StoryShots Book Summary and Review of Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus: The Classic Guide to Understanding the Opposite Sex by John Gray
    Introduction
“A valuable, much-needed book. A contribution to the understanding of the communication styles of men and women.” — Harville Hendrix, author of Getting the Love You Want
In relationships, men and women often behave differently, leading to the two parties having different expectations and goals. This can cause conflict and strain relationships.
Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus is a #1 New York Times bestselling book on the common relationship problems between men and women. The book believes these difficulties result from psychological differences between the sexes. At the most basic level, we can distinguish between the sexes based on how they respond to stress.
The book helps men and women understand each other and reconcile their differences. John Gray creates a translation guide using the playful metaphor of men being from Mars and women being from Venus. Both Martians and Venusians can use this guide to better understand each other. Through this guide, they can develop intimacy and build stronger relationships.
Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus has now sold more than 15 million copies and is the highest-ranked work of non-fiction from the 1990s.
“Gray offers a Berlitz of the heart, a translation of that foreign language your spouse is speaking. And hearing.” — USA Today

    Introduction
Do you want to be rich or wealthy? Did you know there was a difference between the two?
The Psychology of Money explains what that difference is. In this digestible book, Morgan Housel shares 19 short stories illustrating how we think about money.
He considers how past experiences can worsen our long-term financial gains. Moving the goalposts and being coldly rational can have a similar effect. Instead, set clear and sensible financial goals that don’t depend too much on how things have been in the past.
The Psychology of Money covers a lot of ground in just over 200 pages. This is the book for you if you’re looking for ways to be wealthy, not rich.

    About Morgan Housel
Morgan Housel is a partner at Collaborative Fund and a former columnist at The Motley Fool and The Wall Street Journal. He is a two-time winner of the Best in Business Award from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers.

“Having a strong sense of controlling one’s life is a more dependable predictor of positive feelings of wellbeing than any of the objective conditions of life we have considered.” — Morgan Housel
    Click to Tweet

Our current relationships with money are based on our past experiences. Housel uses the example of people who struggled during the Great Recession that started in 2007, and are now scared of reinvesting.
We shouldn’t judge others for their financial decisions. We have all simply had different experiences of investing. We must learn to make investment decisions based on our goals and investment options rather than experiences.
The world is always changing. Relying on your experiences means you’re basing your decisions on knowledge of a different world.

    About Michael Matthews
Michael Matthews is the bestselling fitness author of Bigger Leaner Stronger, Thinner Leaner Stronger, and The Shredded Chef. He is also the founder of Legion Athletics. His simple, science-based approach to building muscle, losing fat, and getting healthy has helped him sell over a million books. His work has been featured in many popular outlets, including Esquire, Men’s Health, Elle, Women’s Health, Muscle & Strength, and more, as well as on FOX and ABC.

    Introduction
Bigger Leaner Stronger: The Simple Science of Building the Ultimate Male Body focuses on the best tips for building muscle and losing fat. Michael Matthews gives you a blueprint for how you can start eating and exercising your way towards a bigger, leaner, and stronger body. He claims this book should offer the advice required to gain 10 to 15 pounds of lean mass in just 8-12 weeks.

    StoryShot #1: Progressive Tension Overload

Michael Matthews believes that progressive tension overload is fundamental to growing and sustaining a highly muscular body. He defines progressive tension overload as the practice of incrementally increasing the heaviness of the weights that you are lifting. As your muscles grow, using the same heaviness of weight will lower the tension placed on your muscle fibers. But to continue to grow your muscles, you must continue to increase this tension level by increasing the heaviness of your weights. Michael Matthews advises that even if you listen to all the other advice in this book, you’ll still fail to build muscle if you do not progressively overload. So always add another rep or a little bit of weight compared to your last workout.
Matthews explains that the concept of progressive overload is not solely a modern one. Instead, the ancient Greek hero Milo was said to have carried a cow on his back daily from childhood. But over the years, the cow grew in size. Crucially, as the cow grew, so did Milo’s physique. Milo’s strength grew in proportion to the increase in weight he had to carry.
Finally, progressive overload can be a highly effective motivator. If you notice progress in the weight you can lift, you notice progress even if progress is not yet visible on your body. Track what you lift, so you beat that weight every workout. Achieving incremental goals activates the reward center of the brain, which releases dopamine. Over time, these regular dopamine releases can change neural pathways to signal the expectation of rewards when it comes time to work out. This rewiring of the brain can improve workout stamina and motivation to hit the gym even on a tough day.

StoryShots Book Summary and Analysis of The 5 AM Club: Own Your Morning, Elevate Your Life by Robin Sharma
    Robin Sharma’s Perspective
Robin Sharma is considered one of the top 5 leadership experts worldwide. He is also the author of the bestselling books, The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari and Who Will Cry When You Die?. Sharma is admired by some of the world's most successful people. He has advised rock stars, royalty, billionaires, and famous CEOs. Sharma quit his career as a lawyer at the age of 25 to pursue stress management and spirituality.
Introduction to The 5 AM Club
The 5 AM Club offers advice on making your mornings the kickstart you need to attain your most remarkable achievements. Mornings are often a struggle for people. But Robin Sharma believes his formula can help anybody feel inspired and focused early in the morning. He also offers neuroscientific support for approaches that will help you rise far more quickly than the rest of society.
The 5 AM Club is a parable about genuine success. The kind of success that will turn you into a hero. Heroism may sound romantic, but it is possible for anyone to achieve it by embracing discomfort and working on daily habits for self-improvement. The first habit is to simply wake up at 5 a.m. and to use the first hour of your day to get ahead.
StoryShot #1: The Five Ground Rules
A key feature of your success will be effective preparation. So, Robin Sharma breaks this preparation down into five fundamentals you must consider:

An addiction to distraction is the end of your creative production. Empire makers and history creators take one hour for themselves before dawn. This time allows them to develop a synergy with opportunities that go beyond everyday complexity. They can then best prepare themselves for a world-class day.

Excuses do not breed moments of genius. Just because you haven’t installed the early-rising habit before doesn’t mean you cannot do it now. Release your rationalizations and remember that small daily improvements can lead to stunning results when done consistently over time.

All change is complicated at first, messy in the middle, and gorgeous at the end. Everything you now find easy, you first found complex. Consistently getting up early in the morning will soon become your new routine.

To get to the top 5%, you must start doing what 95% of people are unwilling to do. As you start to live like this, the majority will call you crazy. Remember that being labeled a freak is the price of greatness.

When you feel like surrendering, continue. More often than not, those who are relentless will succeed in the end.

Based on this success, Carnegie decided to create his own public speaking school. Public speaking courses based on his teaching methods are still influential today. Buffett is only one in a long list of successful people who give the author partial credit for their success.

Written by Darin Olien, a world-renowned expert on superfoods, the book explores these five areas in great detail. It also provides research-backed evidence of their effectiveness.

Superlife educates readers on good habits for nutrition, exercise, and disease prevention. By integrating these habits into their lives, readers can live healthy and disease-free lifestyles. A key principle that Olien emphasizes is that you need to take care of your body just like you would take care of a new Ferrari. Most people don’t appreciate good health and a well-functioning body when they have it. When they fall sick, they spend time and money trying to regain their health. However, this is avoidable. By incorporating Olien’s five forces into your lifestyle, you can provide your body with the fuel it needs to serve you effectively.
To help you integrate healthier habits into your life, we have synthesized some of the most important takeaways here. Tag us on social media and let us know which ones you agree or disagree with.

StoryShots Book Summary and Review of The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness by Jonathan Haidt

In this episode, we explore the critical issue of the mental health crisis affecting today's youth, often referred to as the "Anxious Generation." Drawing insights from social psychologist Jonathan Haidt's book "The Anxious Generation," we examine the factors contributing to the sharp rise in anxiety, depression, self-harm, and suicide among teenagers, particularly girls.
One of the key insights discussed is the impact of childhood mental health issues. The episode examines how the overuse of smartphones and social media platforms has had a profound effect on the well-being of young people. This shift has led to a concerning increase in mental health problems among teens.
Additionally, the discussion highlights how overprotective parenting and the lack of unstructured play have contributed to the erosion of resilience and self-regulation skills in today's youth.
To address this crisis, we propose implementing clear boundaries around technology use, passing legislation to create safer online spaces, and encouraging more independent exploration. By collectively addressing the root causes, we can work towards restoring a healthier childhood and fostering the well-being of the next generation.

StoryShots Summary and Analysis of The Doors of Perception by Aldous Huxley

    Introduction
Published in 1954, The Doors of Perception is about Aldous Huxley’s first psychedelic experience. The book is an account of his trip on Mescaline, the insights he experienced, and the esthetic beauty he saw. Huxley’s psychedelic experience helped him develop psychological and philosophical ideas around perception. He believed we live in a narrow field of perception. We need to open our minds to a broader perceptual experience to improve our lives. Because of his experience, Huxley recommended Mescaline to others.

Similar to Brave New World, The Doors of Perception also describes how we can break away from normal perception and uniquely experience the world.

Back in the 1930s, Huxley called Mescaline a poison worse than Soma. So it’s interesting to see how his perception of the drug changed within the 22 years of writing the two books.

“We live together, we act on, and react to, one another; but always and in all circumstances we are by ourselves. The martyrs go hand in hand into the arena; they are crucified alone. Embraced, the lovers desperately try to fuse their insulated ecstasies into a single self-transcendence; in vain. By its very nature every embodied spirit is doomed to suffer and enjoy in solitude. Sensations, feelings, insights, fancies—all these are private and, except through symbols and at second hand, incommunicable. We can pool information about experiences, but never the experiences themselves. From family to nation, every human group is a society of island universes.” — ALDOUS HUXLEY

StoryShots Summary of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change by Stephen Covey

Part I - Paradigms and Principles
    Introduction
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People challenges traditional self-help that encourages personality ethics, like image and attitude. Covey suggests that readers use a character ethic instead. A character ethic relies on timeless principles, like courage and integrity. To make this transition, you will have to go through what Covey calls a paradigm shift. An effective person has learned to make the paradigm shift from outside in to inside out. They have progressed along the growth continuum from dependence to independence and finally to interdependence. An effective person has also found the balance of production while increasing their capability to produce. To become an effective person, you have to encourage a paradigm shift in your worldview by adopting the seven habits of highly effective people.

The first three habits are habits of self-mastery, or private victories. These are:
    Be Proactive
Begin With the End in Mind
    Put First Things First

These three must come first. After adopting these habits, you can use the three habits of public victories. These three habits are built on interdependence. These are:

    Think Win-Win
Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
    Synergize

The last habit relies on continuous improvement and is key to the proper functioning and renewal of the first six. This habit is:

    Sharpen the Saw

    Part II - Private Victory

    Habit 1: Be Proactive
Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind
Habit 3: Put First Things First

    Criticism
Many people criticize Seven Habits of Highly Effective People for being vague and outdated. However, these were not problems with the original text, but rather with its followers. Covey and his work were revolutionary and many people did not comprehend the depth of the content in his book. He often gave speeches to follow up on his book’s ideas and would give more in-depth explanations to answer questions from his audience, who are often comprised of authors, journalists, entrepreneurs, business owners, marketers, educators and other professionals.

StoryShots Summary and Review of The Body Keeps The Score by Bessel Van der Kolk
    About Bessel Van der Kolk
Bessell Van der Kolk, MD, is a qualified psychiatrist. He specializes in the field of post-traumatic stress, which led him to write over 150 peer-reviewed scientific articles, the majority of them about post-traumatic stress. Van der Kolk, originally from the Netherlands, has also served as president of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies. He is currently a professor of psychiatry at Boston University School of Medicine.
    Introduction
The Body Keeps the Score is an innovative book by psychiatrist and trauma expert Van der Kolk. We all understand the effect that psychological trauma can have on individuals. Trauma can impact the way people perceive themselves and the world around them. Psychological trauma can have a lasting impact on the individual’s loved ones as well. In this book, Van der Kolk covers the intricacies of how trauma produces these effects by considering the neuroscience involved. Van der Kolk also presents ways neuroscience allows us to produce new, effective treatments for psychological trauma survivors. Examples of these approaches include eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, yoga, and limbic system therapy. Van der Kolk guides us through these modern therapies by recalling his career and the patients he has seen. So this book also serves as a history of the mental health field of the last 30 years.
After learning these storyshots, you will better understand how our brains react to and deal with psychological trauma. What Van der Kolk recommends is helping survivors of psychological trauma to recover.
StoryShot #1: Antidepressants Ruined Mental Health Support
Van der Kolk describes how he and other researchers/therapists were so excited when antidepressants were first introduced. He now believes that our overuse of these medications has led us to treat mental illness as a disease. Unfortunately, this approach means that the following things have been removed from mental health support:

The belief that we can heal each other in the same way we can destroy each other

Language that is critical to providing us with the power to change circumstances

Controlling our physiology by using breathing, moving, and touching techniques, rather than by resorting to medication

An inclination to change social conditions so that people feel safer and are then able to thrive

StoryShots Book Summary and Review of How to Change Your Mind: What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us About Consciousness, Dying, Addiction, Depression, and Transcendence by Michael Pollan
    Introduction
What do you think when someone mentions the word ‘psychedelics’? Do you imagine a world of fantasy and irony? Or do you get skeptical immediately?
Psychedelics have been cast under that kind of light. This bleak light comes from decades of hysteria, negative reviews and punitive legislation. However, that's not how the story has always been.
The author of the book, Michael Pollan, was born too late to partake in the acid trips that Woodstock is famous for. He was also young enough to get a taste. This was before the mass hysteria and legislation cast an image of psychedelics as the devil's agents.
Pollan’s journey begins with a paper he had ignored earlier. It led him to take a deeper look into the scientific study of the effects of psychedelics.
The meat of this book starts when the study of psychedelics and their uses was highly condemned. At the time, Pollan decided to gather first-hand experience of their usage. While he had put little thought into such substances and their effects, this was a chance to satisfy his curiosity.
“One good way to understand a complex system is to disturb it and then see what happens.” - Michael Pollan
How to Change your Mind is an inspired look into the effects psychedelics have on the mind. The exploits back up the mystical experiences of those who took psilocybin in a controlled test. These experiences increased Pollan's interest in the subject.
    About Michael Pollan
Michael Pollan is a storied journalist whose work has covered periphery topics that many don't think about or find absurd.
Even then, his insights are eye-opening in most cases. His recent book, This Is Your Mind On Plants, is a remarkable collection of such insights.
Although Pollan's roots are in journalism, his fame grew through his books. Pollan is also a Knight Professor at the UC Berkeley School of Journalism and writes articles on science and the environment.
Pollan has earned both accolades and criticisms from scientists, therapists, and medical professionals. Most notably in 2015, he was a recipient of the Washburn Award.

    Introduction

Do you want a long and healthy life? Making the right choices today can make a big difference in the years ahead.

The vast majority of premature deaths can be prevented through simple changes in diet and lifestyle. How Not to Die examines the top causes of death in America. When it comes to tackling these key causes of death, nutritional and lifestyle interventions can sometimes trump prescription pills and other pharmaceutical and surgical approaches. Peer-reviewed academic studies support each of Dr. Greger’s approaches. The overwhelming conclusion is that a whole food plant-based diet is the most effective ‘treatment’ to prevent and cure America's biggest killers.

You may be used to hearing that you should avoid eating certain foods. The common link between the most harmful foods is that they are animal products. Here you can find out why they are so damaging to your health. What you may not realize is that many foods are actively beneficial and some can help prevent and even treat killer diseases. Learn what to eat and what to avoid to give yourself the best chance of a long life. Other lifestyle changes, like regular exercise and stopping smoking, can help you on your way.

“I opened my eyes to the depressing fact that there are other forces at work in medicine besides science. The U.S. healthcare system runs on a fee-for-service model in which doctors get paid for the pills and procedures they prescribe, rewarding quantity over quality. We don’t get reimbursed for time spent counseling our patients about the benefits of healthy eating. If doctors were instead paid for performance, there would be a financial incentive to treat the lifestyle causes of disease. Until the model of reimbursement changes, I don’t expect great changes in medical care or medical education.” – Dr. Michael Greger
