CONTENT WARNING: Suicide, self-harm, animal abuse, and hate crimes. Jack spent so much time setting up this album that he forgot to talk about it in the previous episode! It's okay though, Spencer stuck around so we could all peek through the Dirty Window of Metallica's most turbulent period of their careers, all thanks to the documentary "Some Kind of Monster."

Before Jack and Spencer get into St. Anger, they dive into the history of Metallica's past grievances up to the year 2000, which contributed to their emotional state before producing the most loathed album of all time. This primarily includes the infamous dispute between drummer Lars Ulrich and Spotify's dirty uncle: Napster. Also Jack figures out a way to bring up Radiohead because he's a creep he's a weirdo.

After the mediocre release of "Warning" (2000), Green Day needed a top-notch followup. The Anaheim punk trio set to work on their seventh studio album: "Cigarettes and Valentines," a deviation from the acoustic/folk-punk sound that fans rejected in "Warning." Before its 2003 release, band members claim the album's master-tapes were stolen, never to be recovered. In lieu of doing it all over again, the band would write and release "American Idiot" (2004), a smash-hit that rocketed them to more fame than they knew how to waste.

In 1991, brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher formed Oasis, a band that focused on doing as little work as possible to become worldwide rock stars. Their simple, very British hooks gave a spark to the Britpop genre and took the world by storm... as did their wild and volatile relationship.

October 25, 2019, famed producer and egomaniac Kanye West released his ninth studio album: a Christian Hip-Hop record titled "Jesus is King." Scattered throughout this album, fans noticed remnants of the leaked album "Yandhi," originally set to release September 29, 2018 before disappearing in the wake of Kanye's rebirth. Rebirth, that is, as both a born-again Christian and a new-age televangelist.

In 1968, Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band (of slaves) began recording their upcoming double album on Frank Zappa's new label: "Straight Records." Described as "experimental rock," one host questions whether that makes it music's baking-soda-volcano, or The Manhattan Project.

EDIT (9/11/2019): It comes with a great shock to both of us here at Blunderphonics to hear about the recent passing of Daniel Johnston; just a day after the posting of our episode about his influence on music.
For those listening, please keep in mind this was recorded before the news.
In the 1980s, a strange McDonalds employee was wandering throughout Austin, Texas handing out his homemade cassettes to any hipster that would listen. That man? The godfather of alternative music himself, Daniel Johnston. And everyone clapped.

On October 23, 2006, punk-rock sensations and overnight-emos My Chemical Romance debuted their smash-hit concept album "The Black Parade." In spite of freak accidents, turmoil among the members, and a few spooky situations, the album was critically lauded and served as a send-off to the emo scene of the 2000s.
Sorry about my explosive mic-technique this episode, my second pop-filter does a lot more legwork than I thought! -S.

December 8, 1987, Prince's 16th studio album was about to debut. The album, a return-to-form funk bible dubbed "The Black Album" was just a week from release. Almost inexplicably, record stores received the order to recall the album--all 500,000 copies of it. For nearly seven years, the world was in the dark on what happened to this legendary lost record. But what really happened in the making of The Black Album, and how does it tie back to Prince's 9th album, "Sign o the Times?"

In 1966, California's rough and rowdy Beach Boys were at it again. Over the next two years, what might have been their triumphant 12th album slowly became the best album that was never made. In 2011, the world was given a glimpse into the once-lost album named "Smile."
And it definitely sounded like an album from the 60s.

In 2008, hard rock superstars and living-stains Guns N' Roses released a long-anticipated record called Chinese Democracy. Featuring a general ambiguity about what it really wanted to sound like, the album was met with... mixed opinions. A lukewarm launch and a delayed production aren't all there is to tell about Chinese Democracy, though, so strap in for the "Blunderphonics: Axl Rose Special."
