Für über zwölf Jahre von 1949 bis 1962 (mit einem Jahr Pause zwischen 1954-1955) erzählte diese Serie die Fälle des "Mannes mit dem aktionsgeladenen Spesenkonto, Amerikas berühmten freiberuflichen Versicherungsdetektiv Johnny Dollar".
Johnny war ein gekonnter "Bewahrer" seines Ausgabenkontos. Der Name der Show beruht darauf, dass er zum Ende jeder Sendung seine Ausgaben zusammengerechnet hat und die Folge mit dem Satz "End of report... Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar" beendete.
