Chapter IV: I am a Huron Chief

The Hurons and their prisoners started to walk.

Magua walked in front of Duncan, Cora and Alice.

The other Hurons walked behind the prisoners.

    They walked across a valley.

Then Magua led them up a steep hill.

The land at the top of the hill was flat.

Magua sat down under a tree.

The Hurons started to eat and drink.

Magua shouted to Duncan. 'Send the dark-haired woman to me!'

Cora was afraid. She went to Magua.

'What do you want?' she asked.

'I ama Huron chief,' said Magua. 'I lived twenty summers and twenty winters. I did not see a white man. I was happy! Then a white man came to the forest. He gave me brandy. The drink was bad on me. It made me crazy! My people were angry. I had to go away, I ran away and lived with the Mohawks.'

'Then the war started,' said Magua. 'The French and the English were fighting each other. The Mohawks were fighting for the English. The Hurons were fighting for the French.I was fighting my own people.'

'Your father - Munro - was our chief. He told the Mohawks "Do not drink brandy!" But a white man gave me brandy. What did Munro do? He gave orders to his men. They tied me with ropes and they heat me! I will never forget!'

    'But-'said Cora.

    'Woman!'shouted Magua .

    He stood up quickly.

'You will be my wife! Your sister will go to Fort William Henry. She must tell Munro everything. Then Munro will know. His daughter lives with me Magua.'

'Never!'said Cora. 'I will not be your wife.'

Magua smiled. 'Then you will die,' he said. 'And yourfriends will die too.'

Then Magua went towards the other Hurons. He spoke to them.

    Duncan ran to Cora.

'What is wrong?' he asked. 'What did Magua say to you?'

'It is not important,' said Cora.

The Hurons were listening to Magua.

    Duncan watched them.

    They were very angry.

    Suddenly,Magua shouted at the Hurons.

They pulled Duncan and the women towards the trees.

They tied each prisoner to a tree with rope.

Magua stood in front of Cora.

    He laughed.

'What does Munro's daughter say now?' he said. 'Shall I send your sister to your father? Will you follow me to the Great Lakes and live with me?'

    Cora looked at her sister.

'Alice,'said Cora. 'I must go with Magua and be his wife. Then you and Duncan will live.'

    'No!'shouted Duncan. 'Never!'

    'No,no, no!' said Alice.

    'Then die!' shouted Magua.

He threw his knife at Alice.

The knifecut off some of her hair.

Ithit the tree above her head.

    Duncan shouted angrily.

The Hurons had tied Duncan to a tree.

But he pulled the rope and it broke.

He jumped on a Huron and they fought.

    The Huron had a knife.

He was going to kill Duncan.

Suddenly a gun fired and the Huron fell dead.

Questions 1 to 5 are based on Conversation One.

Hi,Bob. You speak very good Chinese.

Not really, Mary. I just know a little. Actually, not being able to speak a foreign language is a bit of a British trait or a particularly British characteristic. The British are generally considered to be lazy linguists. We just don't bother to learn another language.

I guess the main reason is that when you travel around the world, you find that English is spoken almost everywhere.

Yes,yes. We get by. We survive on just using our mother language.

But you seem to love learning languages a lot. How many foreign languages can you speak?

Not that many. A bit of German, some French, Polish a little, Chinese of course, a bit of Japanese. That's about it.

I'm impressed. Well, what is the second most-spoken language in England? Is it Chinese?

    No, I don't think so.

    Then,that must be French.

No.According to the recent census, 104 different languages are spoken in the UK and Polish is the second most spoken language, followed by Punjabi and Urdu.

Then,do you have to learn a foreign language in school?

No,it's not compulsory. But recently a campaign was launched to encourage everyone in the UK to learn at least 1,000 words of another language. It hopes to help Britain increase international trade.

    1,000 words?

Yes.It's called the 1,000 Words Campaign because it says a vocabulary of 1,000 words would allow a speaker to hold a simple conversation.

That sounds like a good idea.

Yes.It gives you self-satisfaction and self-esteem if you can speak another language when you're travelling. And I think it also gives you an edge in a lot of different areas in the workplace. You feel good about learning a new skill and you feel good about yourself, and it boosts your confidence. Imagine going on a holiday to Spain and being able to speak to the locals.

Of course it does make one feel good.

And there are also the economic benefits of speaking another language. It gives you an advantage, especially if you are dealing with foreign companies.

Yes.It also shows politeness and respect for other people by showing you have made an effort.

You're right. Mm, I'm afraid I must get going now. I'll have my Chinese class at 10 o'clock.

Oh, I have a class at 10 as well. OK, see you later.

    See you.

Chapter III: The Fight at Glenn's Falls

Hawk-eye woke Duncan early the next morning.

'We must go,' he said. 'I will get the canoe. Wake Miss Cora and Miss Alice. But do not make any noise.'

Duncan went to the back of the cave.

'Cora. Alice,' he said quietly. 'Wake up.'

Suddenly there were shouts and cries outside.

Duncan ran to the front of the cave.

The sound of guns came from the forest.

There were many Indians on the other side of the river.

    'Hurons!' thought Duncan.

    Then Duncan saw Hawk-eye.

The scout was shooting from the flat rock.

Duncan saw a Huron fall into the rushing water.

Then the other Hurons ran back into the forest.

Hawk-eye came back into the cave.

    'They have gone,' he said.

'Will they come back?' asked Duncan.

'Yes, they will come back,' replied Hawk-eye. 'Miss Cora and Miss Alice must stay herein the cave. We will go to the rocks and wait for the Hurons.'

Duncan,Hawk-eye, Uncas and Chingachgook sat with their guns.

They sat behind some rocks near the waterfall.

They waited. Minutes passed. Then an hour passed.

Suddenly they heard the wild cries of the Hurons again.

Four Indians ran across the flat rock towards the cave.

Chingachgook and Uncas fired their guns.

The first two Hurons fell to the ground.

The third Huron jumped on Hawk-eye.

    Each man had a knife.

But Hawk-eye was stronger than the Huron.

He killed the Huron with his knife.

The fourth Huron fought with Duncan.

Uncas ran to help the officer.

The young Mohican killed the Huron.

Then Uncas and Duncan ran back to the rocks.

The Huron son the other side of the river started to shoot again.

    And Chingachgook shot at them.

The shooting went on and on.

Rocks and trees near the cave were broken in a hundred places.

ButHawk-eye and his friends were not hurt.

And Cora and Alice ,were safe in the cave.

Hawk-eye saw a Huron in a tree on the other side of the river.

The scout lifted his long gun and fired.

There was a cry and the Indian fell from the tree.

'I have no more bullets,' said Hawk-eye. 'Uncas! Go to the canoe. There are some bullets in the canoe.'

Uncas ran quickly across the flat rock.

    But he was too late.

A Huron was pushing the canoe across the river!

Duncan,Hawk-eye and the two Mohicans went back to the cave.

'What can we do now?' asked Duncan.

Hawk-eye thought for a few minutes.

'There will be guards on the paths,' he said. 'The Hurons will watch every path. We must swim. We must jump into the river. The rushing water will take us past the Hurons.'

The scout looked at Cora and Alice.

'We cannot swim,' said Cora. 'Alice and I will stay here. Go to General Munro at Fort William Henry. General Munro must send soldiers.'

Chingachgook, Uncas and Hawk-eye talked quietly together.

Then Chingachgook ran out of the cave and jumped into the river.

A moment later, Hawk-eye put down his long gun and followed Cora looked at Uncas.

    'Go with them,' she said.

'I will stay,' said the young Mohican.

'No!' said Cora. 'Please, Uncas. Go with them!'

Uncas was unhappy. But he jumped into the water too.

    Cora looked at Duncan.

'I am going to stay,' said Duncan.

He looked at Alice. 'I cannot leave you.'

There were shouts and cries from the Hurons on the flat rock.

Duncan looked out of the cave.

The Hurons were looking behind the rocks near the waterfall.

'They are looking for us,' thought Duncan.

He went quickly back into the cave.

'Our friends will bring help soon,' he said to Cora and Alice.

Cora was afraid. Her face was white. She cried out.

Duncan turned and he saw the terrible face of Magua!

'Where are the Mohicans?' asked Magua. 'Where is the scout, Hawk-eye – The Long Gun?'

Suddenly, the cave was full of Hurons.

One of them picked up Hawk-eye's gun.

'They have gone,' said Duncan. 'They will bring help soon.'

    The Hurons were angry.

They were going to kill their prisoners.

But Magua spoke to them, quickly and quietly.

Then the Hurons took Duncan, Cora and Alice to the flat rock.

One of the Hurons brought the canoe.

'Get into the canoe!' Magua said.

Duncan and the sisters got into the canoe.

Magua and the Hurons took them across the river.

The prisoners got out of the canoe on the other side of the river.

Magua and five Hurons stayed with them.

The other Hurons walked away into the forest.

    The Linguistic Gift of Babies

Good morning, everyone. In today's lecture, I'm going to talk about something you can't see. That is, what's going on in the little brain of a baby.

For example, how babies learn a language.

It is always a question people show great interest in.

Babies and children are geniuses until they turn seven, and then there's a systematic decline.

Work in my lab is focused on the first critical period in development, and that is the period in which babies try to master which sounds are used in their language.

We think, by studying how the sounds are learned, we'll have a model for the rest of language, and perhaps for critical periods that may exist in childhood for social, emotional and cognitive development.

So we've been studying the babies by conducting an experiment.

During our experiment, the baby, usually a six-monther, sits on a parent's lap, and wetrain them to turn their heads when a sound changes—like from"ah" to "ee".

If they do so at the appropriate time, the black box lights up and a panda bear pounds a drum. What have we learned?

Well, babies all over the world are what I like to describe as "citizens of the world".

They can discriminate all the sounds of all languages no matter what country we'retesting and what language we're using, and that's remarkable because you know,I can't do that.

    We're culture-bound listeners.

We can discriminate the sounds of our own language, but not those of foreign languages.

So the question arises: When do those citizens of the world turn into the language-bound listeners that we are?

And the answer: before their first birthdays.

What you see here is performance on that head-turn task for babies tested in Tokyo and the United States, here in Seattle, as they listened to the "ra"and "la"- sounds important to English, but not to Japanese.

So at six to eight months, the babies are totally equivalent.

Two months later, something, something incredible occurs.

The babies in the United States are getting a lot better while babies in Japan are getting a lot worse.

So the question is: What's happening during this critical two-month period?

We know this is the critical period for sound development, but what's going on up there?

May bethere are two things going on.

The first is that the babies are listening intently to us, and they're taking statistics as they listen to us talk—they're taking statistics.

That is to say, the two babies listen to their own mother speaking motherese—the universal language we use when we talk to kids.

During the production of speech, when babies listen, what they're doing is taking statistics, that is, sound distribution on the language that they hear.

And those sound distributions grow and babies absorb more.

And what we've learned is that babies are sensitive to the statistics, and the statistics of Japanese and English are very, very different.

I mean, the sound distribution of both languages is different.

    我的意思是,两种语言的声音分布是不同的。

    So babies absorb the statistics of the language and it changes their brains;

    所以婴儿会吸收语言的统计数据,这会改变他们的大脑;

it changes them from the citizens of the world to the culture-bound listeners that we are because we as adults are no longer absorbing those statistics.

In this case, of course, we're arguing that the learning of language material may slowdown when our distribution stabilizes.

OK.Today, we just talked about a recent project on babies' language development.

In our next lecture, we will concentrate on bilingual people, how bilinguals keep two sets of statistics in mind at once.

Chapter II: Lost In The Forest

A few miles west of Fort Edward, three men were sitting near a river.

Two of the men were Indians.

The other man was a white man.

Chingachgook and his son, Uncas, were Mohicans.

The white man was a scout called Hawk-eye.

    Hawk-eye had a long hunting-gun.

    The three men were talking.

'My tribe is the oldest Indian tribe,' Chingachgook said. 'The blood of the Mohican chiefs is in me. Many summer ago, my tribe came here to the land of the Delawares.'

'Where are the Mohicans now?' asked Hawk-eye.

'Where are the flowers of those summers?' said Chingachgook. 'Gone. All dead. After my death, Uncas will be the last of the Mohicans.'

    Suddenly,they heard a noise.

    Theyturned quickly.

    Hawk-eyelifted his gun.

    'Who is it?' he said.

Duncan Heyward rode out of the forest. Cora and Alice followed him.

'I am an English officer,' Duncan said. 'We have come from Fort Edward. How far is it to Fort William Henry?'

    Hawk-eye laughed. 'Fort William Henry?

'You are going the wrong way,' he said. 'You are near Glenn's Falls.'

'The wrong way!' said Duncan. 'Then we are lost. But our Indian guide–'

'You have an Indian guide but you are lost in the forest?' said Hawk-eye. 'That is very strange. Is he a Delaware?'

'He is called Magua. He is a Huron', said Duncan.

'But he lives with the Mohawks, and he is a guide for the Huron!' said Hawk-eye quickly.'You can trust a Mohican or a Delaware. But you cannot trust a Huron! Your guide will lead you to his friends. They will kill you. Let me see him.'

Magua was standing behind Cora's horse.

    Hawk-eye looked at him.

Then he went and spoke to Chingachgook and Uncas.

Magua moved quickly. He ran into the forest.

Hawk-eye,Chingachgook and Uncas ran after him.

    But Magua escaped.

'What can I do?' thought Duncan. 'We are lost.'

    He turned to Hawk-eye.

'Will you take us to Fort William Henry?' he asked. 'We will give you money.'

Hawk-eye looked at Cora and Alice.

'We will take you,' he told Duncan.

'Money is not important. We will not leave you and the two young women here. Magua and his Huron friends will find you. Come now – quickly!'

Duncan and Hawk-eye spoke to Cora and Alice.

The sisters got off their horses.

The Mohicans took the animals away.

'They will hide the horses until the morning,' said Hawk-eye.

He pulled a canoe from the tall grass at the side of the river.

'Get into the canoe,' he said. 'We will go to a cave and we will stay there tonight.'

Duncan,Cora and Alice got into the canoe.

Hawk-eye pushed the canoe to the middle of the river.

Then he got into the canoe.

He started to paddle along the river.

Soon they heard the sound of a great waterfall in front of them –Glenn's Falls.

A few minutes later, they saw the waterfall.

Hawk-eye paddled the canoe close to the great waterfall.

Alice was afraid. She closed her eyes.

Hawk-eye stop the canoe by a large flat rock, Cora, Alice and Duncan got out of the canoe.

'Wait on the flat rock, rock I said to them. I will bring the Mohicans.'

A few minutes later, Hawk-eye came back with Chingachgook and Uncas.

The scout led everybody to a cave behind the waterfall.

The cave was deep and narrow and dark.

    Hawk-eye immediately made a fire.

Alice looked at the tall young Mohican, Uncas.

'A strong man is guarding us,' she said quietly to her sister. 'We will be safe tonight.'

Question 6 to 10 are based on Conversation Two.

Well, for years people have been trying to keep up with the joneses. But instead of competing with your neighbors, how about actually trying to get along with them. Joining us with some simple tips on how to deal with those like able and not so likable neighbors is Betty Wong. She is the executive editor of Family Circle Magazine. Good morning, Betty.

    Good morning, Allen.

Well,in an ideal world, I guess we would all get along with our neighbors, wouldn't we?

    Right,right, we hope so.

But how do we establish a good relationship? When you move into a neighborhood, right, should you to reach out to the neighbors or should they be reaching out to you?

I think it can work either way, I mean, certainly, if they don't reach out to you, don't assume that they are being rude or unfriendly. They just might beholding back because they think you're too busy. So if they don't make that first step, you know, after a few days go ahead and introduce yourself.

Yeah, neighbors can be really helpful. But, of course they can also be annoying. For example, neighbors who make a lot of noise.

Well, loud music is one of those top complaints, and I think you know for most reasons. People, they probably aren't even aware that they are causing problems for the neighbor. And I think if you bring it up to your neighbors' attention, they will be more than happy to fix it. You could say something like, you know,I'm kind of, I am really a light sleeper or I suffered from headache. Can you help me out by, you know, turning down the music during the evening hours or the early morning or come up with a compromise that works for both of you.

Don't just call the police, right, which a lot of people do?

    Of course, no.

Right, then, what about a nosy neighbor.

Right,I think a lot of time we made mistake nosy behavior for being, you know, nosy or poky when they are just being kind of trying to be friendly. Or maybe that person's lonely, it's, you kind of have to see what the motive is there. And oftentimes if you are a little evasive or, you just don't answer their question they often take the hint and back off.

And the neighbor that comes to visit and won't go away?

Well,I think you know that. There might be somebody who is just really lonely and wants a friend.

You know oftentimes I think the rule is, a five or ten minute visit is fine. Because you know the way you are not imposing on that person's schedule or that person's plan. But you know you don't have to be best friends with her neighbor at all. You can just be polite and say hello in the morning and that makes everybody's relationship so much better.

    Chapter I: The Two Sisters

    It was the year 1757.

The place was the dangerous and wild land, west of the Hudson River.

It was the third year of the war in North America.

The war was between England and France.

Each country wanted the land for itself.

Indian tribes had always lived in that land.

In the war, some tribes were fighting for the French.

Other tribes were fighting for the English.

Fort Edward was on the Hudson River.

General Webb was the commander of the English army at Fort Edward.

He was waiting for news of General Montcalm.

Montcalm was the commander of the French army.

    The news came one morning.

    An Indian called Magua arrived.

'Montcalm and the French army are coming towards Fort William Henry,' Magua told General Webb Fort.

William Henry was fifteen miles away.

It was at the south end of Lake Horican.

'How many men has Montcalm got?' asked Webb.

'As many as the leaves on the trees,' said Magua.

'General Munro wants more soldiers at Fort William Henry.'

'I will send fifteen hundred men,' said General Webb.

General Munro was the commander of the English army at Fort William Henry.

He had two daughters - Cora and Alice.

Cora was about twenty-three years old and Alice was eighteen.

Cora had dark hair and a beautiful face.

Alice had fair hair and blue eyes.

These two young women were at Fort Edward.

But they were going to travel to Fort William Henry.

They were going to meet their father.

General Webb spoke to Cora and Alice.

'Magua knows a secret path through the forest,' said General Webb. 'He will be your guide. Magua and Major Duncan Heyward will take you to Fort William Henry.'

Major Duncan Heyward was a young English officer.

He and the two young women left FortEdward.

    They rode on horses.

Magua walked in front of them.

    Alice watched Magua.

'I don't like him, Cora,' she said. 'What do you think? Will we be safe in the forest with Magua?'

'We must trust Magua,' said Cora.

'The French know our soldiers' paths,' said Duncan. 'But Magua's path is secret.'

He smiled at Alice, and she smiled at him.

Duncan Heyward was in love with Alice.

'Magua is a Huron,' said Duncan. 'But he lived with the Mohawks. The Mohawks are friends of the English. Magua came to us. Your father-'

Duncan stopped. Then he said, 'But I don't remember all the story.'

    Duncan knew more about Magua.

But he did not tell Cora and Alice.

He did not say, 'A few years ago, your father's men beat Magua. Now Magua hates your father.'

Duncan did not want to frighten the young women.

So they followed Magua through the forest.

    They cannot capture him.

The next night, Zorro silently enters the Governor's home.

He wants to talk to the Governor and Captain Ramon.

They are sitting near the fire.

Zorro enters and says, "Don't move and don't make a noise. I want to speak to you."

He has a pistol in one hand and a sword in the other.

"Zorro! Why are you here?" asks the Governor.

"You are here to die!" says Captain Ramon.

"No,"answers Zorro, "I am here to bring justice. I am here to learn the truth.Governor, you want to punish the Pulido family. Why?"

"They are traitors. They are your friends, Zorro! They help you. Your friends are my enemies,"says the Governor.

"They are not traitors. They do not help me. They are not my friends," he says.

"Look at this letter. It accuses them," says the Governor.

Zorro reads the letter and says, "It is Captain Ramon's letter. He accuses the Pulido family."

Zorro looks at the Captain and says, "Captain, you are a liar but I am here to punish you. Tell the Governor the truth about the Pulido family."

Zorro puts his pistol to Captain Ramon's head and says, "Tell the Governor the truth or I shoot!"

Captain Ramon is silent. His face is white.

"Tell the truth, you liar," says Zorro.

"Yes,I am a liar. The letter is not true."

"This is terrible!" says the Governor. "You are a liar. You cannot be the Captain of the Presidio!"

At that moment, the Captain pulls out his sword.

    He begins to fight Zorro.

It is a long sword fight.

In the end, Zorro kills Captain Ramon.

"The Captain is dead," says Zorro to the Governor.

Outside the Governor's home, there are many soldiers.

    They want to capture Zorro.

He sees Lolita on her horse.

He shouts, "Lolita, come with me. We must hide in the old tavern. This time it is very difficult to escape. There are soldiers all around us."

"I'm happy to be with you Zorro," says Lolita.

"I'm not scared." Zorro and Lolita hide inside the old tavern.

    The soldiers try to enter.

    Zorro is ready to fight.

Suddenly, The Avengers come to rescue Zorro and Lolita.

They explain many things to the Governor.

    The Governor pardons Zorro.

Zorro and Lolita walk out of the old tavern. They are free.

    Everyone is happy and cheers.

The Governor says, "Now that you are free, show us your face!"

    "Yes! Yes!" the people say.

Zorro takes off his black mask.

"It's Don Diego Vega!" exclaims Sergeant Gonzales.

    Everyone is very surprised.

"My son, Don Diego! I can't believe it!" exclaims Don Alejandro.

Lolita looks at him and says, "Is this true or is it a dream? Are you really Don Diego?"

"Yes,my love. I am your Don Diego and your Zorro!" he says embracing Lolita.

    Online Education

    Good morning, everybody.

In today's lecture, we will talk about online education.

You know, in some parts of the world, it is not that easy for people to receive education.

And even in the United States where education is available, it might not be within reach.

Thus, online courses provided by those world-famous universities can bring the best quality education to as many people as we could around the world, and for free.

First, let's talk a little bit about some of the components that go into online education.

The first component is that when you move away from the constraints of a physical classroom and design content for an online format, you can breakaway from, for example, the one-hour lecture format.

You can break up the material, for example, into short, modular units of 8 to 12 minutes, and each of the short units introduces a coherent concept.

Students can deal with this material in different ways, depending on their backgrounds, theirs kills or their interests.

So,for example, some students might benefit from a little bit of preparatory material that other students might already have.

Other students might be interested in a particular topic that they want to pursue individually.

So this format allows students to break away from the one-size-fits-all model of education, and allows students to follow a much more personalized curriculum.

Second and perhaps one of the biggest components of our online education is that when we need to have students who practice with the material in order to really understand it.

There's been a range of studies that demonstrate the importance of this.

A study in Science last year, for example, demonstrates that even simpleretrieval practice, where students are just supposed to repeat what they've already learned, gives considerably improved results on various achievement tests.

So,we need to build in much more meaningful practice questions.

Now,fortunately, technology has helped us to provide the students with feedback on those questions.

We can now grade a range of interesting types of homework online.

The third component is what is called collaborative learning.

Students could collaborate in different online courses in a variety of ways.

First of all, there was a question and answer forum, where students could pose questions, and other students could answer those questions.

And what is really amazing is that, because there were so many students, it means that even if a student posed a question at 3 o'clock in the morning, somewhere around the world there would be somebody who was awake and working on the same problem.

And so, in many of the online courses, the median response time for a question on the question and answer forum was 22 minutes.

So in a word, if we wanted to offer top quality education to everyone around the world for free, what would that affect us?

    Three things.

First,it would establish education as a fundamental human right, where anyone around the world with the ability and the motivation could get the skills they need.

    Second,it would enable lifelong learning.

It's a shame that for so many of us, learning stops when we finish high school or when we finish college.

By making this amazing content available, we would be able to learn something new every time we wanted, whether it's just to expand our minds or it's to change our lives.

And finally, this would make a wave of innovation possible, because amazing talent can be found everywhere.

To sum up today, we have talked about some features of online education and it's benefits.

We are sure that online education will have a promising future.

In the next lecture, we're going to learn how online education has changed people around the world.
