Matt Harward’s story is a bit of an anomaly. In spite of finding himself in the punk rock world at a young age, Matt never got involved in the drug or alcohol scene. Married at a young age, he did his best to provide for his wife and young son. Then anxiety set in and mix that with the counter culture popularity of his band, he found himself on his way to prison. Serving a 0 to 5 sentence, he describes some of the crazy parts of prison life. Soon, he finds himself in a privileged section and is introduced to Captain Your Story, the lifestyle model I have the privileged of guiding every Monday inside CUCF in Gunnison. Matt describes the positive effect it had on himself and the guys he lived with and how it continues to guide him and his family as he has gained parole and is living a good life. Listen in as he tells his story.

If I were to describe Justin Kruger, I would say he is, “the most interesting man in prison” and now on the streets. Arrested at 16 and incarcerated for over 20 years, his entire education was acquired by his own efforts on the inside. His young life turned to turmoil as his mother passed away when he was 14 and he was abandoned by his father. He quickly learned to adapt and survive. That skill followed him into prison. Articulate, thoughtful, well rounded, Justin lives a very productive life still solving problems for businesses. He has a unique and interesting story.

Morgan Dimmitt grew up in a fairly normal world. Though his parents were divorced, he felt cared for and nurtured. Finding his place on a football field, he was a standout on his high school football team, even headed for college. His life began to spiral soon becoming addicted to about every drug on the market. Listen in as he tells his near 20 year journey in the world of drugs and crime until one day, facing a long prison sentence, a judge gave him the break he needed and he, almost overnight, came to himself. Using the advice of his sponsor who tells him, “I don’t care about your feelings. Who are you helping today” and thanks to Alcoholics Anonymous he is 3 years sober. Listen in to hear him describe his journey from hell to heaven.

Imagine growing up in a life where, from your first memory, abuse was a daily part of life. Verbal, physical, sexual, drugs, alcohol. For Jennifer Granberg, it was a reality. Only her grandmother who was not a part of everyday life showed her any positive reinforcement. It’s hard to imagine the mental anguish that created in her. In fact it pushed her to points even she can’t believe. What is a true miracle is where she is now. It’s hard to imagine surviving what she experienced. It’s amazing to see how today she is thriving and sharing and helping as a counselor to other women who have been through it. Her story is so very sad and traumatic and at the same time, so powerful because of what she has overcome. Join me as Jennifer tells her story.

Jessica Grundie describes her young life as “typical to me”. It was however, anything but functional. Domestic violence, drugs and alcohol were all around her daily home life so much so that at 11, DCFS came knocking and she went to live with an Aunt and Uncle for a time. Rather than, as so many kids do, look to drugs and alcohol to hide her pain, she turned to anger. Fights and juvenile detention were a constant part of her young life until one day, at 15 years of age, while trying to escape from a detention facility, she stabs a worker. Sentenced to 5 years to life in the state prison, she sends her first 5 years in max; 23 hour lockdown. Her story is heartbreaking yet her outcome is glorious. Join me as she tells her story losing the anger and finding peace.
