In this episode, part of a special collaboration between ACM ByteCast and the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA)’s For Your Informatics podcast, hosts Sabrina Hsueh and Adela Grando welcome Regina Barzilay, a School of Engineering Distinguished Professor of AI & Health in the Department of Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the AI Faculty Lead at MIT Jameel Clinic. She develops machine learning methods for drug discovery and clinical AI. In the past, she worked on natural language processing. Her research has been recognized with the MacArthur Fellowship, an NSF Career Award, and the AAAI Squirrel AI Award for Artificial Intelligence for the Benefit of Humanity. Regina is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Regina describes her career journey, and how a personal experience with the healthcare system led her to work on an AI-based system for the early detection—and prediction of—breast cancer. She explains why entering the interdisciplinary field of clinical AI is so challenging and offers valuable advice on how to overcome some of these challenges. Regina also opines on new models for using AI, including the promise of ChatGPT in healthcare. Finally, she talks about inequity in medicine, and offers actionable insights on how to mitigate these shortfalls while moving the field of clinical AI forward. -

She is Editor in Chief of the Journal of Biomedical Informatics and an international fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI). She received AMIA's New Investigator Award for work on the GLIF3 guideline modeling language. Mor is a renowned researcher in clinical guideline-based decision support.
Initially fascinated by biomedical engineering, Mor shares how she arrived at the intersection of information systems and medicine, after working in IT and completing her postdoctoral research at Stanford. She mentions her recent project, MobiGuide, which aims to narrow the gap between clinical guidance and patient needs by providing 24/7 decision support to patients and providers. With a current focus on improving the mental well-being of cancer patients through evidence-based practices such as exercise, yoga, and positive psychology. Mor also shares advice for people (especially women) looking to work in interdisciplinary fields. She emphasizes the importance of health equity and how AI can be employed in the service of detecting unfairness.

She enjoys skiing, mountain biking, cooking, and visiting dog parks and beaches with her two huskies. ACM-AMIA Joint Podcast Series is a joint effort of the Women in AMIA’s For Your Informatics (FYI) podcast and the ACM ByteCast, is a podcast series exploring the interdisciplinary field of medical informatics where both the practitioners of AI /ML solution builders and the stakeholders in the healthcare ecosystems take interest.
The two host professional societies, ACM’s practitioner's board and the Women in AMIA (WIA) steering committee, have extended the effort of the two successful flagship podcast series to start this new series. This series will be jointly hosted by Rashmi Mohan, Karmen Williams, Adela Grando, and Sabrina Hsueh, who will interview female leaders (researchers, practitioners, and innovators) who have first-hand experience enabling AI/ML in real-world applications in healthcare and life science. Special emphasis will be given to the guest’s career path in this highly interdisciplinary field and how each of them navigates and chooses their path and establishes their reputation within the field. We would also welcome the guest to discuss how she evaluates and governs their own AI applications and builds trust in their own field. In each bi-monthly episode, guests will share their experiences handling interdisciplinary communication and workforce equity issues, the lessons they’ve learned on their own career paths, and their own visions for the future of computing.

Dr. Nabukenya is an Associate Professor of Informatics and the former Dean of the School of Computing and Informatics Technology at Makerere University in Uganda. She founded and chairs the Health Informatics Research Group at the Makerere University to solve fundamental health challenges in Uganda, the African Region, and other low- and middle-income countries.
Dr. Aldekeyel is an Assistant Professor in health informatics at the College of Medicine, King Saud University in Saudi Arabia. She published this year a JAMIA paper on “What it means to be a woman in the field of biomedical informatics in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia”. She is a member of several committees to review health informatics standards and develop national-level training programs in Saudi Arabia.
