Exorcism at 1600 Penn, out Oct 16. Art by Vanesa R. Del Rey

Hannah Rose May, thank you for joining us on the AIPT comics podcast! To start, we’ve read the ashcan for Exorcism at 1600 Penn, and it’s primed for the election this year. How long have you been working on this project and was it always intended to launch near election time? The Ashcan reveals a complex family in the white house, with Kelly Doyle taking on the presidency with her family joining her, was it always intended to be an ensemble story?Vanesa Del Rey blew me away with Redlands, what made her the right fit for this project? For fans of Rogues Gallery, what does Exorcism at 1600 Penn offer them?I really love the title! Were there other options before getting nixed? What kind of research did you do into politics? When you write dialogue, do you find yourself speaking aloud to get a feel for each character? This story feels like someone getting out some existential fears. Did you find writing this to be therapeutic at all?Jock’s variant cover for this is so haunting. What kind of prompt or resources does a variant cover artist get before diving in?Declan Shalvey co-wrote the story with you on Rogues Gallery, which got me thinking, now he’s super steeped into the Alien universe, soon the Terminator universe, any desire to jump in with him for a licensed book like that?If Exorcism at 1600 Penn was a song, what would it be and why?Down with the Sickness - DisturbedWhat comics are you reading now?Batgirl #359 (Detective Comics #359)Catwoman first appearanceBanshee - firstWhite Queen

Interview: Pornsak Pichetshote/The Horizon Experiment - The Horizon Experiment: The Manchurian #1 - FOC September 2nd; September 25, 2024

It’s always exciting to have you on Pornsak, but even more so when there’s something new going on in comics we haven’t seen before. Can you tell our listeners what the Horizon Experiment is all about? We understand it started over the debate of Idris Elba as James Bond. Tell us a bit about that.
    - Do you feel that dream movie would still disappoint? Is it inherently impossible for an established IP to take those kind of risks?Something interesting about this project is the notion that it’s “designed to act as pilots for follow-up books if sales merit.” Do you have a number in mind for a series to flourish from a one-shot, and if one of the one-shots does merit a series how will you let fans know?Tell us about your collaboration process with co-editor Will Dennis. Were there any pitches you got but they didn’t make the cut for this first five?Tell us about working with the Dodsons and Jeff Powell on The Manchurian. We’d be remiss not to ask about Absolute Power Task Force VII #4, with a focus on Batman super robot Failsafe! This series has a different creative team each issue, and you’re teaming with Claire Roe on this one, was DC actively accepting pitches for this or did it come about organically?Anything else you’d like to plug today?

Juni Ba, you’re known for so much incredible work, from Monkey Meat, to The Unlikely Story of Felix and Macabber, to The Boy Wonder, incredible cover art, and now TMNT Nightwatcher…thank you for guesting on the AIPT comics podcast! To start, you’ve been building up a nice resume of TMNT work from covers to Armageddon game, the annual issue in 2022… what made TMNT Nightwatcher the right project to launch with IDW?With a few issues under your belt I’m sure, how has it been working with Fero Pe?If you had a mutation, what animal would you want to be?I got a Dark Knight Returns vibe from the first issue, possibly due to the check-in with residents. Did you have any inspirations when scripting this series? When writing a vigilante hero, are you looking to capture a certain level of brutality vs heroism?Speaking of vigilantes, how would you say Nightwatcher and The Boy Wonder are different or the same?Monkey Meat, might we see more of that series? It’d be crime not to mention the incredible The Unlikely Story of Felix and Macabber, which your collaborator on that Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou just won an Eisner! Could you tell TMNT or Robin fans why they must pick this one up?Do you find there’s a discovery of characters even when you have a plan? Jordan Morris, thank you for being our guest on the AIPT Comics podcast for the second time!Thank you for continuing the tradition of appearing on our show the day after a Doughboys appearance! Tell our listeners, why’s Youth Group so awesome?Specter Inspectors is one of my favorite comics from the last few years. How’d you link up with Bowen McCurdy?Did you ever do youth ministry? This felt so specific in so many ways. One of the things I love is that this book embraces the idea that there’s no wrong way to embrace spirituality. Was that an important message for you? And how long did it take to come to that, if I can get a little personal? There’s specific Christian and Wiccann weaponry introduced. How’d you come about these and was there anything left on the cutting room floor? Do you have spreadsheets for the rules?A lot of these characters feel deeply realized. Were any based on people you or Bowen McCurdy knew growing up?For a deeply Christian person nervous about picking up Youth Group, how might you pitch this book to them? What contemporary pop songs would be converted into Christian anthems if this book were set today?I feel like some of the characters are learning to ask questions for the first time, and it’s difficult. Was this always a part of the story from the beginning, or something you found as you built out these characters? What comics are you reading currently?

Kyle Higgens, thanks you for joining us on the AIPT Comics podcast! C.O.W.L. was your firs creator-owned at Image, but since that launched you’ve got the Massive-verse roaring, how have you changed working on projects since C.O.W.L. was first launched? Its been 9 years since you’ve explored the world of COWL with Alec Siegel and Rod Reis, why was now the right time to launch COWL 1964?I feel like COWL is a compelling look at the politics of superheroes, under the guise of the 60s, have the current politics of today influenced this upcoming series?Back when COWL vol. 1 came out Entertainment Weekly said it was “"Mad Men meets Heroes in '60s Chicago." With those references dated and COWL 1964 a different project, how might you describe the upcoming series using TV references? For a reader who may think the 60s isn’t their bag, how might you pitch COWL 1964 to them? You’ve collaborated with a lot of great writers and artists, including Mat Groom, Joe Clark and now Bear McCreary & Kid Cudi. Any tips for working with a co-writer?I know you love to play around with different media formats for the Massiveverse, and that's continuing with the audiobook version of Radiant Black. What made an audiobook the best format?

Interview: Gillen Caspar - The Power Fantasy

There’s a lot of moving parts to The Power Fantasy, when did the bud of the story come to you and what was that bud? You’re both no slouches in creating worlds and characters whole cloth, do you find there’s a good method to the madness, or is it truly chaotic in creating a world, characters, plot etc?I understand The first extranormal individuals appeared in 1945, was this a choice so the new world history was post WW2, or does WW2 have some significance on the story? Caspar your work is incredible on this first issue. Is there a character that was your favorite to design? The idea of ethics is a strong theme after reading the first issue, did you find yourselves poking in old books on ethics and philosophy when delving into the points of view of these characters? If you could have a superpower of one of the characters in this book, what would it be and why?If The Power Fantasy was a song what would it be and why?Prince 1999; I understand Rian Hughes is involved with art as well, making each issue a more complex beast. Would you call his inclusion part of a “data pages” approach? Peter Cannon was a masterwork in my opinion, and also a great meta narrative on comics. Are you continuing that trend or other themes with the power fantasy?

    Interview - Mark Waid

What was the original pitch for Absolute Power? With so many books with Dan Mora, do you both have a shorthand at this point? Can anyone get behind Waller’s actions after all that she’s done in recent years and now this? How do you navigate not making her too one-dimensional?When writing a character like Waller, is there a certain headspace you need to be in?Given Green Arrow seemingly edging towards agreeing with Waller, might we assume not every hero is on her hit list?Could one assume this is all leading toward ALL heroes going into hiding, or at least never being trusted by the public again? With so many characters involved in this event, and so many locations across the globe, do you or someone else have a giant Risk game board out trying to keep track of things? After headlining the Lazarus Planet event, how would you say headlining Absolute Power is different?Wants an airwave action figureIf Absolute Power was a song what would it be and why? You’ve worked with a ton of talented artists, maybe nearly every one that can come to mind, do you have a mount rushmore of artists you’d love to work with again? If there was such a thing as the Mark Waid guarantee, what would you stamp on the cover guaranteed for anyone on the fence about Absolute Power?

Kelly it’s such a pleasure to have you on the AIPT comics podcast for the second time! Congratulations on the Eisner nominations, what a year you’ve had. We’ve loved your work on Cull, Birds of Prey, and It’s Jeff, and now you’ve set your sites on Powerpuff Girls! Can you tell us how long you’ve been working on the project, and how it came to be?Based on Paulina’s work, I have to say she’s an inspired pick for a series like this. Have you had a chance to check out any art yet?Powerpuff Girls has such an eclectic rogues gallery, any favorite villains in the bunch? Any favorite villains you thought were underutilized? Maskara?Last time you were on the podcast you mentioned you keep a notebook to jot down dialogue for characters, have you been adding to a Powerpuff Girl section and is there a specific character that you’ve grown to love writing the most?If your first story arc of Powerpuff Girls was a song, what would it be and why?Best Coast - I love it Icona Pop, Call me Maybe, Cruel SummerBy the time this airs, Scarlet is out, but we haven’t had the pleasure of digging in yet, can you talk a little bit about how it fits within the Energon universe? If the Powerpuff Girls are made of “sugar, spice, and everything nice,” what is Scarlet made of?In press materials, you’ve mentioned Scarlett and Powerpuff as important to you when you were younger, what’s left for you to tackle in the comics realm?Birds of Prey #12 reunites you with Sophie Campbell! What can we expect from this issue and how’d it feel getting the band back together?34I’m a huge Marvel Snap fanatic and I know you play…Kelly what deck are you running these days? What else do you have to plug today? The Cull and Black Cloak are both coming back, yes?

Deniz, thank you for being our guest on the AIPT Comics podcast! To start, this episode will air just a few days before Ultimates #1 comes out, how excited are you to see fan reactions? Can you talk a little bit about how you snagged the writing gig for Ultimates? By all accounts this seems like the most important book as far as worldbuilding is concerned. With a few scripts under your belt, is there a specific Ultimate/Avenger you enjoy writing the most? Were you a fan of the original Ultimates and the line at the time? The FCBD story you wrote gives us a lot of hints as to the whereabouts of heroes, I was curious, how much of those required Wil Moss to check as far as green lighting things, or do you have full reign to erase or delete a character from this timeline?Pie in the sky, is there a character that floats to the top you’re excited to dig into, and if it’s a spoiler, can you give a hint as to who they might be? 19:0020:26Juan Frigeri is no slouch when it comes to big superhero action, was there a panel or page he blew you away with, so far?I was a big fan of your Children of the Vault miniseries, which frankly had some mind bending ideas at work. Did writing that help you gear up for Ultimates in any way?Does the Ultimate Universe office have a slack going? Are you all digging into each others scripts and keeping tabs?At this point 20th Century Men is iconic in a lot of ways, for fans of Ultimates, why should they check it out?

Tom, thanks for chatting with me on the AIPT Comics podcast. You’ve mentioned Diana is a warrior for peace and thus every fight is a lost one, and now shes’ Sovereign’s captive and not fighting at all, how have you taken this warrior of peace to a different level with this setup? What drew you to the “no thank you” line, it’s like Wonder Woman’s catchphrase in your run!Issue #9 has a few key locations, one of which is clearly Barcelona, and another is like a great Gatsby party. How much thought went into each location?Daniel Sampere has made me utter “wow” more than a few times, is there a specific wow moment that’s your favorite by him so far?In a key moment in issue 9 Diana talks about westerns, what is it about the western that Diana loves particularly?Trinity has slowly grown up in the backup stories, will you be continuing these backups for the foreseeable future? How much longer until we get to know more about this character? With 9 issues under your belt as of May 21st, has your run stayed the course from your original pitch or taken any surprising turns or tweaks? The series has gone its own course so far, but will be tying into Absolute Power in July, were there any challenges in shifting gears with the event?

Interview: Mark Russell - Death Ratio’d (Artist Vladimir Krstić aka Laci) out May 29

DEATH RATIO’D is a one-shot story where social media rules life and death. The horror-comedy tells a fast-paced, cautionary tale about systems designed to control expression and behavior and explores how society organizes itself when ratings affect your day-to-day life. With humor, horror, and the repercussions of nonexistent humanity, DEATH RATIO’D offers readers a fresh look at how today’s social practices can be pushed to the extreme and do anything but bring the world closer together.

Mark Russell, thanks for joining us on the AIPT Comics podcast for the second time! To start, Death Ratio’d…man this is a work of genius. Where did you start with this scary look at a social media nightmare future? How do you personally feel about social media?Do you feel like this is where we’re heading? Laci’s art reminds me of Steve Pugh’s in a way, which makes me wonder, do you look for a certain kind of art style when you have the chance to find a collaborator? What do the sight gags - giant carrot, Fruit Coffin - look like in the script? Is there a theme or question you keep coming back to in your work? Why?If Death Ratio’d were a song, what would it be and why?Elliot SmithBatman: Dark Age has launched, your follow up so to speak to Superman: Space Age, how would you say these two titles are similar, how are they different? Was it daunting recontextualizing and rejiggering Batman’s origin?Mike Allred…thoughts?Marvel listed FF: Life Story to prepare for the new MCU FF movie, any thoughts on what they might be pulling from your work?Speaking of Marvel, you’re writing a story in Blood Hunters, what can we expect?
