  • For years, feral hogs have been causing problems for farmers and landowners in the United States. They reproduce so quickly that their population has exploded, causing serious damage to crops, livestock, and even wildlife. In an attempt to control their population, some states have allowed hunters to take them down.

In today’s episode of the Back to the Lodge, Patrick talks about why feral hogs are being hunted, what changed his perspective about hunting hogs, and when is the best time of year to hunt wild boars.

Also in the show will be the founder of Perfect Pattern Sportcoats, Tim and his wife Austyn Swisher. They will share what people are saying about their products, their future plans for women’s apparel, and how to get great discounts and free shipping at Perfect Pattern Sportcoats.

Perfect Pattern Sportcoats is a high-end menswear company that was born when an avid South Carolina waterfowler identified a problem and decided to create a solution. As avid duck hunters, they wanted a finely tailored sportcoat that was designed with the highest attention to detail while making a bold but tasteful statement. This was accomplished by teaming up with Mossy Oak as Official Licensees and incorporating the absolute best camo patterns into every sportcoat that they make.

    Favorite Quotes

10:09 - "So here's the problem in Texas, if you're a farmer, let's say you have a hundred thousand acres, you're making your living off of crops and cattle but you can't free-feed your cattle. The hogs will go in there and eat all the food and starve the cattle. The hogs also attract the coyotes, and the coyotes eat the calves. Wild boar will dig three feet in the ground, so the tractors don't like that either and the cattle don't like that because they can break a leg. There are so many problems. The amount of destruction is in the billions of dollars a year from feral hogs." - Patrick Mudge

  • The state of Tennessee is known for its rich outdoors heritage. For generations, outdoor enthusiasts from around the world have been enjoying Tennessee's great outdoors by hunting, fishing, and trapping. However, the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency (TWRA) has been making changes to the regulations governing these activities that have been leaving outdoorsmen disappointed.

Today's episode of the Back to the Lodge featured a special message from the founder of The Legends of the Outdoors National Hall of Fame, Garry Mason. In his message, Garry expresses his opinions on the changes to TWRA regulations and their implications for hunters.

The Legends of the Outdoors National Hall of Fame has been established to recognize those outdoor sportsmen and sportswomen who, through countless hours of hard work and devotion to the outdoors, in both hunting and fishing, have played an integral part in setting the standards and guidelines for the rest of the outdoor world to follow.

    In Today's Episode

02:53 - What keeps the team busy for the next few weeks

05:59 - Why outdoorsmen were upset about the changes to the TWRA regulations

09:36 - Message from Garry Mason, CEO of the Legends of the Outdoors National Hall of Fame

19:59 - Patrick and Will's argument about TWRA regulation changes

10:35 - "I'm all for creating opportunities. And I think that we all try to work hard together, to try to create opportunities for more waterfowl hunters, to enjoy what we have here in Tennessee and particularly in middle Tennessee and Northwest Tennessee. But under the guise of creating more opportunities, TWRA actually created less opportunities in my opinion when they formed these blinds in the tier blinds and caused them not to be able to be hopped by other hunters." - Garry Mason

15:25 - "We, as hunters, must work together with our agency, with TWRA, and we must work together with them to help make it better for future hunters and leaving a legacy for those that are following our footsteps. But let's not take opportunities away from the existing hunters, no matter how close they live to WMA. Let's create more opportunities for those hunters and let's enhance the waterfowl hunting in the state of Tennessee." - Garry Mason

19:59 - "We're already losing a lot of folks in the outdoors. We definitely don't need chasing folks off as part of an experiment. It's worked for a long time, the way it is." - Will Easley

  • It's easy to get caught up in the gear race when it comes to enjoying the outdoors. We are constantly inundated with images and stories of adventurers using the latest and greatest equipment, when in reality, this is not the case at all. Some of the most memorable outdoor experiences were without the fanciest equipment.

So, whether you're a seasoned outdoorsman or just getting started, sometimes all you really need is a sense of adventure, willingness to explore, a good attitude and a positive outlook.

In today’s episode of the Back to the Lodge Podcast, Patrick, Nick, and Will talk about Nick's first effort at unloading trucks, Will's involvement in philanthropic events, and why enjoying the outdoors doesn't have to be expensive.

10:30 - "Either you have money or you don't, you have credit or you don't, people are looking for value. And when you could buy something once and just keep it, that's great. But don't just buy something just for a name or just for a commercial, infomercial, or whatever it is." - Will Easley

19:14 - "When you're there (philanthropic events), you can have that experience, the emotional tie, and the emotional connection to people that are speaking. You can't get everything online. So hopefully that 2022 will be better for everybody." - Will Easley

22:58 - "There's so much negativity. There's so much division. It's time to put the people at the top, at the front of the line, in front of the screen, or on social media that are making a difference, a positive impact." - Patrick Mudge

27:55 - "I've hunted in great blinds and pits and everything else. But what I go back to for my peace of mind and my enjoyment is we sit at the edge of a cornfield, the edge of a cut field, and I hunt with a 69 rifle. We just sit there, you cut up, and you enjoy yourself." - Will Easley

28:26 - "Hunting doesn't have to be this overcomplicated high-speed thing that everybody tries to make. Some of the social media things that you see, you don't have to look at all the big, sparkly, and cool stuff. Some stuff just works. And it just worked for decades. And if it still works, you make it better. You adapt overtime. The world changes, but you don't have to keep buying the biggest and the best and most expensive just to keep up with the Joneses." - Will Easley

  • The COVID19-Pandemic brought everyone closer yet further at the same time. People who have no communication with their families have reconnected while their connection outside is barely sustained through the internet. With the vaccines rolling out and multiple states started to open entertainment spots to the public, recreational activity is something every family should get themselves into.

Reconnect with nature, breathe fresh air, listen to the birds sing, and see the sun rises at the horizon for a new beginning of life. However, it does not mean existing rules are lax either.

In today’s episode of Back To The Lodge Podcast, our hosts will have a fun-filled talk of competitions, wine preferences, animal welfare, and the benefits of recreational activities to reinforce your family connections and reconnect yourself with nature. With people staying indoors for months and doing the same thing over and over, something that would spice lives and move bodies become desirable and a must.

    Enjoy!

    Favorite Quotes

“I tell everybody goals are so important. In the air force, we call our military, we call goals our mission. And I needed a mission.” - Rick

“I had a mission and I was going to go in there and I was going to change all the Memphis, save the world. I quickly realized I couldn't do that, but I could put people, I could give them a mission again, that were veterans, make them feel important again. And we went there. We did some good stuff other than secure people.” - Rick

“The parents don't get government assistance. There's no money coming in. So the only food these kids are getting is from Perkins, or they're getting food from school. So during this time, when the school shut down, they’re going to get hungry. So another small mission I had was when the money comes into our gym, the money that sets aside for me, I put it back into taking care of people.” - Rick

“It's just something I feel like I was born to do, and I'm going to keep doing it till the day I died. And it's about taking care of veterans, taking care of people in need, and people getting out of prison. They need a second chance.” - Rick

“I was on my own. Just luckily thank God, I was strong enough that I realized that I needed him.” - Rick

“Whether you're religious or otherwise, putting power back in people's hands and giving them a mission, giving them a reason to go on and pay it forward, I think is the thing now.” - Will

“He had a plan and we're living out the plan. So everybody out there has an equal opportunity to live in that plan.” - Rick

“It's all perspective. So don't judge somebody by how they're reacting to whatever they're going through, because it may not be anything to you, but to them, it's going to be the worst thing they've ever gone through.” - Matt
