLD FRIEND, Ray and Rob have decided to re-visit a childhood classic to get them in the seasonal mood, the 1987 comedy classic, BACK TO THE BEACH! This slice of nostalgia stars Frankie Avalon (BEACH BLANKET BINGO, GREASE) and Annette Funicello (BEACH BLANKET BINGO, PAJAMA PARTY) as fictional versions of their classic characters made popular by the beach party films of the 60s as they've grown up, gotten married, had kids, and have found less than glamourous life in midwestern America. When they make a return to the beach to find their daughter in a secret romance and the flood of old memories of the life long past them threatens to topple the life they've made, both Frankie and Annette have to come to grips with the people they've become and the value of all they've created along the way.
With a cavalcade of cameos ranging from Gilligan to Pee Wee Herman, this movie was a staple of both Rob and Ray's childhood but fell along the wayside somewhere along the road. Will it still live up to memories in their heads? Or will this nostalgia bomb prove to feel hollow and relic best left in the past? Tune in this week to find out!

Ray is going back to the well of one of his favorite genres for his May selection on SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM by recommending William Wyler's 1958 Western classic THE BIG COUNTRY! This film stars Gregory Peck (TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, ROMAN HOLIDAY) as James McKay, a sailor magnate from the East who travels out West to marry Patricia (Played by Carroll Baker), an heiress to a cattle ranch whose father is deeply entrenched in a land war with a rival family lead by patriarch Rufus Hannassey, portrayed brilliantly by Burl Ives (who also won an Academy award for his performance). But when James refuses to take part in the feud, Patricia's view of him begins to change forcing James to reconsider his position and what he truly wants in life.
With a stellar supporting cast including Charlton Heston (PLANET OF THE APES, SOYLENT GREEN) and Jean Simmons (THE HAPPY ENDING, BLACK NARCISSUS), THE BIG COUNTRY marked a sea change in the American Western as the mythical culture surrounding the tropes of the genre began to give way to the rise of the New Hollywood western of the late 60s/70s.
Will the statements THE BIG COUNTRY makes on masculinity and pride prove enough to sway Rob over to its side? Or will it leave him wanting more? Tune in this week to find out!

It's time for a brand-new episode of A COPY OF A COPY, so Ray and Rob have decided to shake things up a bit by having their first ever guest (on this show)! Their favorite co-host Mr. KittyKaiju is joining them for a conversation about one of his favorite movies ever, Guillermo Del Toro's 2013 monster epic, PACIFIC RIM, as well as the direct-to-video "remake", ATLANTIC RIM!
Rob is very familiar with this trend of direct-to-video rip-offs from his tenure on the hallowed ground of Blockbuster Video. A constant confusion for customers, he never took the time to watch any of them. Does ATLANTIC RIM have any redeeming qualities? Or is it really just a blatant cash grab? Rob is kicking off the month of May with his brand-new episode of SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM! He's continuing his recent trend of pushing Ray out of his comfort zone and taking his biggest swing yet, by recommending Ken Russell's controversial historical drama, THE DEVILS! This cult classic stars Oliver Reed (THE BROOD, OLIVER!) as Urbain Grandier, a Catholic priest who finds himself accused of witchcraft by a sexually repressed nun, Sister Jeanne (played by the amazing Vanessa Redgrave). THE DEVILS places itself at the intersection of biting commentary of both the church and the monarchy, as Grandier also finds himself the target of both the French monarchy and the Catholic Church itself as they seek to take control of the city of Loudon where Grandier has created a self-contained community based on the mutual respect for all religions.
Originally rated-X upon release and banned in many countries, THE DEVILS will be Ray's toughest challenge this season! Will the outrageous subject matter turn Ray off? Or will the powerhouse performances by Oliver Reed and Vanessa Redgrave once again be the saving grace that gets him to love this movie? Tune in this week to find out!

We're wrapping up the month of April on Car RayRob with a brand-new episode of HELLO MOVIES, MY OLD FRIEND! For this episode, Ray and Rob have decided to revisit the 1993 crime drama, A PERFECT WORLD, starring Kevin Costner (BULL DURHAM, DANCES WITH WOLVES), Laura Dern (BLUE VELVET, CERTAIN WOMEN) and Clint Eastwood (THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY, DIRTY HARRY)! Clint also directed this story of an escaped convict who takes a young boy hostage for a road trip that sees an unlikely friendship spring from the inherent danger. A movie about dealing with childhood trauma in the moment and from the past, A PERFECT WORLD uses the backdrop of 1960's Texas to analyze the changing times and how the world isn't always black and white. Many an adult theme permeates this film, leaving Ray and Rob to wonder "what about this movie would draw a kid to enjoy it"? So, tune in to find out the answer to that question and the biggest question of all, does this movie still hold up?

For his April episode of SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM, Ray has decided to bring Rob a pure spectacle, something that is a feast for the eyes with the ability to capture the imagination and heart of the viewer. He's doing this by recommending to Rob the 2022 Bollywood epic, RRR (RISE. ROAR. REVOLT.)! This fictionalized telling of the real-life meeting of Indian revolutionaries Komaram Bheem and Alluri Sitarama Raju takes on all the traits that make Bollywood such an entrancing genre. Larger than life action, enthralling colors and kinetic dance sequences that draw the eyes to screen at all times. There is no shortage of heart as this budding friendship is put to the test as Bheem attempts to find Malli, a young girl kidnapped for their village by English colonialists who have enlisted Raju to hunt down the man trying to rescue her.
The spectacle of this film rivals much of what we see as the modern American blockbuster, but will Rob love it as much as Ray does? You'll have to tune in to find out!

For this month's episode of A COPY OF A COPY, Ray and Rob are revisiting a favorite genre, spaghetti westerns, to examine a remake they're dubbing the "spiritual remake". A movie that isn't a direct remake, but an homage to a specific film or genre. To do this, they're watching the Sergio Leone classic THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY and the 2008 South Korean homage, THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE WEIRD. Both films center on a trio of characters on the search for a treasure, but both take their own distinct paths to get to their explosive conclusions.
Leone's classic holds the heart of many, which most call the best the genre has to offer, while its South Korean counterpart came at a time where the western genre was having a moment within their cultural film community. But does it do enough to truly capture the spaghetti western genre thus calling it a remake? Tune in to find out!

He continues to push Ray out of his comfort zone by recommending the 1989 Body Horror/Dark Comedy HOW TO GET AHEAD IN ADVERTISING! It centers on pompous ad executive Denis Bagley, who is neck deep in formulating a new campaign for a pimple cream, when he begins to question the moral validity of his profession. However, something decides to pop-up to force Denis back into the life he began to shun. This British cult classic stars Richard E. Grant (GOSFORD PARK, DEATH OF A UNICORN) in a truly Gonzo performance and sees him reteaming with director Bruce Robinson following their hit WITHNAIL AND I.
A cynical and hard-hitting take on the state of advertising in the modern world, HOW TO GET AHEAD IN ADVERTISING finds a prescience for a world they didn't realize we would be living in in the year 2026. But will Bruce Robinson's rage at the late Thatcher-era England prove to be too preachy for Ray? Or will he be able to overcome the body horror elements to find something worthwhile? Tune in this week to find out!

March is a five Monday month and that means it's time again for another Kid's special edition of SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM! That also means we're welcoming back Ray and Rob's favorite co-host, Mr. KittyKaiju! For his first episode of the season, Ray and Rob have decided to kick things off with a bang by recommending to him one of their favorite movies from their childhood, the 1987 Mel Brooks classic, SPACEBALLS!
A send-up of all things Star Wars (with a mixture of other famous sci-fi franchises), the film centers on Lonestar, a rugged space smuggler who along with his sidekick Barf, are enlisted to rescue Princess Vespa and her companion droid Dot Matrix from the evil hands of Dark Helmet and his legion of Spaceballs! Starring Bill Pullman (INDEPENDANCE DAY, CASPER), Daphne Zuniga (THE SURE THING, MODERN GIRLS), John Candy (PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES, UNCLE BUCK) and Rick Moranis (STREETS OF FIRE, HONEY, I SHRUNK THE KIDS), this comedy classic is Mel Brooks at the top of his game. A film for all ages! However, the generational divide is not always easy to traverse, so will Mr. KittyKaiju love this movie as much as Ray and Rob does? You're going to have to tune in to find out!

It's almost the end of March and that means it's time for a brand-new episode of HELLO MOVIES, MY OLD FRIEND! Ray and Rob have decided to revisit the 1988 Australian comedy YOUNG EINSTEIN! This passion project written/directed/starring Australian mad man Yahoo Serious is an absurdist fictional take on the life of renowned genius Albert Einstein. Throwing historical accuracy to the wind, Yahoo Serious takes young Albert from a humble apple farmer in the Australian outback to the halls of Paris in his quest to make his mark as a famous scientist. When his formula for splitting a beer atom puts him on the radar of fellow scientific rebel Marie Curie (Played by Odile Le Clezio), their budding romance puts Albert in the crosshairs of Preston Preston, a fellow intent on winning Marie's affections by stealing Albert brilliance.
While the events are highly fabricated, the message of remaining true to who you are remains the central focus of Albert's story. Will Yahoo Serious's quirky and irreverent style still ring true with the nostalgia that Ray and Rob have for this movie? Tune in to find out!

Car RayRob is back with a brand-new episode of SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM!
It's Ray's turn and he's bringing something we've never done on our flagship show, an animated feature! He's recommending to Rob the 2022 animated hit PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH! This third installment of the SHREK spinoff centers on the titular character, voiced as always by the great Antonio Banderas (DESPERADO, SPY KIDS), as he searches for the mythical "Last Wish" which he hopes to use to replenish his nine lives, which is has found himself at the end of. In his quest, he reunites with Kitty Softpaws (Voiced by Selma Hayek) and Perrito, marking the first franchise appearance of Harvey Guillen (WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS, WEREWOLVES WITHIN). This trio must ward off other interested parties, as well as The Wolf, who is hellbent on ending Puss's final life.
While Rob is very familiar with the Shrek franchise, these spinoffs have eluded him. However, Ray swears you can jump in on the third movie and not miss a beat! Tune in to find out if he's right and to find out if Rob loves this movie as much as Ray!

Car RayRob are back with a brand-new episode of A COPY OF A COPY!
For this week's pair of films, Ray and Rob are tackling a new kind of remake they have yet to discuss, the American film remade for a foreign audience! They're doing this by revisiting Alexander Payne's 2004 Dramedy classic SIDEWAYS, as well as the 2009 Japanese language remake, SAIDOWEIZU!
Both films center on a down on their luck writer who takes their quasi-famous actor best friend to California wine country for his bachelor party, and the shenanigans that ensue forces both men to reexamine their life choices and ultimately decide how they want to spend their rest of their lives. Each film picks a different area within California to focus their stories, and each one examines the complexity of failure and success in both life and love through their respective cultural lenses!
We often see foreign films remade for American audiences, but the reverse is much less common. Tune in to find out how SAIDOWEIZU stacks up against the classic original!

It's a brand-new month which means a brand-new slate of episodes here at Car RayRob!
For Rob's episode of SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM, he's decided to bring his first challenge of the year by recommending to Ray the John Cassavetes classic A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE! This gem of art house filmmaking is one of Cassavetes numerous collaborations with real-life wife Gena Rowlands (OPENING NIGHT, THE NOTEBOOK), in a truly powerhouse performance. Rowlands stars as Mabel, a working-class mother whose mental health becomes questionable after a night out on her own after being stood up by her husband, Nick, played by Peter Falk (COLUMBO, WINGS OF DESIRE).
While Cassavetes is widely held as one of Hollywood's great directors, he can be divisive among film viewers. His gritty, ultra-realistic style has been said to make his films a taxing experience on the audience. Because of this, there is no guarantee that Ray is going to like this film.
Will Gena Rowland's performance for the ages hook Ray into her tale of woe? Or will Cassavetes almost cinema-verité style prove too much for Ray to handle? Tune in to find out!
