It doesn't matter if you plan to publish the story you want to tell, or just need to get it out onto the page for yourself, the insight she shares in this episode is so valuable. I also love following Ally on IG and have pointed my own journaling students towards her book The Power of Writing It Down.

I'm kicking the series off with my friend Amy B. Harris. Amy has been a producer, writer, and show runner on some of the most iconic shows of our lifetime. Her credits include Sex and the City, Gossip Girl, The Comeback, The Carrie Diaries, The Wilds, and more. She's also a mom raising her daughter in Hollywood, which is how we met and became friends.

  • Emotions like anger, fear, and anxiety are often rooted in a feeling of helplessness.
These feelings may or may not be tied to facts that are hard to ignore or release, or they be feelings that are holding us back from walking down our best path.
But today we're asking: What feels out of control?

  • Maybe it was a weird conversation or an offhand remark or a comment on a social media post, but whatever happened, you're spinning out. This circumstance has tapped into all of your securities and now you're filled with self-doubt or anger or unworthiness.
How do you recenter yourself? I'm going to share 5 ways I've learned to quiet my mind amid chaos and guess what - I am NOT recommending journaling or meditation. • My 5 Friendship Philosophies are:

    Friendship is a TO DO

    Believe the Best

    Just Go

    Like Every Selfie

Your Spouse Is Not Your Best Friend

I explain these all in more detail in The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs, but I also encourage the reader (and the listener) to find their own friendship philosophies. Rules to live by that will make your connections stronger and your mental load lighter.
This Sunday, sit with these ideas and also come up with your own.

  • The first story I tell in my book The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs is called A Friendship Reckoning. In this chapter, I share about a painful conflict with a friend that almost led to the end of our deep friendship, and how we reconciled with one big, meaningful, conversation in my backyard.
I chose to keep that friend anonymous in the book, but she revealed herself in an episode my Secret Tapes podcast series and I'm airing it publicly here for the first time.
There is so much about this conversation that gets to the heart of what I was trying to convey in The Life Council. We talk about the origin of our friendship, how our friendship styles have changed over the last few years, and, of course, we finally delve into what went wrong that almost led her to ending our friendship, and how we decided to save it together.
The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs was released into the world one year ago this month! I'm celebrating that by sharing this beautiful conversation with my dear friend Patty.

  • This episode is important for anyone with anxiety or anyone with a loved one who suffers from anxiety.
Four years ago, in the earliest days of the Covid-19 pandemic, I stumbled across a video of clinical psychologist Dr. Becky Kennedy giving advice on how to manage the increasing anxieties of the lockdown. I asked her to be a guest on the podcast and we then recorded one of the most important conversations of my life.
I aired that episode as a BONUS in March of 2020, and decided that I wanted to replay it now as the world continues to feel fraught and uncertain. We could all use Dr. Becky's reminder that anxiety always makes sense.
Since we recorded this conversation, Dr. Becky Kennedy has become a household name in the parenting space. She has a podcast, a #1 New York Times best selling book, a Ted Talk, courses and seminars, and an informative and popular Instagram account.

  • One of my greatest teachers of the last few years is author, podcaster, and speaker Emily P. Freeman. I have learned so much from her work and devoured her latest NEW YORK TIMES best selling book How To Walk Into A Room: The Art of Knowing When To Stay and When To Walk Away.
Emily says, "Our whole life is like a house, and every commitment, community, role, and relationship is like a room." In this conversation, Emily and I continue her room metaphor and she asks 10 Questions from her book that we can use to discern our own sense of belonging, and our choices to stay or leave.
The framework of these 10 questions is perfect for 10 Things To Tell You and I loved unpacking each of these questions and concepts with Emily.

  • My daughter Lucy is 14 and has had a cell phone for about a year and a half. My son Finch is 12 and will get his first cell phone in just a few months. While we're in the transitional time as a family, I thought it would be a good time to sit down with them and talk through all the feelings, convenience, and concerns that comes with teen cell phone usage.
This conversation surprised me. Both kids said things I'd never heard them say before. I hope that this episode is a fun peek into our family dynamics and also an encouragement to have your own conversations about cell phones and social media.
