It’s been a busy year for Celiac Canada and one highlight has to have been Melissa Secord and Caleigh McAulay RD attending the International Symposium on Celiac Disease held in Sheffield UK earlier this fall.
Both Melissa and Caleigh returned with so much information regarding ongoing and upcoming research along with best practices from other countries. Melissa shares with us some new theories for better diagnosis as well as questioning some ideas we have held as fact. Caleigh presented a poster on behalf of Celiac Canada regarding our recent State of Celiac Survey and learned so much from the many sessions and from other dietitians in attendance.
Celiac Canada was well represented by Melissa and Caleigh, and I was thrilled to have an enlightening conversation with them about their experiences at the Symposium.

It’s the beginning of November and that means I get to catch up with my friend Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com. Ellen and I speak about the petition being circulated by Celiac Canada regarding a tax benefit to help with the cost of the gluten free diet. This important petition must be signed by November 10th, so if you haven’t signed and it’s before November 10, please follow the link, and send it on to friends and family – there’s strength in numbers!
Petition to Change the Way Celiacs Receive a GF Food Tax Credit
Recently there was a very broad recall of frozen waffles and pancakes which included some gluten free products and many different brands. Please check the recall notice that Ellen has posted and open your freezer to make sure you don’t have any of the contaminated packages – this is very important.
National Recall: Various Brands | Gluten-Free Waffles | Listeria Monocytogenes
Cindi Little, the Everyday Gluten Free Gourmet has posted a very interesting article about the wheat starch flour blends that are currently being imported from Europe. Ellen and I have a lively discussion. I’ve used the wheat starch, and you may have already eaten it in some commercial gluten free foods.
What are We Going to do About Wheat Starch?
Have you ever wondered about the “Gluten Friendly” claims on a restaurant menu. Selena DeVries, a Registered Dietitian gives us her take on the term, as well, Ellen and I share our opinions.

I’m again speaking with Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com to go over some of the articles she has brought to our attention over the past month and allow me to give my opinions and insight.
Sometimes we come across a company that is doing their best to meet our gluten free needs, but may not have the foundational knowledge of the gluten free diet to do so. This was the case with a storefront that sold ice cream and offered their on-site made gluten free cones. Ellen was able to speak with the owner regarding the questionable safety of the cones and now the company is better informed and able to let their celiac customers know they cannot guarantee the cones to be gluten free. Their understanding and current transparency is a plus for us.
Ellen also made us aware of a manufacturing change at Prana Foods to no longer offer gluten free oats in their products. There is somewhat of a disconnect between producers and consumers in getting this important information out there.
We hear an update on story Ellen and I spoke about in August 2022 when I interviewed author Ann Campanella. Recently Ann has won an award for her book Celiac Mom. You can listen to the original conversation at - https://bit.ly/Ep233CeliacMom.
Ellen has discovered a new cookie/dessert jar business that is gluten free and also vegan, so dairy and egg free as well. The special news here is that the products are very decadent and can be shipped across Canada – so if you want to send a tasty gift to someone this might be a good bet!

It’s the beginning of September, and I’m fortunate to have my monthly discussion with Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com to chat about the articles and happenings she has brought to our attention over the past month.
First, I have Ellen explain to me the very impactful discovery that was made at McMaster University in co-operation with other colleagues regarding the “spark” that sets off the gluten reaction.
Ellen tackles the “gluten friendly” meal descriptions we’re seeing on menus and looks at what can be done to clarify this situation.
We talk about bloating even on a gluten free diet, a topic Selena DeVries RD raised on Instagram.
Food trucks are making their mark in our cities, but Gluten Free Food Trucks can be life-changing for those of us uncomfortable attending large public events. Ellen breaks down the gluten free food truck craze on Vancouver Island.
My August has been dominated by Camp Celiac and I take some time to talk about our sponsors and how their donations made a huge difference to enhance the camp for everyone.

I’m grateful that Ellen keeps such good tabs on all the celiac and gluten free news as it comes out. She is the first person I go to if I hear of something new and she’s usually already on top of it. As well she is able to vet the articles that come across her desk and give us the information we not only need, but want. This month a great deal focussed on the affordability of the gluten free diet. This is something Celiac Canada is taking very seriously and are working with the whomever will listen in an effort to stem this tide, which is clearly hitting everyone, but it appears is hitting us harder.
Ellen and I also spoke about travelling gluten free and she mentioned a cruising website - celiaccruise.com

On this episode of the podcast, I’m catching up with Kelsea. We spoke previously on Episode 299. I’m a celiac mom, like Kelsea, but my daughter is now an adult, so we have different perspectives on how celiac disease is dealt with for a young child. Many things have changed, but also many things have stayed the same. Not least of which is the panic that sets in when your whole world changes with the diagnosis of a child. Kelsea walks us through how she handles some specific situations and the part that label reading plays as her son gets older.
Both Kelsea and I relied heavily on the information from Celiac Canada as it was more reliable than random posts online. You can find out more at www.celiac.ca.

It’s the end of May and I have another opportunity to chat with Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com to go over some of the articles and information Ellen has brought to us over the past month.
Ellen published an article about a young woman who posted online about a family situation in which she felt her needs to be on a gluten free diet were not being properly considered by other members of her family. Normally, we would side with the person who has special needs, but by reading more about the circumstances, both Ellen and I found fault in the attitude of the woman eating gluten free. You can read more in the link below.
We all know there are other medical conditions that those of us with celiac disease are more likely than the general population to have or suffer with. Ellen brings three such conditions that we should at the very least be aware of. Knowledge is power!
I mentioned again the recent podcast I produced with Avery about her mentorship program. You can find out more at celiacchat.org.
Both Ellen and I are big fans of Celiac Canada and we felt at the end of Celiac Awareness Month, it was time to suggest that listeners connect with the local Chapter that is closest to them. You can find out more at celiac.ca/living-gluten-free/peer-support/.

I often get emails from people I know within the celiac community regarding interesting people or medical professionals, who might make good guests for a podcast episode. It was during a conversation with Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com when Avery’s name came up. Ellen brought her to our attention recently. When I contacted Avery to record a conversation, we had to wait until she’d finished her final exams – that was a new one for me – and I was excited to hear her story and get the perspective of a high school student on dealing with celiac disease.
Avery had the idea of doing something to benefit the kids in our celiac community, but it took her years to formulate what that would look like. She has recently launched Celiac Chat which is an online mentoring platform to allow kids to speak to other kids, or adults who relate to their issues.

After taking some time off to recuperate from knee surgery, I’m back speaking with Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com for the beginning of May to review some of the articles she brought to our attention over the past month.
If you’re interested in the Irish Tour, best make your inquiry quickly, as spots are limited – check out the link below.
Ellen and I spoke about an article written by a reporter in upstate New York regarding his experience eating gluten free in local restaurants. I found he was able to thread together a story that many of us can relate to – but he was able to articulate it so much better than I can.
Ellen shared with us the story of a home-based bakery on Vancouver Island with a difference. She also shares some great photos of his creations. Staying on the food theme, Ellen has provided us a link to a free recipe booklet from Corn Thins – I didn’t realize they were so versatile!

It’s the beginning of April, which for me means that I get to chat with my friend Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com about interesting articles and studies she has brought to our attention over the past month. I had to record with Ellen prior to end of the March as I was preparing for knee surgery. Ellen kept posting and you can keep up with her work by subscribing to her monthly newsletter through her website.
Ellen and I both had copies of the recent booklet produced by Celiac Canada with the preliminary results from their recent survey. There is so much information in these numbers and the analysts have only scratched the surface. You can read these initial results or download the booklet at celiac.ca.
Both Ellen and I felt my recent conversation with Linda Sills regarding retirement and long-term care for her celiac mother was concerning and something we should all be concerned about for our families and ourselves. Ellen mentioned a previous a podcast I recorded with Mike Rose about choosing safe retirement living – you can listen at - https://acanadianceliacpodcast.libsyn.com/ep-168-retirement-living-gluten-free. As well Ellen wrote an article about Mike which you can read here - https://theceliacscene.com/celiac-crusader-tackles-challenges-residential-living/
Ellen told us about a new online mentoring program for kids and teens that is being started – you can find out more here - Introducing Celiac Chat - An Online Mentorship Program for Kid & Teens and hopefully I will speak with Avery for a podcast in the near future.
Villous atrophy is a term that many of us know from our diagnosis, but Ellen was able to show me an article that listed other conditions that may cause villous atrophy – and here I was thinking it was unique to Celiac Disease. Other Conditions that May Cause Villous Atrophy
On a social media note Ellen told us of a situation at a local restaurant in Victoria that recently decided to remove a popular gluten free item from their menu. This was of course unfortunate, but the negative comments on social media that ensued were somewhat over-the-top. Ellen and I comment on the issues.
I mention that I recently attended a virtual class from Cinde, the everydayglutenfreegourmet.ca. I highly recommend these classes as we can all learn to make more gluten free options.

This episode is a follow up to Episode 298 when I attended an event called The State of Celiac Disease in Canada during the last week of February. Celiac Canada held the event to present the preliminary results of the recent national survey.
During the event, Melissa Secord the Executive Director of Celiac Canada spoke. I had more questions for Melissa, so I invited her on to this episode of the Podcast. Now that the preliminary results of the survey were being evaluated, I wanted to know more about what the results meant to Celiac Canada, and how they were going to use what they were learning to advance their efforts on our behalf.
Also, at the event in February, a woman by the name of Linda Sills took to the podium to tell her family’s story of dealing with care homes for her elderly mother. Linda gave an emotional talk, and again, there was more I wanted to know. The prospect of choosing a long-term care home for a loved one or yourself, is daunting, but unfortunately, for many of us, it’s a fact of life. I was grateful that Linda trusted me with her moving story and allowed me to dig a bit deeper into how and why. This was a powerful conversation, and one you may want to refer for others to listen to. Thanks Linda, for sharing in such a personal way.

I recently realized that although many of the people I speak with have been involved in the celiac and gluten free community for many years, I wasn’t well acquainted with the families of the newly diagnosed. When I operated my bakery, I was often the first celiac that people met after their diagnosis – it appears doctors were sending them my way. Since closing the bakery, I’ve built on my knowledge, but I must admit, I need a new perspective on what it’s like to raise a celiac child today.
Ellen Bayens (theceliacscene.com) was kind enough to introduce me to Kelsea. She is a mom of a busy 10-year-old boy and can clearly remember what life was like before, during and after the diagnosis. Our conversation centres around the diagnosis and how the entire family was affected. I hope to have Kelsea on again to explore more aspects of being a parent to a celiac child. Hopefully, I’ll speak with her son at some point as well.

During the last week of February, Celiac Canada held an event called The State of Celiac Disease in Canada, during which the preliminary results of the recent national survey were presented. I was invited to bring my podcast equipment to the event and record conversations with some of those involved. This episode was recorded at the event, so you will notice some distortion and background noise in the audio – there was lots going on.
I had the pleasure of speaking with James King. James has been a guest on the podcast previously, but this conversation was all about survey results. James is an analyst who is able to make sense of the numbers. He shares some of his insights into survey results with us. I also spoke to Registered Dietician Caleigh McAulay from Celiac Canada about her role in the formulation of the survey and how the results might help her help us.

It’s time to catch up with Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com for the beginning of March 2024. I have the opportunity to review some of the articles Ellen has brought to our attention over the past month and ask questions as well as interject my own thoughts.
We talk about a line of granola snacks and breakfast s foods that recently had their “gluten free” designation removed because the manufacturer is no longer using gluten free oat products. As consumers we must accept this as a business decision, but the concern of both Ellen and I was the lack of awareness with consumers of this big change in ingredients.
Ellen brings to our attention a couple of food recalls by Health Canada of foods containing undeclared gluten. You can sign up to receive these alerts and specify which ingredients you are concerned about on the recalls and alert page - https://recalls-rappels.canada.ca/en
Ellen includes an interesting article about a young professional hockey player and his journey with celiac disease.

On this episode I speak with Diane Bertrand from a company called English Bay. I wasn’t familiar with English Bay, and that’s because they produce foods for other companies. They do, however maintain a gluten free food manufacturing facility and when the owners of Kinnikinnick were looking for a good time to retire, after all the difficulties of running a specialized food business during the pandemic, English Bay seemed like the perfect fit.
Diane fills us in on the plans for Kinnikinnick going forward, and it’s comforting to know that not only will things ramp up to get more product into stores, but the products themselves will stay the same including the “free from” identification. Diane and the team from Kinnikinnick have lots of work to do, but it’s something they have the resources and excitement for.
