Dogs are often described as "man's best friend" because of their close bond with humans—and it seems there could be some truth to the saying. A study has found that dog owners rate the connection they have with their pet as more satisfying than most relationships they have with other humans.

HOPE HEALS
A study shows that being hopeful can reduce pain and make you feel better faster.
Being hopeful boosts your confidence
Things might seem hard sometimes but there is always a way through. Being hopeful and trying not to give up makes it easier to face challenges and solve problems.
What does being hopeful mean?
Have you heard the saying “the glass is half full”? This means looking at the good things in a situation, rather than thinking “the glass is half empty”. It gives you the power to keep trying when facing everyday challenges, like managing friendships and staying on top of school work.
It’s not always easy to be cheerful and positive and it’s natural to feel worried, angry or sad sometimes. However, being hopeful makes you feel more confident and happy, and it can help you overcome things you are worrying about.
How is it good for me?
Studies show that having a positive outlook makes you feel happier, less stressed and helps you sleep better. It’s been found to boost your physical health because you’re more likely to be more active. Researchers have found that when you believe problems can be solved you’re less likely to feel stressed about them, which also helps you overcome challenges. When you’re rehearsing for a school play or music concert, believing things will go well makes you calmer, which improves your performance.
How can I be more positive?
It’s not always easy to believe things will be ok. Being positive isn’t a feeling we can just switch on, but there are steps we can take to try.
Michele Borba is a psychologist (an expert in thoughts and feelings) and author. She recommends catching negative thoughts before they become a habit. “Words have great power,” Borba says, so develop an upbeat saying like “I can do this”, or “There’s always tomorrow.” Another way is to read hopeful news. Look out for inspiring stories in The Week Junior or ask an adult to help you find good sources online. You can practise being positive by celebrating the little things, says Borba. “Recognising even a small success boosts hope,” she explains.

Life is always changing. Sometimes that's great but at other
times it can make us feel unsure and worried. There are
lots of benefits in embracing the unexpected - and simple
things you can do to make it easier to deal with life changes.
What Are Life Changes?
There can be lots of new things that happen in your life. Some can be really positive things that you make happen yourself, like joining a club or making a new friend. However, some changes you face could make you feel worried or uncertain. They can be big things like moving schools, a friend going away or family life changing because of parents separating. They can be smaller ones like new schedules at home due to parents’ or carers’ working patterns or a teacher you don’t know taking over your class. All of these things can bring up some pretty big feelings – and that’s ok.
Why Can It Be Hard to Deal With?
Change can be tricky because it often brings feelings of uncertainty. Emily Hanlon is a child psychologist (someone who studies how children think, feel and behave) who explains, “Our brains love patterns and routines. They make us feel safe. When something changes, like starting a new school or moving to a new home, it can feel like stepping into the unknown. It’s like going on a surprise adventure without a map. This can make us feel nervous or worried because we don’t know what to expect.” Change can also be hard if you don’t feel quite ready for it or that you are not in control of whatever is happening.
Can change be a good thing?
Yes – life would be pretty boring if everything stayed the same all the time. Trying new things and making changes helps you discover what you like – and don’t like. For example, if you didn’t try that new flavour of ice cream, how would you have known you love it? It also helps you to grow and learn skills. Hanlon says, “While change can feel scary, it often leads to new adventures, new friends, and new superpowers – ok, maybe not laser vision, but definitely resilience and confidence.”

接着上次的正文,来看看"The wheel of feelings"和“Notice how your brain and body connect”这两个版块。
The wheel of feelings
图片
Take a moment to notice any sensations in your body right now. Is your breathing fast or slow or somewhere in between? Does your mind seem busy with thoughts or is it focused on what you’re reading? These are all signals from your body and brain that tell you how you’re feeling.
Notice how your brain and body connect
图片
Think of something or someone that makes you happy – a friend, a pet, a type of food or activity. Notice if your facial expressions change, how your shoulders feel and the sensations in your chest and stomach. Are your inhales long or short? Now, ask yourself, “What was I feeling?” Repeat the activity by thinking of an incident that scared or upset you. Next time you notice any of those patterns in your body and breath, you’ll understand what you’re feeling.

Recognising your emotions
can help you make good choices.
选自19 October 2024 - 《The Week Junior》- Wellbeing中的《 Know your feelings 》
Emotional awareness
Take a moment to notice any sensations in your body right now. Is your breathing fast or slow or somewhere in between? Does your mind seem busy with thoughts or is it focused on what you’re reading? These are all signals from your body and brain that tell you how you’re feeling.
Where do feelings come from?
“Feelings start in our brains and also exist in our bodies,” says Ekta Hattangady, who is a counsellor (someone who helps people with their problems through talking). Hattangady explains how different feelings exist in the body. “When we are happy or find something funny, we smile. When someone jumps and surprises us, our throat or chest might feel tight. When we are scared, our breathing might become shallow,” she says.
Why do feelings matter?
Hattangady explains that feelings are important because they give clues about what you need. If you’re angry, it might mean something is unfair and you need help to fix it.If you’re sad, this could mean you need comforting or time to heal. Being able to name your feelings is called emotional awareness. It’s a key part of growing up and can help you to talk about what you feel, which can make it easier to get the help you might need to figure things out and move on.
Emotions are messengers
Maybe you’ve seen the film Inside Out 2. The characters in 13-year-old Riley’s brain represent her emotions. They each take over her brain as she goes through big life changes. We see joy, fear and sadness play up when Riley goes to a new high school and when she worries about losing her friends. Riley learns to understand that all feelings are normal and natural responses to different situations, and they all have an important role to play.
Try to make it a habit to notice how you feel throughout your day or week in different situations. Hattangady says, “Feelings don’t last forever – they come and go – so learning to notice them without letting them take over helps us stay calm and make good choices.”

A beautiful fable about the nature
of love, from beloved, award-
winning picture book creators
Mac Barnett and Carson Ellis.
"What is love?"
a young boy asks.
"I can't answer that,"
his grandmother says,
and so the boy goes out
into the world to find out.
But while each person he meets
—the fisherman, the actor, and others
—has an answer to his question,
not one seems quite right.
Could love really be a fish,
or applause, or the night?
Or could it actually be
something much closer to home?
This tender, funny tale
is an original take on the “I love you" story,
a picture book treasure
for all ages to read and cherish.
A CLASSIC LOVE STORY:
A wonderful narrative voice
and spectacular pictures
give this book
the feel of a modern classic.
Fans of The Runaway Bunny,
Guess How Much I LoveYou,
and Love You Forever
will adore this book.
ENJOY:
Many books about the love
between parents and children
are told from an adult's point of view.
This book begins
from the child'sperspective,
and it's funny and unexpected
in ways that children can relate to,
while being thoughtful in ways
that adults will appreciate.
Like all great children's books,
this book can be understood
on many levels.
A BOOK ABOUT FINDING YOURSELF:
Theboy's journey takes him
to many different people,
whose descriptions of
what love means to them
is very much about
how they see themselves
and their lives.
