Exploring Desire and Intimacy in Long-Term Relationships with Esther Perel's Insights in Mating in Captivity

This episode delves into Esther Perel's work 'Mating in Captivity', exploring the dynamics of desire in long-term relationships. The discussion focuses on the paradox between security and excitement, the challenge of maintaining individuality within a partnership, and how past experiences shape current desires. Examples from Perel's book illustrate how intimacy can be rekindled through communication, playfulness, and exploring unconventional dynamics. The conversation also touches on modern challenges such as parenting and monogamy, emphasizing the importance of open dialogue and intentional connection to keep the spark alive over time.

    Key takeaways:

Maintain a sense of individuality and separateness within a relationship, as excessive merging can diminish desire.

Embrace playfulness, novelty, and spontaneity to reignite passion and see your partner with 'fresh eyes.'

Openly communicate desires, fantasies, and needs without shame to foster vulnerability and understanding.

Explore creative ways to express intimacy beyond just intellectualizing, tapping into embodied experiences.

Nurture desire as an ongoing process requiring care and intentional efforts, not just a destination.

Recognize that parenthood, societal pressures, and relationship patterns can impact desire over time.

Consider redefining traditional notions of monogamy and fidelity based on personal values and needs.

Reflect on how early childhood experiences shape one's unique 'erotic blueprint' and approach to intimacy.

Nexus Book Summary - Exploring Information Networks: From Ancient Myths to Modern Algorithms

This episode of StoryShots delves into a book analyzing the influence of information networks on human history, examining how they evolved from ancient storytelling to modern digital algorithms. The discussion highlights the book's argument that information, rather than humans, is the central force shaping history. It questions the assumption that more information automatically improves the world and explores how narratives, both factual and fictional, impact civilization. The transformation from spoken stories to written records gave rise to bureaucracies, reshaping societal structures. The script draws parallels between historical and modern information control, highlighting the role of algorithms today and the emergence of a 'silicon curtain' that influences our understanding. It emphasizes the need for transparency, the risks of unsupervised AI, and the importance of human agency to navigate the complex digital landscape. The narrative concludes on a cautiously optimistic note, advocating for critical thinking and a proactive approach in shaping the future information networks.

Click to Tweet: “In the Dietary Inflammatory Index, the single most anti-inflammatory food is the spice turmeric, followed by ginger and garlic, and the most anti-inflammatory beverage is green or black tea” – Michael Greger.

Obesity is a greater epidemic than it has ever been. Greger explains we are currently ten times fatter than we were 100 years ago. Additionally, this growth in obesity has not been linear. Instead, obesity in developed nations has grown exponentially in the last fifty years. Worryingly, this increase in obesity is showing no signs of slowing down. Some diets claim the issue is your willpower. Greger challenges this claim and instead explains our bodies simply react to the food we eat in the way it has been designed.
The human body evolved within environments where food was scarce. Due to this scarcity, we have evolved to store excess calories as fat to survive the winter months. Additionally, we tend to crave high-calorie foods more for this same reason. The reason for the obesity epidemic is that these high-calorie foods are now readily available. The 70s brought with it deep-freezing and ready meals. Plus, an introduction of treat foods as an everyday option. The issue with the increased processing characterized by the 80s is these food items lack fiber and nutritional value. Plus, they are filled with added sugars and oils. Greger calls these foods CRAP (calorie-rich and processed).
Dr. Michael Greger is a physician, New York Times bestselling author of How Not to Die, and internationally recognized speaker on nutrition, food safety, and public health issues. A founding member and Fellow of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, Dr. Greger is licensed as a general practitioner specializing in clinical nutrition. He is a graduate of the Cornell University School of Agriculture and Tufts University School of Medicine. Tara Westover’s Perspective

Tara Westover is an American memoirist, essayist, and historian. Tara overcame immense childhood adversity to excel academically and become highly influential. In 2019, she was chosen by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people. Tara also has a solid academic record. She earned a Master’s degree from the University of Cambridge as a Gates Cambridge Scholar. Plus, Tara was a visiting fellow at Harvard University in 2010. Subsequently, she returned to the University of Cambridge in 2014 to earn a doctorate in intellectual history.

Childhood looks different for everyone. For some, it’s a time of happiness and innocence as you play the day away. For others, it’s more complicated.

From a young age, Tara Westover knew her life was different. She was the youngest of seven children, and her parents intended to raise their family steeped in the Mormon religion. Additionally, the children were expected to help out on the family’s rural farm.

    Living as Survivalists

Tara enjoyed the carefree freedom of playing in nature and running through the hills of the nearby mountains. However, there was a reason the family lived on a rural farm. Tara’s father, Gene, had overwhelming paranoia. Gene believed that the government’s primary aim was to brainwash society and stray them away from God. This led Gene to raise the family as survivalists. Survivalists over-prepare with the expectation that the worst is inevitable.

Therefore, Tara and her siblings had to carry supplies with them at all times. Additionally, their parents advised them to run for the hills if the government’s police ever came for them. Tara’s supplies would include herbal medicines, as traditional medicine was considered evil by her family. Plus, she carried water purifiers, guns, knives, and long-lasting meals. This upbringing was so strict that Tara’s grandmother once encouraged Tara to run away with her to Arizona. Tara’s grandmother did not hold the same beliefs as Tara’s parents. Tara thought long and hard about this proposition but eventually rejected the offer.

As well as instilling fear in Tara and his other children, Gene also had extreme views on gender roles. Gene’s Mormon beliefs encouraged him to believe that women should remain in the home as caregivers. Gene did let Tara’s mother, Faye, work as a midwife. However, this was only because the role was an extension of her caregiving role as a woman. As Faye disagreed with traditional medicine, she took a holistic approach to medicine. Essentially, she was an herbalist.

    Introduction
How to Make Money in Stocks has sold over 2 million copies worldwide. O'Neil's CAN SLIM Investing system makes it easy for investors to pick good stocks. He also shares tips to help budding investors to choose the best mutual funds and ETFs. The book aims to show you how to make intelligent investments, even if you haven't owned stocks before. As a new investor, you'll have many questions, such as where do I start? What should I look for in a stock? This guide has you covered.

Charts help track the daily price changes of stock based on supply and demand in the stock market. Learning to decode price movements on charts is key to making money in the stock market in the long run.

Don't buy a stock solely based on its fundamental characteristics (cash flow, ROI, history of profit retention, etc.). Charts present a stock's price and volume history to you to decide if the stock is strong and worth buying or weak.

Always carry out a technical analysis of a stock using its price chart before investing. An analysis helps determine when a stock is worth buying at a price point and when to sell. You should also learn to spot patterns on the price chart to predict price movements. Price patterns and technical indicators give you a great idea of strong entry and exit points.

Leil Lowndes is an internationally recognized communications expert. She has conducted communication seminars for major US corporations, foreign governments, and the US Peace Corps. Lowndes has appeared on hundreds of television and radio programs. She has authored ten bestselling books on communications. These books have been published in over 26 foreign languages

How to Talk to Anyone is a psychology-backed book that offers guidance on effective communication. Lowndes covers a wide range of communication types, broken down into verbal and nonverbal, across almost every possible context. Your approach should adapt depending on whom you are talking to and the specific context. So, How to Talk to Anyone offers guidance on how you can become a master communicator. As a master communicator, you can connect with others irrespective of the environment.

80% of first impressions is the way you look and move. In fact, studies suggest that emotional reactions occur in our brains before we even have time to register a reaction to somebody. So, try to utilize Leil Lowndes’ tips to intrigue everyone through your first impressions.

Lowndes advises against quick smiles. If you interact with somebody, you should start by looking at their face for a second and pausing. This pause will let you soak in their persona. You should then let out a big warm smile that floods across your face. Allow this flood to overflow into smiling with your eyes. While engaging with the flooding smile, you should also try to maintain eye contact. Others will respect you more if you maintain strong eye contact. Specifically, this ability is associated with intelligence and abstract thinking.

Lowndes’ second technique builds on the importance of maintaining eye contact. She describes how you should adopt sticky eyes. This means you should not break eye contact even after they have finished speaking. Once you have decided to break eye contact, you should do so slowly and reluctantly. Lowndes believes this approach will send a message to others to comprehend their conversation and respect them as an individual.

When you are seeking romance, you should utilize what Lowndes describes as epoxy eyes. If you are romantically interested in someone, maintain deep eye contact with them even when they are not the person talking. If they are interested in you, keeping eye contact while they are a listener can be an effective aphrodisiac.

    Introduction
Do you want to be rich or wealthy? Did you know there was a difference between the two?
The Psychology of Money explains what that difference is. In this digestible book, Morgan Housel shares 19 short stories illustrating how we think about money.
He considers how past experiences can worsen our long-term financial gains. Moving the goalposts and being coldly rational can have a similar effect. Instead, set clear and sensible financial goals that don’t depend too much on how things have been in the past.
The Psychology of Money covers a lot of ground in just over 200 pages. This is the book for you if you’re looking for ways to be wealthy, not rich.

“Having a strong sense of controlling one’s life is a more dependable predictor of positive feelings of wellbeing than any of the objective conditions of life we have considered.” — Morgan Housel

Our current relationships with money are based on our past experiences. Housel uses the example of people who struggled during the Great Recession that started in 2007, and are now scared of reinvesting.
We shouldn’t judge others for their financial decisions. We have all simply had different experiences of investing. We must learn to make investment decisions based on our goals and investment options rather than experiences.
The world is always changing. Relying on your experiences means you’re basing your decisions on knowledge of a different world.

StoryShots Book Summary and Review of The Obesity Code: Unlocking the Secrets of Weight Loss (Why Intermittent Fasting Is the Key to Controlling Your Weight) by Dr. Jason Fung

    Introduction
In this best-selling book, The Obesity Code, Dr. Jason Fung sets out an original and well-supported theory of obesity. Traditional thinking was that obesity is a function of calorie intake and exercise. However, Dr. Fung shares new insights into how proper nutrition and weight loss are functions of hormones. He focuses on insulin and how this powerful hormone appears to be the key to regulating metabolism. We can develop "insulin resistance," which makes us fat.
Dr. Jason Fung's theories use the latest scientific research into nutrition and obesity. This book is a step-by-step guide on losing weight and rebooting your health.
We face an obesity epidemic. Despite all the diet advice available, we seem to get fatter. Dr. Fung brings a new perspective to the conversation on obesity with his bestseller, The Obesity Code.
“Not only full of insights but also surprisingly funny. Read it to understand why the world became fat, how to reverse the epidemic—and how to stay thin yourself.” – Andreas Eenfeldt, MD, Founder of Dietdoctor.com
