On this two-year anniversary of George Floyd's death we go way back to the real roots of slavery and discuss what they have to do with the milling industry and trains, and why on some level we are all slaves to our government. Rural America, or "white trash" areas as people like to call it, is often overlooked by society, traditionally people in rural communities "just want to be left alone." But resources are scarce and life is challenging. In this episode of true crime, Betty shares the story of being in law enforcement in a small town and finding herself in the middle of defending her sister from a violent crime.
Betty Frizzell is the former chief of the Winfield, Missouri Police Department. Betty began her law enforcement career in 1997 with an aim to assist victims of sexual assault. She served as a Deputy Sheriff in both the Lincoln and Ripley County (MO) Sheriff’s Departments. During her time with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department, she helped develop the first Sexual Assault Response Teams unit and was the first female officer to join the S.W.A.T. team. She later worked as a police officer and gang investigator for the city of Louisiana, Missouri before becoming the Chief of the Winfield Police Department. Upon retiring from policing, Frizzell began teaching criminal justice courses and police as a professor and CTE teacher. She holds an M.F.A in Writing and an M.S. in Criminal Justice Administration. She served as a member of the Citizens Advisory Board for the State of Missouri Department of Corrections: Probation and Parole Division and was honored as the Lincoln County Law Enforcement Officer of the Year in 2001. Also, she was honored as a Starfish award winner from Seattle Children's Hospital and received an award of recognition from the State of WA Department of Health and Social Services in 2016. Frizzell currently resides in Seattle, Washington, but remains closely connected to Missouri.

Why do women feel they need to show up strong and independent if they continually get called brash, assertive, and even bitchy? When is it okay to be gruff and domineering, and when is it okay to be nurturing? In this episode, Gloria Romeria (the first woman Democratic Senator for the state of California) shatters the topic of gender bias and dive deep into how women further the "oppression" by playing the victim and where we're headed. In Romero's new book, JUST NOT THAT LIKABLE, she uncovers the roots of long-held misconceptions and biases against powerful women in the workplace—starting with gender socialization before birth. From infancy through adolescence, parents routinely reinforce gender bias by treating their daughters and sons differently, in everything from clothing choices to assigning chores to the tone of voice they use. No wonder girls grow up to be women who strive to strike a balance between being sweet and strong—often to the detriment of their career advancement and authentic self. And, as Romero makes clear, the conflicts and consequences are even worse for women of color (who tend to get labeled as “the angry Black woman,” “fiery Latina,” or “Asian tiger mom”) and women of a certain age (aka, the “menopausal mood-swinging matriarch”). Rejecting the notion that women should play “nice” and go along to get along, Romero instead urges women to confront and topple gender stereotypes head-on. Yet, as she stresses, JUST NOT THAT LIKABLE is not one of those “how to fix this in ten quick steps” books. As she impresses on women, changing the status quo will take courage, commitment, and a lot of hard work. “It has to end somewhere,” Romero writes. “But first it has to start. And that typically means that someone needs to raise her hand, raise her voice, just outright object to what is taking place, has been taking place, and will continue to take place if we just carry on the status quo over these next 400 years.”

Many of us receive our paychecks electronically deposited to our bank accounts and presume it's safe and protected by the FDIC, it's not, because it's monopoly money. At any point the system could crash, people who are wealthy on paper would be as broke as the next guy should a handful of ones and zeros get moved around. Try going into the bank and asking to withdraw more than a few hundred bucks, they can't, and won't do it. Try getting your money in gold bars, it won't happen, because money isn't based on gold anymore.

Deacon Dawit Muluneh is the author of Hopeless Romantic: The Untold History of Ethiopia, I Need Answers and is a Ph.D. student of Ethiopian and Arabic Studies. He grew up in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Chuch and at age seven, his family immigrated to the US from Ethiopia.
Muluneh graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Upon completing his education at Virginia Tech, he worked at a patent and trademark office for three years. At age 27 he sold his house and car and traveled to a monastery in Ethiopia - Debris Libanos - to learn the traditional teachings of the church. Afterward, he was ordained a deacon in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
After a year and a half, Muluneh returned to the States to join a graduate program at the Catholic University of America, where he currently studies Ethiopian and Arabic Studies. He has been trained in Ge'ez, Arabic, Coptic, and Greek, and is currently preparing to take his Ph.D. comprehension exams. He lives in Washington, DC.
