  • Allen Lewis, MD is the founder of Sancta Familia Center for Integrative Medicine. He is recognized as a leading physician in his field focused on helping patients achieve optimal wellness utilizing integrative and functional medicine to restore health to the mind, body, and spirit.

He specializes in treating children and adults with learning, mood, developmental, behavioral, and immune disorders, including autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, PANS/PANDAS and Lyme Disease. In addition, he treats patients with stress and anxiety disorders and gastrointestinal issues.

His medical career was directed down a different path when his child was diagnosed with autism at age two. Without a functional framework in traditional medicine for treatment of his child’s autism and associated medical problems, Dr. Lewis began to explore integrative, holistic, and functional medicine therapies. Dietary intervention, targeted nutrient supplementation, and approaching treatment with a more integrative/functional framework proved to be effective in helping his child, as well as many of his patients. In response to seeing such profound effects with these treatments, Dr. Lewis continued to explore other integrative medicine modalities and was certified by the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine. He serves on the Scientific Advisory Board of Advanced Brain Technologies and incorporates The Listening Program® in his practice as one of his therapeutic modalities.

Listen to this inspiring episode as Alex and Allen share a deeply personal conversation, that will provide hope and guidance to families impacted by the wide range of medical conditions he treats in his practice. Together they discuss family, functional integrative medicine, stress, autism, patient stories, and how to heal the brain.

  • Renowned neurologist and author of the New York Times #1 Best Selling Grain Brain, David Perlmutter, MD, returns to the Advanced Brain Podcast and uncovers the powerful role of gut bacteria in determining your brain’s destiny. Debilitating brain disorders are on the rise - from children diagnosed with autism and ADHD to adults developing dementia at younger ages than ever before. But a medical revolution is underway that can solve this problem. Brain Maker opens the door to unprecedented brain health potential.

Astonishing new research is revealing that the health of your brain is, to an extraordinary degree, dictated by the state of your microbiome – the vast population of organisms that live in your body and outnumber your own cells ten to one. What’s taking place in your intestines today is determining your risk for any number of brain-related conditions.

In his bestselling book Brain Maker, Dr. Perlmutter uncovers the powerful role of gut bacteria in determining your brain’s destiny. He explains the potent interplay between intestinal microbes and the brain, describing how the microbiome develops from birth and evolves based on lifestyle choices, how it can become “sick,” and how nurturing gut health through a few easy strategies can alter your brain’s destiny for the better. With simple dietary recommendations and a highly practical program of six steps to improving gut ecology, Brain Maker opens the door to unprecedented brain health potential.

Join host Alex Doman and his featured guest David Perlmutter as he returns to the Advanced Brain Podcast to discuss Brain Maker, brain disorders, and how to open the door to brain health.

  • Seth Horowitz, PhD., neuroscientist and author of The Universal Sense: How Hearing Shapes the Mind, sits down with Alex to discuss how we are all embedded in an unending ocean of sound, a rich stream of information that can be important, trivial, distracting or even dangerous. 350 million years of evolution has led us to develop an intimate relationship with sound that lets our brains sense, perceive and decide in which of categories a sound falls, all in less than a tenth of the time it takes us to see something. This is why hearing underlies some of the most complex cognitive and behavioral processes that we do, and why it provides a powerful, yet frequently ignored, tool for changing those processes.

In this episode listen and discover:

In evolutionary terms, hearing is a universal sense – there are no normally deaf vertebrates. It is highly adaptive to hear because sound lets you usefully detect what is going on at great distances even out of line of sight. Hearing is a mechanical sense – it has the fewest processes between the sensation and the perception. Hearing is the fastest sense; understanding it gives you a sense of the math behind the mind. How working with sound lets us act on with specific elements and processes of the brain and mind, much more so than any other sense.

  • Beatie Wolfe has beamed her music into space, been designated a UN role model for innovation, done groundbreaking research on the power of music for people with dementia, created the world’s first live 360 AR ‘anti-stream’ from the quietest room on earth, and is the subject of new documentary commissioned by the Barbican directed by Ross Harris.

Beatie Wolfe is an Anglo-American singer songwriter with an acoustic indie rock sound. Described by GQ as "smoky captivating melodies” and by Highsnobiety as “timeless romantic song-craft, Wolfe's music pulls from the brooding poeticism of Leonard Cohen, the tender haunting melodies of Elliott Smith and often veers into Americana territory.” Wolfe's live show has been hailed as "breathtaking" (The New York Times) and “a profound delivery of depth and soul” (BBC)

Named by WIRED Magazine as one of "22 people changing the world,” Beatie Wolfe is at the forefront of pioneering new formats for music, which reunite tangibility, storytelling and ceremony to the album in this digital age. In this vein, Wolfe has created a series of world’s-first designs that bridge the physical and digital, including: a 3D vinyl for the palm of your hand; an intelligent album deck of cards; a wearable record jacket - cut by the tailor who dressed Bowie and Hendrix out of fabric woven with Wolfe’s music - and most recently the world's first live 360 AR stream from the quietest room on earth and a Space Beam via the Big Bang Horn

Wolfe’s work has been featured in the world’s leading museums (including a major solo exhibition at the V&A Museum), festivals, conferences and received nominations across the music, tech and art fields. Forbes calls Wolfe "an Artist with a capital A" for mixing her music with art, technology and science and taking it to entirely new dimensions. Wolfe is also the co-founder of a “profound” (The Times) research project looking at the power of music for people living with dementia

In this episode listen in as Alex Doman sits down with Beatie in her Los Angeles home to explore her story so far, and what is unfolding, including her new album with Linda Perry. Beatie shares why she believe music is important, and so much more…

You can catch Alex and Beatie presenting together on a panel on music and wellbeing moderated by BBC Music at the MUSIC x TECH Experience #MxT2019 in Dublin, Ireland October 10-11, 2019 where they will be joined by Austrian composer and producer Walter Werzowa, most famous for composing the “Intel bong” jingle.

#MxT2019 is a gathering of the world’s leading experts, from the established to the radical, highlighting new technologies in a changing global entertainment industry, where they explore how the dynamic between evolving consumer needs and the incorporation of the latest technological disruptions are continuously shaping the music industry of the future.

  • Dr. Michael Merzenich, PhD, is one of the neuroscientists responsible for our current understanding of brain plasticity–the notion that the brain can change itself at any age. He is also the author of Soft-Wired: How the New Science of Brain Plasticity Can Change Your Life.

In this episode listen and discover:

How you can improve your auditory listening abilities with neuroplasticity-based training to sharply improve your conversational, cognitive, speech and music abilities. How training your brain as a master listener also refines your attentive powers and amplifies your baseline level of arousal-your “brightness.” Evidence that these gains are attributable to strong, positive, enduring physical changes in your brain. The trained brain is a stronger, better brain. How combining auditory training and brain training in the other great perceptual and action-control domains, you can rejuvenate a struggling brain-and if taken seriously, can assure a more effective, happier, and more secure adult life.
