Success is something you navigate for yourself. My guest Jill Bergman shares insights from her successful career and gives electric advice on leadership, networking, mentorship and more.
Burnout helps no one. When you need to take a break or shift to part time, don't slog through. You can negotiate work schedules to work for you.Make a career dashboard to understand your own rhythms and patterns. Fill in the gaps using this self knowledge.Your career has two major phases. The early part is a doing phase wher eyou acquire technical skills. The later part is the leading phase is about holding vision and sharing your expertise.Getting licensed is about valuing yourself as a professional. It pays compound interest throughout your career. The tests are actually designed to be taken by someone 3-5 years out of school.Show up authentically to build trust with clients, colleagues and co-workers. Use humor to be accessible and relatable, storytelling to connect with and engage your audience, and reflective listening to create psychological safety. The best way to advance in your career is to teach others to do what you are doing.Be generous with your time. Build a professional network and give back through mentoring, committee work and thought leadership.CONNECT WITH JILL:

The creative process goes through multiple divergent and convergent steps, each time becoming more granular. Know the constraints, understand how and why they apply, and clearly define the opportunities.Gather data on both the voice of the customer and the process to understand how to best meet needs. Make these your decision making criteria.Use the data informed decision process to communicate to your team as well so that they don;t go down rabbit holes exploring ideas that aren't high impact.Use priorities from your decision structure to help in value engineering. Wanna go lights out on your next creative pursuit? It won't come from slogging away, over-analyzing everything or getting lost in the busywork. If maintaining has become your way of life, you need a big time reset. Listen in to hear how to rewire your brain and body to be a creative powerhouse.
Take those waking moments before your brain kicks into overdrive to feel the love for what and who yo have in life. Then keep the oxytocin flowing with an affirmation. Add a meditation and journaling session to complete your morning ritual and start your day resilient.Once you start work, take a break when you get stuck to reset and do something inspiring instead of powering through. Introduce play into your approach to work and don't forget to ask, "so what?" to keep things in perspective. Collaborate with others to introduce a fresh perspective.Prevent overwhelm and exhaustion by having good boundaries and making self care your first resort, not what you do after you've fallen apart.Celebrate the big and small winsLook for ways you can learn something new or push the boundaries with something that's gotten too familiar.Listen to the Space Doctor Sessions on my YouTube Channel: https://youtu.be/rZYQpt6MBS8

As monsters go, Jealousy is one of the scariest. Nothing makes you feel less safe than being the target of someone's envy. You don't know who you can trust or what (mis)perceptions your coworkers might have about you. Listen in to learn how to thrash Ol'Green Eyes.
Jealousy feeds on lack. Any situation where resources like a promotion, raise, leadership role, positive attention, etc. are scarce can spawn it. Jealousy uses confirmation bias as a weapon. When someone is jealous, they become blind to a person's good qualities and hyper fixated on their shortcomings. You can use Jealousy as a mirror. When you understand what activates it, you can gain a lot of clarity about the big picture and interpersonal dynamics.Comparisons with others give Jealousy superpowers. Comparisons to your past selves gives you superpowers as you appreciate how far you've come. Remember to factor in personal priorities so you see your whole life, not just your work life.Collaborations are a Jealousy repellent because they create "parallel" work opportunities help everyone play to their strength instead of wasting energy trying to one up each other.Check out my Stressless Success Course here: https://architectingpodcast.com/index.php/stressless/

Conflict shouldn't produce a trauma response, but it so often does. If you find yourself fighting back like a vigilante hero, caving in while you silently stew, or running away from the issue (and people), you need to develop some better skills. Listen in to learn more.
We all have different ways of responding to conflict based on how comfortable we are with encountering it. When it feels adversarial, a healthy response is hard to summon. When we believe in something, it's difficult not to get emotionally attached and feel personally attacked when that cause isn't accepted by others.Collaborative conflict handling helps to move past assumptions about the other party and move towards a better understanding of the issues underlying a position taken. The goal is to arrive at a solution that allows the best that can happen, not the best in your opinion.Check out my Stressless Success Course here: https://architectingpodcast.com/index.php/stressless/

You might not be a world class expert or the ultimate authority on an issue you care about. Maybe you can't teach the graduate level class on it. Guess what? Most people need the intro level information. And you can share it. In a way that's far more relatable and useful than most experts. Listen in to this episode to overcome imposter syndrome and leverage who you are and what you know.
Imposter syndrome is most likely to inflict people who feel they don't belong. Yet your voice as a young professional, woman, minority reflects a much needed diverse and accessible point of view. You know you have Imposter syndrome if you've dealt with any of the following: fear of failing, fear of success/being too visible, perfectionism, analysis paralysis, overperfoming, chasing qualifications.Don't wait and hope for an opportunity. Make one for yourself by taking action instead of waiting for permission.Celebrate the little wins- they build momentum and provide you with the receipts that prove you are not a fraud.Check out my Stressless Success Course here: https://architectingpodcast.com/index.php/stressless/

Stop being the pick me person. You know, the one who tries way to hard but still doesn't get the payoff. In this episode, you'll get the downlow on how to focus on what you want to be known for.
There are no accidents. Your fear of success is the only thing blocking you from opportunities.Focusing on what you want to be known for is way different than ambition. It's your differentiator, your personal brand, how you are inspired to make a difference.Once you understand your brand, you can easily determine whether to say yes to an opportunity (even if it feels terrifyingly risky) or whether it's not the best use of your valuable time, talent and energy. When you communicate your brand, others start to bring you opportunities for things you actually want to do.Be clear about what you want, but open to the fact that it can look different that the way you thought it would. You will evolve as a person and your life circumstances will change, but your why will keep you consistently moving toward a life and job you love.Nothing is ever wasted. Every aligned action is helping to build the foundation of the success you want.Check out my Stressless Success Course here: https://architectingpodcast.com/index.php/stressless/

Have you been accepting the premise that success is only about meeting expectations, validation and obligations? If you want a career in different areas, listen to this episode to learn what's really behind success: motivation.
There are two types of motivation. Intrinsic motivation is all about the love of doing something while extrinsic is about earning a reward or avoiding a punishment. Our culture is set up on an extrinsic system, trapping many people into a life where they are disconnected from their passions because they are too afraid of what they can lose if they don;t do what's expected. We need both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation to be successful on our own terms.Learning your dominant motivation style and how to bring in your less dominant one when needed let's you live a balance life.Check out my Stressless Success Course here: https://architectingpodcast.com/index.php/stressless/

Did you think shining bright was just about drawing attention to yourself? Let's change that channel right now. You have a purpose and when you live it unapologetically, the light you shine in service to others also lights up the career paths of other creatives who want to make a difference.

*womp womp* You walked out of that meeting feeling about 3" tall. Before you slide into depression or get angry, think about how you were an accomplice to your own misery. Having a no good, terrible, very bad day? In this episode, I answer a question from a member of our Architecting community on how to have more good days and how to be more gentle with yourself on those less than good ones.
It's tempting to overgive on a bad day because you feel guilty, but that's the worst thing you can do because stress impacts your focus, cognitive ability, creativity and mood.Reserve 25% of your energy for self care each day. On a low energy or stressful day it's even more important to be gentle with yourself.Make a hard day easier by taking time to reset, prioritizing low key tasks that give you small wins and finding fun and enjoyable ways to keep momentum going like hand sketching or model building.Build up resources you can leverage. Delegate more to others and build up their skill sets, know who you can ask for help, hire support for errands, childcare, or homekeeping.Check out my Stressless Success Course here: https://architectingpodcast.com/index.php/stressless/

In these shaky economic times, it's really easy to want to stay in a job even when what you're doing might be blocking you from your true career path. In this episode, I'll help you rip off that security blanket and help you claim the opportunities you need to have an impactful vocation.
Playing it safe is actually waaaay more stressful than chasing your dreams. You are allowing your energy to be drained instead of charged.Just because you are good at doing something, doesn't mean it fulfills you.Be like water and find a way to get where you need to go- no matter what. Even small moves make a big difference over time.Succeeding should feel normal, because you are meant to do this.Surround yourself with resources and people that want to see you succeed, not ones who shame you for dreaming big.Check out my Stressless Success Course here: https://architectingpodcast.com/index.php/stressless/

In this ask me anything session, hear my response to a member of the Architecting Community who is feeling a little less than creative lately. Learn my top rituals to restore your creativity and keep it flowing.
Creativity ebbs and flow with your level of energy and inspiration. Don't expect a steady state or feel bad if you aren't always at max creativity.Minimize creativity killers. Look at things that are draining your physical, emotional, spiritual and mental energy and think about how to rest and recover from the toll they take. Look at the root causes of the things that are creating stress in your life.Cultivate a creativity ritual so that you can train yourself to feel more comfortable in creative flow.Your unblah ritual starts with re-regulating your nervous system with meditation/movement. Follow that up with brain dump time where you journal, doodle or sketch.Finish your ritual with DND creative time. Begin with 30 minutes and work your way up from there.Give Architecting a Google review- be sure to name the episode! https://g.page/r/CVYGVmEtsUjdEAI/review

When is spilling some tea more than just some idle gossip? When you connect on the regular with a group of people who believe in having and holding for others big visions about what's possible. Listen in to learn more about how a genius group can uplevel your career (and life).
Your life will match that of the people you spend the most time with. So surround yourself with those who make you feel inspired, can point you to resources, build your network and be a reliable sounding board when you're struggling. The difference between people who make a difference and those who don't is a willingness to take action. Your genius group can help direct that action and keep you motivated.Where you see obstacles, someone else sees a breakthrough. When you share your dreams with those who have already accomplished a lot, they seem a lot more doable than when you spend time with people who don't even understand why you want to evolve.Give Architecting a Google review- be sure to name the episode! https://g.page/r/CVYGVmEtsUjdEAI/review

Oh yay- you accomplished something big! How fast can you stick a pin in that bubble to burst it? Collectively, we are so focused on what we haven't done (yet) that we forget to celebrate our wins and those of others. Here's why that's super bad to do.
Every accomplishment deserves to be celebrated. By recognizing what's special and savoring it, you uplevel your point of view and can see even more ways to change the world while living your best life.Instead of worrying about whether you are worthy of a recognition, see it as a starting point not a destination. You now have agency to make an even greater impact.Don't fall prey to future tripping where you minimize what you did today. People who always hinge their happiness on the condition of a what they haven't done instead of what they have are on a hella future trip where success is never achievable.Make sure to clap up others for their wins. Help them see what's now possible instead of minimizing what they've done. You're not the same person after a win- you're a better and stronger one. Never let anyone shame you into thinking that you have a big ego because you upleveled.Give Architecting a Google review- be sure to name the episode! https://g.page/r/CVYGVmEtsUjdEAI/review

Whether you are newly responsible for something, or trying like hell to delegate already, your biggest obstacle is overcoming fear (yes really). Listen to this episode to learn how to burst the experience bubble without creating bad blood.
The experience bubble is the friction experienced when facing a learning curve. It can be scary to be confronted with this leading to behavior that inadvertently erodes trust in your work relationships. Some things that you might do if you are in an experience bubble are avoiding asking questions, not sharing work in progress to get feedback, only doing what you know will work and being defensive about criticism. If you are trying to delegate to someone in the experience bubble, avoid being authoritarian or disciplinary. Make sure that everyone knows they are working on a complex problem and that is will take iterations to get it right. Frame criticism as a question. Appreciate what the person is doing right.Give Architecting a Google review- be sure to name the episode! https://g.page/r/CVYGVmEtsUjdEAI/review

Burnout recovery involves more than just taking a break from stress. That's why so many vacations just make you wish you didn't have to head back to...wait! Could it be that burnout recovery is about creative restoration? Listen in to find out
Burnout comes from having a lack of resources, over-dominance of mundane and routine tasks and no space for inspiration. Creativity is what gives us the resiliency to avoid getting burned out. Creativity requires energy, not just time. That energy comes from inspiration.Often the sources of burnout are little things that we tolerate or take on that add up to a burden over time. When you feel too exhausted, apathetic or afraid to pursue exploratory, transformational or combinatorial work, you have choked off your creative supply. You only see adversity, not challenge or opportunity.Restore your creativity by breaking the cycle and challenging yourself to do something different and adventurous.Remember to share your insights on instagram and tag @architectingpodcast for a chance to win great prizes!

How amazing would it be to do work you are passionate about with colleagues and clients that share that passion every day? That can happen when you start leveraging your expertise and target your ideal clients.
Sales is not a dirty word- without sales, you don't have an ability to do the work that makes a difference.Know the difference between work you want to do, and work you are able to do. Offering a specific service to a specific audience helps you increase sales to your ideal clients. Industry specialization is what gets you hired and helps you recruit a great team.Your differentiator is your technical expertise and marketing is how you make clients aware of it.Expertise is marketed through writing, speaking and networking. Think about how you can do each of these proactively when you aren't selling. Clients seek information sometimes years before they are ready to hire.In your marketing, speak to the "one person" who is your ideal client. Use the 3-5 year rule: think of content that would have helped you 3-5 years ago and share that with your one person.CONNECT WITH JOHN:

Perfection, once valued as a symbol of quality, is now suspect. It's not inspiring or inclusive. If you want an impactful career, let go of the perfectionism and embrace the cringe.
Today is your starting line- no matter how you have succeeded or failed (learned), you get to next level each day.Cringe is your sign that you have upped your game, don't let it be what holds you back from your potential. To do great things, you have to take big actions and see risk as an adventure.Take the pressure off by advocating for what you care about, being sincere, and knowing you aren't meant for everyone.
