  • What is it like to receive a positive Trisomy 21 diagnosis during early pregnancy and then prepare to give birth to and become a mother to a child with Down syndrome? Today's guest, the talented film director and writer, Amber McGinnis, opens up and gifts us with a very detailed and vulnerable account of her experience with this reality. She shares everything that she wishes she had known before and during her journey, how she got through a completely unmedicated hospital birth, and she also talks about the unique challenges of breastfeeding a baby with DS. In this episode we also explore how to offer better support to our own loved ones if they receive a surprising genetic test result and how all of us would benefit from approaching the differently abled community with love and curiosity instead of fear and ignorance.

This Episode is the Season 2 Finale!

    ABOUT TODAY'S GUEST:

Ashley Hanna-Morgan is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) specializing in Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders, as well as Grief and Loss. Ashley earned her Bachelor’s in English Literature at UCLA. After attending Baylor University for her Master’s in Social Work, Ashley became more aware of and interested in Perinatal Mood and Anxiety disorders after she and her husband both worked through it personally after the birth of their daughter. In 2016, she wrote the Afterglow Curriculum and started the first free Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Mindfulness Therapy based support group in Los Angeles for parents with Postpartum Depression and Anxiety. In 2017, she published a collection of poetry called I Gave Birth to My Heart that she hopes will throw back the curtains and shed some light on what Postpartum Depression and Anxiety actually feel like, as well as, most importantly, what the recovery looked like. She is currently the Postpartum Support International Regional Coordinator for Reno, Nevada, where she now lives with her husband, Jayson, her Shih Tzu, Obi Wan, and her daughters and inspiration, Emerie Violet & Aerelyn Jayne. When Ashley is not advocating for parental mental health, she loves to explore nature, practice yoga, experiment in the kitchen, read with a cup of tea, meditate, and write.

  • Pain is one of the most common fears that women have about childbirth, which is why I am so excited to be welcoming a leading expert in pain management on the podcast for a two episode series. Today, in Part One, we discuss why Dr. Jody Thomas is on a mission to improve the pain experience of children and adults everywhere and how years of working with chronically ill children and also her own experiences with childbirth and having a baby in the NICU have charged her passion to empower kids and parents to be in control of their pain experience. What is pain? How does it work? Do people feel pain differently? Why? How do newborns, babies and children experience pain? How can parents create the best possible pain experience for their children during medical procedures? What do you need to know if your baby is in the NICU? How can you have a positive pain experience during childbirth?

Hear the answers to all these questions, PLUS Dr. Thomas begins to share with us her own birth stories, and I'm not kidding you, my jaw was on the floor while she told me BOTH of her birth stories. After you hear these two episodes I think you will also understand why I now refer to her as the "Jedi Master of Pain." She's incredible. Buckle Up.

  • One of the most frequently left out topics of conversation when we have conversations about giving birth is fathers and non-gestational parents. But not today! Today I’m talking with Dr. Daniel Singley a psychologist whose life work and the focus of his practice is devoted to mens issues and specifically the transition of men into fathers and couples into parents. Whether you are the one about to give birth or the one supporting your partner as they give birth, all parents will get so so much out of what Dr. Singley has to say during our conversation.  We talk about perinatal mental health and how to know when to reach out for help, what signs to look for, how couples can learn to communicate with each other and thrive in their new parent roles together, about intimacy and how having a baby can change the way we approach intimacy with each other, and much much more.

Dr. Singley is a San Diego-based board certified psychologist and Director of The Center for Men’s Excellence. His research and practice focus on men’s mental health with a particular emphasis on reproductive psychology and the transition to fatherhood.

Dr. Singley won the American Psychological Association’s 2017 Practitioner of the Year Award from the Division on Men & Masculinities. He is Past President of the APA’s Section on Positive Psychology and currently serves on the Board of the APA’s Society for the Psychological Study of Men and Masculinities as well as Postpartum Support International.

He conducts training and presentations around the country to assist individuals and organizations to enhance their level of father inclusiveness, and founded the grant-funded Basic Training for New Dads, Inc. nonprofit and Padre Cadre social networking application just for dads in order to give new fathers the tools they need to be highly engaged with their infants as well as their partners.

  • A calm UNMEDICATED HOME BIRTH is what award winning photo journalist and doula Heather Gallagher decided she wanted when she found out she was pregnant. But, as you'll find out during her story, life sometimes has a way of throwing us a curve ball. In this episode we talk about what it’s like to plan for a home birth, have all of your prenatal care with a midwife, be two and a half weeks overdue, labor at home with a team of midwives and then suddenly experience a dramatic and necessary change to your birth plan. We also talk candidly about breastfeeding, mastitis, mental health struggles, postpartum sex, and much much more.

  • This episode is PART TWO of a two-part birth story in which a new mom shares all about her experience conceiving, carrying and delivering twins! During this second part of her very exciting and wild story we hear about the delivery of her twins via c-section, what it’s like to receive magnesium sulfate before delivering premature babies, what it’s like to breastfeed twins in the NICU and she also opens up about some pretty intense complications she experienced during her c-section and afterwards during the healing process as well. We also have a very important discussion about getting to know and love your new mom bod as well as what it’s really like to rediscover your sexuality after giving birth.

As usual this conversation is a very intimate and candid exploration about the realities of new motherhood.

She is a high-risk mother with cystic fibrosis and she had multiple complications during her pregnancy such as trying for years to conceive before success, being diagnosed with an incompetent cervix, having a cerclage placed, being put on strict bedrest, dealing with something called "an irritable uterus," and more. We also learn what the doctor is looking for during your first ultrasound and we talk all about infertility struggles. Spoiler alert... it's a lot more common than you think!
