  • In this episode of "Breaking the Binary," we delve into identity, success and being an expert with Dr. Jessica Allen.

Dr Jessica Allen is currently a Senior Lecturer in Chemical and Renewable Energy Engineering at the University of Newcastle. Her research focuses on developing technology that can use renewable electricity for manufacturing green products from steel and aluminium to carbon and fuels like hydrogen and ammonia. Dr Allen is an engineer, a proud Novocastrian and mum of two (three if you include the dog…) who enjoys mountain biking and tap dancing.

We talk about the question asked to kids “what do you want to be when you grow up?”. How building an identity as an adult is often about more than work, having multiple careers and focusing our energy on what bring us value and what problems we want to solve in the world.

  • In this episode of 'Breaking the Binary,' we delve into the often unspoken struggles of feeling like an imposter in the workplace. Join us as we sit down with Annie Chayko, the Engineering Service Manager for the locally built RAN Minehunter in-service-support at Thales, Carrington. Annie shares her journey from the early days of her career to her current role, providing an honest and vulnerable conversation about the challenges she’s come across, often as the only woman in an engineering space.

We talk about how feeling like an imposter is often a natural result of the environment we are in, especially in man dominated spaces; spaces that aren’t designed for women or gender-diverse people. We hope you’re encouraged to lean into what makes you special and know that your experiences, especially the hard ones, are an asset to you and make you who you are.
