  • "Catch You On The Flip Side" - Podcast with Tim Millikin

Tim Millikin set out in May 2015 to cycle from Jacksons Corner in Reading to Reading, USA. The three-year trip took him 46500 kilometres through 39 countries. On his trip he discovered that “the world is a really friendly place”.

Tim talks about the highs and lows, literally and metaphorically, of his adventure. As he set out across Europe leaving familiarity behind and traversed eastern Europe, he learnt how to accept the hospitality of the people he met en route who invited him into their homes to share meals and their celebrations.

After cycling through the mountains of Kyrgyzstan and across China he turned south to Vietnam and south east Asia. From Cambodia he sent the Whitley Pump a photograph of a village pump.

From Singapore he flew to Australia where he cycled across the red centre and continued his trip to New Zealand.

Following a break in New Zealand he flew to Ushaia on the southerly tip of Argentina to be greeted by the strong winds of Patagonia. In the Atacama Desert of Chile, he did not meet or speak to another soul for six days. That is, until he came to a police post where he paused to cook the last of his supplies and was presented with the “best cheese sandwich he had ever tasted” by the officer on duty.

Then it was onwards and upwards north to central America. In El Salvador he was hit by a pickup and cracked his head open. He ended up in hospital for 11 days and his bike frame was broken.

After he and his bicycle were repaired the journey continued through the USA to Reading, Pennsylvania and the finish line at the Pagoda on Mount Penn and an emotional reunion with his parents.

Before the trip Tim Millikin worked in a travel agent in Reading, but now works in outdoor activities. He has contributed to a book ‘The Bigger Book of Yes and has realised a book of his 3-year cycle named “Reading to Reading: A Bicycle Journey Around the World”.

  • "Catch You On The Flip Side" - Podcast with Mark Smith

Mark had been in the army for eight years when the accident happened in 2011. He was overseeing training for a regiment on how to clear buildings in a temporary training compound made of wood.

Shots were fired towards a wall Mark was standing behind and he was hit six times in his right leg and once in his arm.

While he was being airlifted to hospital Mark flatlined several times, the longest flatline lasted for five minutes.

He made it to a hospital in Calgary, Canada, where his leg was amputated above the knees two days after the incident.

After two weeks in the Canadian hospital he was taken to a military hospital in Birmingham where was surrounded by people who helped him to refocus.

With his military career over Mark became a personal trainer, but soon realised that he needed something that was going to challenge him physically and mentally.

He soon took up body building and relished the competitive nature of the sport.

While he enjoyed bodybuilding he soon decided to push his limits even further and set himself the goal of becoming Britain's strongest disabled man, a title he eventually won twice.

After his accident Mark lost a lot of weight, dropping down to just 61 kilograms. While training for strongman competitions he weighed 120 kilograms, far more than he had ever weighed even before losing a limb.

But this came with some problems, the weight he put on while he was competing put too much strain on his leg and by 2018 it made it hard to walk.

Mark had also become very close with one of the men who saved his life in 2011, but sadly he took his own life in 2016. The impact of this loss was also weighing heavily on him.

When all of this came to the surface Mark reached out to someone in his regiment for help and credits counselling sessions with helping him to rebuild his mental health.

Mark has noticed a big change in the attitude towards mental health amongst soldiers and veterans.

Mark also plays amputee football and has represented both Peterborough United and West Bromwich Albion.

At first this was a learning curve, but he soon realised he was good at it and was voted player of the season in his first season.

  • "Catch You On The Flip Side" - Podcast with Katy Parrott

KATY found her passion for adventure at a young age and when she was 17 went on an expedition to Nepal. Her love of nature and the outdoors led her to gain a First in Biology from the University of Bath and a Masters for which she had to make a video out in the wilds of Bulgaria.

She was a ‘recruit’ in the BBC programme Special Forces: Ultimate Hell Week, which she was selected for out of thousands of applicants and made it to the final six in the show. It was an experience she found ‘life-changing’ and one that has inspired her to train to become an Army medic.

  • "Catch You On The Flip Side" - Podcast with Eskil Berger

The infantrymen of the Charlie Company were front unit deep inside the barren plains of Afghanistan in the humid Green Zone of Helmand province. They were the boys from C-COY, called "Crazy Coy", known for a different and offensive approach to their task solution. In the explosive and Taliban-infected area of responsibility, they showed a willingness to attack, which even the rebel army had to acknowledge.

Major Eskil Berger was the uncompromising commander of the 159 young soldiers from the Life Guards during their mission in 2010-2011. His order was to hold the "Patrol Base Line". Then it was up to Crazy Coy to find a workable and safe solution in daily battles against some of the world's best guerrilla fighters. Under extreme pressure, with the loss of brothers-in-arms and under constant fear of harming civilians, they created a fraternity that lasted long after Helmand. Other tangible and dangerous opponents found Crazy Coy in the form of the Armed Forces' political minefield, the Armed Forces' Audit Corps and the press' eternal longing for the "good" story. A fight that ended with Major Berger as the accused in a court-martial case, which in the press was called the "Stupid Fine Case".

The book will be available in English by 2022 hopefully.

  • "Catch You On The Flip Side" - Podcast with Rob Jones

Rob joined the Marine Corps Reserve as a combat engineer at Bravo Company, 4th Combat Engineer Battalion in Roanoke, VA. In the Marine Corps, combat engineers are responsible for a multitude of disciplines but the primary role that him and his fellow combat engineers undertook was the use of explosives, and the detection of buried IEDs and weapons caches.

Rob deployed to Habbaniyah, Iraq in 2008, and again to Delaram/Sangin, Afghanistan in 2010. During his deployment to Afghanistan while operating as a part of a push into Taliban territory, he was tasked with clearing an area with a high likelihood of containing an IED. It was in this capacity that he was wounded in action by a land mine. The injury resulted in a left knee dis-articulation and a right above knee amputation of my legs.

He was taken to National Naval Medical Centre in Bethesda, MD for the initial phases of his recovery, which consisted primarily of healing and closing my wounds. He was then transferred to Walter Reed Army Medical Centre for the remainder of his rehabilitation. At Walter Reed he was fitted with prosthetics and worked very hard to learn how to walk with two bionic knees. he also used the time to relearn how to do other things with his new challenge including riding a bicycle, running, and rowing. Rob took naturally to rowing, and since he was always in search of a challenge that he can use to become better, Rob decided to train for the 2012 Paralympics.

After being honourably discharged from the Marine Corps in December 2011, he immediately moved to Florida to train with his rowing partner, Oksana. He then moved to Charlottesville, Virginia to continue training until the Paralympics in September 2012. The hard work paid off for them as they brought home a bronze medal in the event. Rob continued in the sport of rowing through the 2013 season, where his partner and Rob placed 4th in the 2013 World Rowing Championships.

On October 14, 2013 he began a solo supported bike ride across America which started in Bar Harbour, Maine, and ended in Camp Pendleton, California.  The ride was 5,180 miles long and completed on April 13, 2014, a total of 181 days after it began.  Over the course of the ride, along with his team, he raised $126,000 for three charities which aid wounded veterans.

In the fall of 2017, with the support of an incredible team, Rob accomplished my goal to run 31 marathons in 31 days in 31 different cities.  Beginning on Oct 12 in London, England and finishing on Nov 11 in Washington, DC, Rob ran 26.2 miles for 31 consecutive days in 31 major cities in the UK, Canada, and USA.  In conjunction with this, his team raised over $200,000.

  • "Catch You On The Flip Side" - Podcast with James Ketchell

It was an inauspicious start for James; in 2008 he was recovering from a serious motorcycle accident that had left him with broken legs and a severely broken and dislocated ankle. The prognosis was that he would likely suffer a permanent walking impairment and would certainly not be able to continue the active physical lifestyle he had so enjoyed.

Not all James adventures have been easy! He survived two mid ocean rescues and on one he found himself clinging to a rope ladder on the side of a 100,000-tonne oil tanker as he climbed to safety in storm force winds in the Indian Ocean. No stranger to overcoming adversity and dealing with obstacles, James’ lectures include the importance of risk management, personal resilience and dealing with setbacks.

Having spent much of his teenage years struggling with no ambition and very little confidence, leaving school with no qualifications and spending most of his early days in bed. James has spent the last ten years passionately working to inspire young people, as well as sharing his lessons learned with companies around the world.

James Ketchell is the first and only person to have rowed across the Atlantic Ocean, successfully summited Mount Everest and cycled 18,000 miles around the world, in what the media dubbed ‘The Ultimate Triathlon’.

In 2019 he flew his open-cockpit gyroplane over 24,000 nautical miles around the world, in 175 days to set the first Fédération Aéronautique Internationale ratified circumnavigation for an aircraft of its type.

The mission was to inspire a million young people in classrooms over the world to pursue their own dreams and goals.

  • "Catch You On The Flip Side" - Podcast with Danny Bent

Danny is a regular guy with a highly irregular passion for life and humanity. His energy and stories light up a room. His unbridled energy has led to him representing Great Britain at Triathlon, raising over $500,000 for charity, cycling from London to India, being a finalist on BBC’s Ultimate Hell Week, writing a bestselling book and creating radically inclusive communities wherever he goes. His adventures will shock you to the core, but his softness and relate-ability will envelop you and inspire you to do more, give more and live more.

Danny’s talks have been celebrated the world over from Nike to Google and from HSBC to Twitter.

Danny is available for keynote speeches, employee motivation, wellness weeks, team building and ‘Be You’, play workshops. Danny talks on topics from ‘Happiness of being you’ to ‘Not your usual leadership ‘to ‘Are you sitting comfortably?’ Each talk comes with lessons for life and business and a good dollop of self-depreciating humour.

Danny also runs staff development weekends in a beautiful setting in the peak district.
