In this week's KZN Report, we've got all the very latest news on angling conditions following the severe storm in parts of the province on Monday, plus news on a new South African record AND the latest on the Sardine Run.
KZN had delivered a new unofficial SA record for a 14.3 kg snoek by Ashveer Mohan; we also have reports of significant catches - such as Garrick and Shad - across various locations, plus we provide safety advice for upcoming rough sea conditions.
Offshore: Couta have been making many happy anglers along the coast along with some beastly bottom fish.
Rock and surf: The shore angling has shifted more to spinning with the current target species changing from the summer inedibles to a more edible-dominated mix. Remember the sardines are on the way!
Freshwater: The rains have churned up the rivers and halted a lot of action. In the dams, the bass have continued to hammer the topwater frogs and the rain has not changed that bite much.
Cover art: Ashveer Mohan set a new South African record with a Natal Snoek/Queen Mackerel measuring 120cm, which converted to a weight of a massive 14.3kg. Ashveer landed this catch of a lifetime while spinning off Tugela. -

This week's Angler News KZN Fishing Report covers the latest fishing activity from the KZN coastline, we get into what we can expect from the spring tides, the full moon, gravitational pulls, and the warm water delaying the Sardine Run. Despite a slight decrease from last week’s catches, there have been notable catches from rock and surf fishing, including Shad, Garrick, and Bronze bream. Offshore fishing reports sizeable Couta catches up north and a focus on bottom fishing off Durban. Bass fishing in surrounding Durban dams has slowed, but trout fishing is picking up with the weather looking favorable for bending rods before the trout river season closes at the end of May.
In a nutshell…
Offshore: The offshore fishing has been phenomenal! The only issue or hurdle has been the big surf, making launching a clenching affair.
Rock and Surf : The rock and surf fishing has seen a mix of edibles mainly. The inedibles caught have been with the smaller pockets of bait fish or up north.
Freshwater: The rains and cold have made some dams muddy and unfishable but the general situation on the freshwater front has been one of good fishing despite the warm weather.

Don't miss this week's KZN Fishing Report to hear about Mr. Mike V’s jaw-dropping 179.8kg Zambezi catch off the North Coast. It’s a story that’s reeling in all the fishing enthusiasts!
This week, the fishing has been hotter than the weather.
Offshore: The tuna has been in short supply but the snoek and couta have more than made up for it.
Rock and surf: Scratching has been very productive along the entire coast. There are still some big nasties around, but the bulk of the catches have been of the edible kind.
Freshwater: The dams and Stillwaters have all been producing fish even with the cooler weather moving in. Remember there are always fish to catch but you can't catch them without going fishing.
Cover art: Dubbed as the catch of the year – ANSA’s very own Durban reporter, Mike Vlcek caught this magnificent 179.8kg Zambezi Shark off the lower North Coast last Friday night using live bait. After a four-hour fight this beauty was finally beached to give Mike the well-deserved bragging rights. Two anglers helped pull it over the shore break, removed the hook, and released it safely back into the water within a minute, hence Mike forgetting to turn off his headlamp! -

As autumn wanes into winter, KZN's waters are alive with a spectacular mix of edible and non-edible species, creating a fishing environment that's pulsating with potential. This time of year is not just any flourishing fishing period; it's a phenomenon, getting progressively better with each passing week. The seas are rich with bronze bream, mammoth kob, triple tail, tuna, couta, shad, pompano, dorado, and, for the thrill-seekers, an abundance of sharks.
The Freshwater Adventure: A Call to the Inland Anglers Not to be overshadowed, the freshwater realms of KZN hold their own allure, with Jan’s riveting report from the midlands and beyond painting a vivid picture of the riches lying inland. Carp, bass, trout, and the ever-elusive scaly fish tempt anglers to the tranquil waters of Albert Falls and the Umkomaas River, where skill and patience are rewarded with memorable catches.
From Shad to Kingfish The reports streaming in from various corners of KZN are testaments to the indigo patch's generosity. Whether it's the South Coast, teeming with life, or the promising waters of Richards Bay, every report brims with the thrill of the catch - from the surge of pompano to the sleek snook and the regal kingfish making appearances offshore and in the bays.
Offshore:
Couta has been the main target along the KZN coast with all the recent competitions. There have been some quality fish caught! Live bait remains the most successful of all the reported methods. Remember to fish a trap stick when you are catching bait as you never know what is lurking around the baitfish. The sharks have taken their "fair" share but some very impressive fish have been landed. There have been many bigger kingfish around this last week. These hard-fighting gamefish are great fun to catch and release. Unfortunately, they fight similarly to a shark so make sure you are certain you hooked a taxman before you break him off. Bigger mackerel and bonito are your best live bait for these gangsters.
Rock and surf:
The rock and surf fishing has shifted towards the winter edible season on the central and southern coasts while the north coast clings to the last of the summer inedibles. This past week saw some impressive fish caught up north. Most anglers fished for the last of the summer inedibles. There were some decent sandies and honeycombs caught and a few fish unable to be stopped. While targeting these fish, a few lucky anglers managed some massive giant kingfish. These fish are incredible and deserve a safe release (after some brag photos. Specifically targeting these big kingfish is difficult so well done to those that managed to land these beasts.
The Blue Lagoon area is still fishing well with multiple species being caught this past week. The kob and grunter have been the main targets while the stumpies and shad have played second fiddle. The beaches to the north have fished very well with big shoals of mullet keeping the kob fed and the imminent arrival of the garrick on everyone's mind.
Freshwater:
The freshwater anglers have had a good run this past week with some proper size bass being shown off on social media. The trout fishing is picking up and the carp anglers are doing well for themselves. The bass fishing has been amazing in all of the KZN venues. The faster-moving baits have been putting the numbers in the boat. Crankbaits, spinnerbaits and walking surface baits allow you to cover a lot more water. These faster techniques have allowed anglers to quickly up their numbers before switching to soft plastics to target the bigger fish. Carp fishing has been great for conventional anglers. Sweet-flavoured baits and a spray of almond on your mielie bomb will keep your drag running and keepnet full on most of the bigger dams. The farm dams and ponds have also produced some good fish this past week with the fruity scents as well as bread seeing the best results.
The Stillwaters are starting to set up for the spawn. -

It has been another bumper week of fishing in KZN. Anglers have experienced a variety of fish species, offering a mere taste of what's to come as we approach the end of summer. Edible bait is becoming more prevalent, while sharks are finally giving offshore anglers a fighting chance. As for freshwater, trout fishing appears to be hot this week.
Offshore:
The recent Couta Classic Fishing Tournament saw a lot of decent Couta caught, along with a mix of other gamefish.
Rock and surf:
Summer fishing is starting to give way to early winter. This means switching to smaller, more natural-looking bait rigs and focusing on bait presentation over size.
Freshwater:
The dams and rivers are fishing well. Bass are still the most popular catch, but trout are making their presence felt and carp anglers are having success as well.
