On April 15th, 2013, Prof Carl Mischke was found beaten to death and face down in his blood-soaked bed. He was the ninth in a spate of murders of gay men in and around Johannesburg, South Africa but was his killing really the work of a serial killer or was his murderer actually someone closer to home?

When gay New Orleanians headed out to the UpStairs Lounge in the French Quarter on Sunday, June 24th, 1973, they had no idea that many of them would never be returning home. A fire started in the main stairwell leading up to the bar quickly spread as patrons desperately tried to escape the burning building. Until the Pulse Nightclub Massacre, this was the worst loss of Queer life in American history.
In Part 3, we look at the aftermath of the fire, including the total disregard and lack of compassion for the victims displayed by politicians, law enforcement, religious figures and the public.

When Joey and Anisha van Niekerk didn’t arrive in Pretoria for Joey’s father’s funeral on December 11th, 2017, their families knew something was wrong and drove to the women’s farm in Mooinooi, in North West Province. They found the farm untouched but, when they encountered Koos Strydom, who rented a workshop from the couple, his story didn’t quite add up. This is the story of how greed brought about the senseless murder of two women all because of a farm.
To celebrate #PrideMonth, we have partnered with Maidwell Love, an NGO based in Johannesburg, that raises funds to combat gender-based violence (GBV) and support LGBTQ causes. On February 12th, 2008, Larry King was shot twice in the back of the head by Brandon McInerney, a fellow student in his English class, all because Larry had made the fatal error of asking Brandon to be his Valentine and many blamed the school for failing to protect the perpetrator from his victim (no, you read that correctly). In Part II, we explore the aftermath and the trial, and Nj also discusses the scourge of American school shootings from an outsider’s perspective.

When 15-year-old Raymond Buys was enrolled in the Echo Wild Game Rangers camp, nobody would have guessed that, less than 4 months later, he would be dead. The owner of the camp, Alex de Koker, and his assistant, Michael Erasmus, were arrested and charged with murder, child abuse, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, but what came out in court shocked the world.

In 2017, Sduduzo Buthelezi was killed by Nkosinathi Madlala, a graphic designer he had hired to create car stickers for his business. When the case went to court, the sentence he received sent shockwaves around the country and the world.
In a new segment, Nj speaks to Roché Kester, the Hate Crimes Manager at Out LGBT Well-Being in Pretoria on the prevalence of the Gay Panic Defence in the South African justice system and how concerned the South African queer community should be about the precedent set in the Madlala judgement.

On April 11th, 2004, Adam Woest and Trevor Theys were sentenced to life imprisonment nine times over for murder for the killing of nine men in a house in Sea Point, Cape Town and 20 years for the attempted murder of the sole survivor. Trevor Theys died in 2009 but now, Adam Woest is being considered for early parole. Leigh Visser, the sister of Warren Robert Visser, one of the men killed, is determined to see Adam Woest serve out his sentence in its entirety. She spoke to Nj about her brother, what her family went through, and the campaign she has launched, calling on President Ramaphosa to keep her brother's killer behind bars.

On May 22nd, 2013, Dr Louis Heyns disappeared while driving the 50km route between his and his brother's home. According to his family, he had to have been hijacked because it made no sense from him to have been where his body was discovered: A notorious gay cruising spot in Strand, 5km out of his way. His killers insisted that he had approached them, seeking sex, but his family insist that he was straight and would have never engaged the services of a rentboy.

On March 26th, 2013, the body of Nhlanhla Gasa, a politically-connected millionaire businessman, was spotted floating in the Tugela River on KwaZulu Natal's north coast, and, not far away, his burnt-out Jaguar was discovered.
Why had he been stabbed 12 times and his body dumped in a river? He had lived a colourful life. Had his past finally caught up with him or was there any truth to the rumours that he led a secret gay lifestyle and that his toy boy had killed him?

Just days after an emotional reconciliation between father and son on national television, 21-year-old Le Roux Theunissen was found strangled to death in his home. The prime suspect is his landlord's (straight) sex buddy, but why? In Part II, we dive into the investigation, trial and conviction of Le Roux's killer, as we sort the lies from the truth and try to uncover the real reason that Le Roux's life was snuffed out so callously.

On January 20th, 2003, two men entered Sizzlers, a gay massage parlour in Sea Point, Cape Town and tortured 10 men before slitting their throats, shooting them in the head and leaving them for dead. In Part V of this five-part serial, we look into the conspiracy of the Third Man and look into the likelihood of it being a man who has cropped up regularly throughout the story. We also find out where those left behind are now and what they have been up to over the past decade and a half.

On 27th May 2008, Annicke Thofte and Danie Robbertze were found murdered in their flat in Durban, South Africa. Both had been shot in the head. What made matters worse was that their killer was known to them. That fateful Monday night, they had invited Gordon van Niekerk into their home, as they had done many times before, but what they didn’t know was that this time he was coming for more than just the wine.
