  • Imagine growing up in a life where, from your first memory, abuse was a daily part of life. Verbal, physical, sexual, drugs, alcohol. For Jennifer Granberg, it was a reality. Only her grandmother who was not a part of everyday life showed her any positive reinforcement. It’s hard to imagine the mental anguish that created in her. In fact it pushed her to points even she can’t believe. What is a true miracle is where she is now. It’s hard to imagine surviving what she experienced. It’s amazing to see how today she is thriving and sharing and helping as a counselor to other women who have been through it. Her story is so very sad and traumatic and at the same time, so powerful because of what she has overcome. Join me as Jennifer tells her story.

  • Jessica Grundie describes her young life as “typical to me”. It was however, anything but functional. Domestic violence, drugs and alcohol were all around her daily home life so much so that at 11, DCFS came knocking and she went to live with an Aunt and Uncle for a time. Rather than, as so many kids do, look to drugs and alcohol to hide her pain, she turned to anger. Fights and juvenile detention were a constant part of her young life until one day, at 15 years of age, while trying to escape from a detention facility, she stabs a worker. Sentenced to 5 years to life in the state prison, she sends her first 5 years in max; 23 hour lockdown. Her story is heartbreaking yet her outcome is glorious. Join me as she tells her story losing the anger and finding peace.

Surrounded by disfunction during his entire young life he plunged into criminal behavior at an early age. It’s hard to believe that the man I interview is the same man from the first part of his story. Thanks to two separate experiences that brought him to himself and the sheer grit of self-determination mixed with a strong intellect, he has spent the last 11 years, helping others, both inside and outside of prison find their way and rebuild their lives. • Lisa Junior has lived a life few people can truly understand. Raised in a situation where unregulated emotions were the norm. Her life saw her abandoned and or betrayed by nearly every person who should have protected her, she suffered through sexual abuse to the point of eventually becoming a part of the “Adult Industry” world where she remained for nearly 2 decades. It is easy for us to judge a person like Lisa; that is until we hear her story, see what she has come through and how she has risen above and against all odds become the person she is today. Hers is an incredible story that you don’t want to miss.

  • Parley Dutson tells his story from inside the Central Utah Correctional Facility in Gunnison Utah. Thanks to the UDC for allowing us access to hear how Parley, and many others, are working to change their direction and perspective preparing them for the time they will be released. He was born and raised in a religious community called Colorado City. Finding himself an outcast, he discovered “the world”. Going from a strict religious world to the total freedoms of life didn’t work well for him. After two years of running and gunning, he committed a horrible act that was completely against his nature that sent him to prison for a very long time. He tells of the anguish he feels for what he did and how in spite of that, has found value in education and self-improvement. Currently serving as a mentor in the Captain Your Story lifestyle curriculum, Parley is a leader in the criminal Justice reform space having had the opportunity to testify virtually to the Utah State Legislature as well as meet with a state senator Derrin Ownes and executive director Brian Redd of the UDC. Parley’s emotion can easily be heard as he tells his heart wrenching story.

  • Ryan Springer is a story of coming full circle. His parents were school teachers and he lived in a white picket fence world. However, he was intrigued by the counter culture but in spite of his best efforts, he had a hard time getting there. After serving an LDS mission, he describes how while attending BYU he “lost his compass”. “Fell in love with Vodka”, his words, he dove head long into alcoholism. Listen in as he describes the depths of his misery and fall, losing his lawyer license, his multiple DUI’s and losing his family. Listen in as he describes his amazing recovery and his return to a healthy life, mostly thanks to a random connection to the Captain Your Story model and applying it to his life.

  • Brandon Nelson’s story comes from inside the Central Utah Correctional Faacility in Gunnison Utah. Thanks to the UDS for allowing us access to the facility. Brandon he relates the good, the bad and the ugly of prison life. He talks about how, after 7 years of living the cesspool of prison politics, he came to realize that he could do and be better. How he became an integral part of UPrep, a grassroots postsecondary education program started by inmates for inmates rising to be the leader in that life changing program. Later, he tells of a curriculum called Captain Your Story, a lifestyle that has allowed him, in spite of still being incarcerated, to become free and envision and create a life now, on the inside that is truly preparing him for when he hits the streets. Though still incarcerated, he lives a productive life mentoring and helping other inmates who seek the same change and growth he has found.
