    Episode 152

Change is inevitable. Change is hard. Change forces us to adopt new habits and ways of doing things. Change helps us grow.

If anything is certain in life, it is that change will occur. It's really the only the only thing we can count on. Nothing stays the same. This couldn't be more true than in our coeliac and gluten free lives. We must come to terms with the fact that our lives change when we have a coeliac disease diagnosis or we go gluten free for another health reason.

We will grieve our former lives before we went gluten free. We will miss how we used to be able to socialise, travel and leave the house without planning and preparing so much. Everything changes once we go gluten free. But, does that have to be a bad thing? Well, that's something I've been battling to answer in my own coeliac and gluten free journey lately. That's what we'll be chatting about on today's episode of Gluten Free Thoughts.

    What I'll cover:
    * Recap on last week's episode with Grace Canning, co-founder of Allergy Life Australia
    * Grace's acceptance of change and looking at her allergies as an inevitable change in her own life
    * My own change journey since being diagnosed with coeliac disease and my current frame of mind around change
    * Looking back on where I was before my coeliac disease diagnosis and my gratefulness around the change in my life of a diagnosis
    * How we can reframe change to be a positive
    * Teaser of next week's guest episode

    Episode 147

I have something to admit to you gluten free fam: up until recently - I missed oats. I missed having porridge for breakfast. It was quick, easy & no mucking around. Unfortunately oats can’t be deemed gluten free in Australia - this may change soon so stay tuned. So until that happens Aussies with coeliac or who are gluten free for other reasons might be looking for alternatives. I’m constantly asked “where can I find some decent gluten free granola or porridge that doesn’t taste bad or have a million ingredients in them” - my answer: Bask & Co.

Today I’m joined by the founder to talk about running a successful small business in the gluten free community & what it’s actually like to start from very humble grassroots beginnings to now being stocked on supermarket shelves nationally. When you have passion, purpose & persistence it’s amazing what you can achieve & my guest does this everyday around the clock & the gluten free community is obsessed (including me).

My guest on today’s episode is Bask & Co. founder Janessa Rutter. We’ll talk about the inspiration behind the business, her delicious granola, porridge & granola bar ranges & what it’s actually like running a small gluten free business & finding purpose within the coeliac gluten free community.

    What we’ll cover:

    * What Bask & Co. is & Janessa’s mission with the business
    * Janessa’s own gluten free story
    * How Bask & Co. was created
    * Being a successful small business in the gluten free community
    * Bask & Co. ranges of gluten free granola, porridge & granola bars
    * Becoming Coeliac Australia endorsed & how that’s changed the business
    * Bask & Co. being involved in A Gluten Free Evening
    * Feedback so far from the gluten free community around Bask & Co.
    * Being stocked in Woolworths Metro & other news
    * Janessa’s current goals with Bask & Co.

I'll be sharing it all with you today. That's what we'll be talking about on today's episode of A Gluten Free Podcast!

    * Patience in learning the basics of coeliac disease & the gluten free diet
    * Patience in learning to read labels
    * Patience in navigating dining out & travelling with coeliac disease
    * Patience in understanding the mental health aspects of living with coeliac disease & being gluten free
    * Tools I've discovered which have helped improve my patience in these areas of my own coeliac & gluten free life & how you can apply these tools

    Episode 138

On today's episode of Gluten Free Thoughts we'll be chatting gluten free maths gluten free fam! Don't worry... I hate maths & I'm not really good at it either so we'll keep it really simple - I promise! We'll only be talking about addition & subtraction in our coeliac & gluten free lives. So much is taken away from us when we're diagnosed with coeliac disease (obviously gluten is taken out of our lives). With gluten taken out we need to replace it with something, much like we do whenever we take something away from our lives - it needs to be replaced by something to fill its place & return our bodies to where they naturally want to exist: in homeostasis.

    What we'll cover:
    * My recent experience taking a course of antibiotics & using probiotics
    * How we can break down complex health conditions into what we can take away from our lives & add back in to help our bodies return to homeostasis
    * Reflecting on last week's episode with Sally Marchini
    * How having a coeliac disease diagnosis & going gluten free forces us to add in other things to counteract taking gluten out of our lives
    * Adding in positive experiences, nutrition & social
    * What I've added into my life since my coeliac disease diagnosis, going gluten free & becoming a parent

  • A Gluten Free Podcast
    Episode 137

WARNING: this episode contains information & in depth discussions around miscarriage & infertility. If you're not comfortable with these topics please skip this episode & return when you are.

Amongst the between 200 - 300 symptoms of coeliac disease are unfortunately infertility & miscarriage. Infertility affects about 1 in 6 Australian couples who are trying to fall pregnant & miscarriages occur in at least 15% of confirmed pregnancies but the actual miscarriage rate is likely to be much higher, estimated to be around 1 in 4 pregnancies. Given the physical, mental & emotional trauma of infertility & miscarriage, clearly this is a discussion which needs way more attention.

My guest today is well aware of these issues. Being an accredited practising dietitian specialising in female fertility nutrition & personally having been through a diagnosis of diabetes & coeliac disease which complicated her own pregnancy - she’s here to help guide women throughout their fertility journey in what can otherwise be an extremely confusing & contradictory area.

My guest on today’s episode is accredited practising dietitian & founder of Marchini Nutrition, Sally Marchini. We’ll talk about Sally’s personal coeliac & diabetes journey, the relationship between coeliac disease & fertility issues & how to optimise gluten free nutrition before & during pregnancy.

    What we’ll cover:

    * Sally’s background & work as a dietitian & speciality in gluten free fertility nutrition
    * Sally’s own coeliac disease & diabetes journey
    * How coeliac disease can affect fertility & pregnancies
    * Coeliac disease affecting both male & female fertility
    * Coeliac disease connection to PCOS, Endometriosis, infertility, miscarriage, low iron & nutrient deficiencies
    * Specific advice around the gluten free diet & fertility/ pregnancy
    * Fertility gluten free diet supplementation
    * Sally’s pregnancy issues when diagnosed with diabetes

In Zen Buddhism there's a concept known as 'Beginner's Mindset' or 'Beginner's Mind'. This approach invites us to approach new challenges, exercises, studies & habits with open-mindedness & letting go of preconceptions.

You might be wondering... great, so how does this apply to our coeliac & gluten free lives? Well that's what I'll be discussing in today's episode of Gluten Free Thoughts. Applying this concept to our gluten free lives will allow us to be open to others' experiences, thoughts & opinions. If we approach issues or challenges in out gluten free lives rather than entering into them with preconceptions, opinions & assumptions we'll open our self to new perspectives & it will help us grow. Let's admit it - we all don't know everything & we're all students of our coeliac & gluten free journeys. But we're all learning as we go & that's what it's all about!
