Oftentimes the best adventures are not in the most well-known places or in the most dramatic of sceneries. Hidden gems of adventure are all around us. In fact, as we say on this show, adventure is anywhere you are.
Alexandre had his sights set on Turkey, a country he had longed to visit. Little did he know, the adjacent and lesser-traveled country of Georgia would quickly become one of his favorite places in his more than seven-year full-time travel adventure.

Renata is a legendary Czech-born adventurer and mountaineer. She was the first Swedish and Czech woman to climb Mount Everest and was listed in Outside Magazine as one of the world’s “25 adventure goddesses."
In 2005, after the death of her partner, Göran Kropp (also a well-known adventurer), she embarked on what she calls the "Around America Adventure". She would circumnavigate the lower 48 US states by bike and kayak. When biking, she would pull her kayak behind her with a set of two wheels and while kayaking, she would ship her bike ahead of her at the next portion of the trip.
She started in Seattle and paddled to San Diego, bicycled San Diego to Brownsville, Texas, continued kayaking around Florida to Eastport, Maine, and then bicycled back to Seattle across the northern portion of the US. Through this experience she became the first person to circumnavigate the US this way. This is a wild, unique, and beautiful story of what a true adventure really means.

You might not think of Alabama as holding many records in the world of endurance races (at least I didn’t), however, you’d be wrong! Alabama is home to the Great Alabama 650, a 650-mile paddle race down the Alabama Scenic River Trail going from the northern part of the state out to the Gulf of Mexico. Racers face whitewater, battle tidewater currents, and hike around a dozen dams in an effort to reach the ocean and are expected to finish between 7-10 days.
Today we’re talking with the AL650 race director, Greg Wingo to learn just how challenging a race like this is to plan as well as compete in.
Also, Adventure Sports Podcast is now a sponsor of Greg’s other race, Last Paddler Standing. Mason will be commentating during the LPS in December.

In 2016 she became the first woman and youngest person to run self-supported around the coast of the UK – an adventure she was completely unqualified for, as an unexperienced runner whose athletic career consisted of one horrendous marathon dressed as a Crayola crayon. She is the author of best-selling book Coasting, which tells the story of her adventure and aims to show others that you don’t need to be the best at something to achieve something big. Although this episode was going to be about fly fishing basics, Dave is a podcaster, so we ended up talking quite a bit about his show, Wet Fly Swing, and not so much about fly fishing itself.
However, it’s a great conversation and I really enjoyed getting to know Dave. I hope you enjoy it too!

"Alpine Rising is a fascinating history of the crucial and frequently tragic role of local Nepalis, Tibetans, and Pakistanis on mountaineering expeditions to the world’s highest peaks."-- Jon Krakauer
The name of Maurice Herzog, the first man to reach the summit of Annapurna, is widely recognized, but how many know Ang Tharkay, the Sherpa who carried the seriously frostbitten Herzog on his back for miles? Although rarely mentioned in published accounts of early expeditions, local climbers have long been significant members of first ascents on the world’s tallest and most challenging peaks. In Alpine Rising, award-winning writer Bernadette McDonald sets the record straight by shining a light on these too often forgotten heroes.
Now, in the 21st century, it is often local climbers who are setting records. A Nepali team was the first to climb K2 in winter; they reached the summit while singing their national anthem. Pakistani climbers like Little Karim and Ali Sadpara devoted their lives to helping others survive and succeed on and off the mountains and their stories deserve to be more widely known. Not only a timely reminder of the need to recognize the contributions of local climbers and the importance of correcting the historical record, Alpine Rising is a celebration of a region’s local heroes.
Sales benefit the Khumbu Climbing Center (Nepal) and the ASCEND climbing program for girls (Pakistan)
Bernadette McDonald has authored twelve books and has won numerous awards, including two Boardman Tasker Prizes, the Banff Mountain Book Festival Grand Prize, Italy’s ITAS Prize, and India’s Kekoo Naoroji Award. In 2011 the American Alpine Club awarded her their highest literary honour for excellence in mountain literature.
Bernadette was the founding Vice President of Mountain Culture at The Banff Centre and director of the Banff Mountain Festivals for 20 years. She received the Alberta Order of Excellence in 2010, is an honorary member of the Himalayan Club and the Polish Mountaineering Association, and is a Fellow of the Explorers Club.
When not writing, Bernadette climbs, hikes, skis, paddles and grows grapes.

Patrick and Michael have been living with Type 1 Diabetes for most of their lives. Feeling a bit isolated and hesitant as children to venture too far away from available insulin or glucose monitoring tools, they individually pursuit adventurous lives before coming together to show the world anything is possible with T1D through their latest adventure, Project 50-IN-50
They climbed the 50 highpoints of each U.S. state and finished in 49 days – making them the first people with Type 1 diabetes to complete this achievement and joining an elite group of fewer than five people to do so the fastest in the world.
Over the course of the 2019 summer, the team road-tripped over 17,000 miles to hike, run, climb and ski through 315 miles of trails. Patrick is the first person with T1D to successfully summit the highest peak in each of the 50 states. Michael experienced an emergency Life Flight off of Granite Peak in Montana and had to miss out on a handful of the peaks. Thankfully, he’s made a full recovery. After loads of tears and challenges along the way, Patrick and Michael persevered to complete their challenge.
Project 50-IN-50 is an initiative of The Diabetes Family Connection, a North Carolina based 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. In addition to achieving a new milestone in mountaineering, Michael and Patrick have grown local and global communities of people with diabetes inspired to get outside and enjoy the outdoors.

Dion Leonard's lifestyle was killing him. Weighing 250 pounds; Dion’s uncontrollable eating habits, heavy smoking and excessive drinking to hide the demons from his abusive and turbulent childhood were leading him to an early grave.
Dion’s iron will and innate ability to survive led him to become one of the worlds top ultra runners competing in some of the toughest and most extreme ultra challenges across the planets most inhospitable locations. One act of kindness would change Dion’s life forever during an endurance race in the Chinese Gobi Desert when a stray dog ran with him, forming an unbreakable bond that would become the ultimate challenge of overcoming adversity to achieve the unachievable.

If you listen to this show, you know that adventure doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Today we’re talking with Jude Kneller who decided to bike across the USA on a $75 bicycle. On top of that, Jude was 19 when he did the journey alone. Pretty young for such a big trip!
I hope you’re inspired by his stories and motivated to plan your own adventure of a lifetime!

Sunny is the first woman to complete the 1,000-mile Iditarod Trail Invitational on cross-country skis - but she is not a skier. A Harvard MBA and hard-charging strategy consultant in her twenties, Sunny turned her back on material possessions at age 30 in order to live in an Astrovan so she could run and climb full-time instead.
Sunny's overarching passion is to be active and push her limits in the side- and backcountry, spanning a multitude of sports from big-wall climbs over multi-day paddling trips to 100 milers and everything in between, including 1000 mile cross country ski races, though her specialty is the high altitude endurance realm; she holds speed records on Aconcagua and on the Annapurna Circuit and has excelled on high trails in the Colorado Rockies.

Soon after turning 30, Ray, a self-described “two pack a day smoker”, was tired of the direction his life was heading. His younger brother, who was pursuing a healthier lifestyle, was his inspiration to make a change.
Ray quickly set his eyes to try to complete a 100-mile ultramarathon. He won.
Within the next few years he put his life on a trajectory of adventures and purpose, combining feats as large as running across the Sahara Desert and taking scores of young adults on adventures through founding impossible2possible.com, an organization that aims to inspire and educate youth through adventure learning, inclusion, and participation in expeditions.

On May 21st, 2024, in Acadia National Park, Spencer became the first person to complete a trip to all the national parks in the lower forty-eight states…by bicycle. It took 13 months, 18,000 miles, and a whopping 28 flat tires.
In preparation for this bicycle trip, Spencer moved into a van, cut the expenses of his life down to save money so he could take this time off. This bike trip was only the beginning of a larger advocacy project. Spencer’s goal is to make sure that if you hike or bike into a federally
managed campground, there will always be a cheap place for you to stay. This will provide the necessary support for people who are recreating without a car and offer an incentive to others to leave their car at home.
When not on the move, Spencer is heavily involved in community organizing and advocacy work. In 2020 he wrote and passed a ballot initiative in Denver County regarding Internet access and has spent countless hours helping move the needle on walking, biking, and bus infrastructure in Denver.

Hey folks! Today I’m (Mason, the host of Adventure Sports Podcast) getting interviewed! I was recently on For the Love Of to talk about my “career” in the outdoor/adventure industry and some of the tradeoffs, evolutions, and mishaps that have been made along the way.
Angie and Jeni were so wonderful to talk with. They asked amazing questions and I told a bunch of stories I haven’t thought about in years.
I love the premise of their show. Please be sure to check out the other interviews as it’s a perspective you won’t find anywhere else with adventure athletes.
