Spencer Pratt was reality television's first fully self-aware villain — a man who admitted, on camera, that he was performing villainy for an audience. He staged a fake divorce, manipulated storylines, and turned being unlikeable into a career. The Hills did make him famous. It also made him a case study in how American media rewards people who understand that the camera is on and someone's watching.
He knew the game before most people knew there was a game.
There wasn't much to report recently, and then his house burned down in the Palisades fire, and something unexpected happened: Spencer Pratt got real. He showed up to protests. He got angry on behalf of his neighbors. He announced a mayoral campaign at the one-year anniversary of the fires... and people didn't laugh him out of the room. He is currently polling at 22%, just behind incumbent Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, and is a legitimate threat to make the runoff.
The man who was professionally fake is now genuinely running to lead a real city.
The joke of Spencer Pratt running for mayor only works if Spencer Pratt is the punchline. But the longer you look at it, the more you realize the punchline might be us. We built the machine that made him. We watched The Hills. We rewarded performance over substance for two decades and then expressed shock when a performer showed up with a policy platform. Spencer Pratt didn't corrupt American politics. He just followed the incentives, a map we drew for him.
This week on DINGUS OF THE WEEK, LYZ LENZ and ZACHARY OREN SMITH follow Spencer Pratt from The Hills to City Hall and find the view from both places is equally bleak.
DINGUS OF THE WEEK is a weekly comedy news podcast where writers Lyz and Zach light a fire under the American rogue's gallery to see who comes spilling out. While Washington melted down over government shutdowns, SNAP benefits, and the Epstein files, one 87-year-old writer took a sledgehammer to the ego of the richest man alive. Joyce Carol Oates has written 58 novels, a number of plays, and the tombstone epitaph for out-of-touch billionaire Elon Musk.
"So curious that such a wealthy man never posts anything that indicates that he enjoys or is even aware of what virtually everyone appreciates..." Oates tweeted, going on to name those basic joys of life. "The poorest persons on Twitter may have access to more beauty & meaning in life than the 'most wealthy person in the world.'"
Musk of course answered this was the examination of the richness of his intellect and soul... just kidding.
He tweeted, "Everything she says in her post about me can be shown to be demonstrably false with a simple search. Oates is a lazy liar and ... an abuser of semicolons!" In a later tweet: "Oates is a liar and delights in being mean. Not a good human."
On this episode of Dingus of the Week, hosts LYZ LENZ and ZACHARY OREN SMITH play that time-tested American game "Dingus Defense League" where the dingus of one week becomes the unlikely---and let's face it, still annoying---hero of the next.

Born from a Japanese tech arms race and immortalized in Fred Benenson’s 2009 masterwork “Emoji Dick,” the emoji has become a staple of the way we communicate. Such that the Oxford dictionary named the cry-laugh emoji its word of the year in 2015. Whether you’d like to convey complex feelings such as “pweeeese” or embellish the end of a dry text message, it’s rare that these little symbols would not make at least one appearance in our daily text conversations. And, like most internet artifacts, early adopters of the emoji believed it had the potential to completely collapse the barriers of language and finally realize McLuhan’s predictions of a “global village.” But is that really so? In this finale episode Hannah and Maia discuss the history of the emoji and all its supposed utopian potential. Tangents include: the unasked-for details of Hannah and Maia’s long-awaited reunion, Canadian mennonite literature, and Hannah’s own personal version of the internet, the Web 1.5.

Clavicular. The James Joyce of incel forums. The icarus of looksmaxxing. The Truman Burbank of Kick. The sleep paralysis bouncer of every fifteen year old’s dreams. The sex symbol of 2026? Welcome back to another season of sex on the internet, where Hannah and Maia issue a formal apology for being the nth cultural critics to try a definitive take on the least compelling man of the hour. Clavicular became a media darling after singing Kanye’s “Heil H*tler” at the club, intentionally hitting a man with his cybertruck, yelling the n word into restaurants, and doing the rounds at NYFF. But what he really wants to be known for are his extreme beauty practices, so gender affirming in nature he may have closed the circle on misogyny - the walking answer to: “fellas, is it gay to f*ck a woman?” As Clavicular ascends into his desired state as a hard bodied Chad but nihilistically neuters himself in the process, has he finally realized RS Benedict’s thesis: everyone is beautiful, and no one is horny? Tangents include: Lindy West and the polycule from hell, and SNL as the Vegas residency of comedy.

It didn’t seem possible, but Britain has finally found a woman more reviled than Queen Camila Parker Bowles. With the face of a Love Island contestant and the business savvy of PT Burnam, OnlyFans creator Bonnie Blue drives around England in a blue van and beckons barely legal virgins to bang her on camera. On top of banging virgins, banging virgins and their dads, in 2025 she also set out to break a mind melting record of sleeping with 1000 men in 24 hours. She succeeded. In this episode, Hannah and Maia discuss the backlash surrounding Bonnie Blue, and whether she really is stretching parasociality to its logical limits, or reflecting our own hypocrisy back to us with a rather sophisticated brand of ragebait. As hundreds of men in shiesties cue up for their thirty seconds of fame, one has to ask whether Bonnie has created an entirely new specimen: the sex hype beast. Better yet, is Bonnie Blue the Mr. Beast of sex work? Tangents include: Lena Dunham’s new memoir and Australian bus memes.

Think cancel culture is new? The Catholic Church invented it in the Middle Ages.
Being burned at the stake was the ultimate deplatforming. In the 15th and 16th centuries, figures like Joan of Arc, Giordano Bruno, and Jan Hus faced the stake for the crime of heresy. But was heresy actually just a way to crush dissent?
This week, medievalist and historian Eleanor Janega (@GoingMedieval) joins Katelyn and Christine to unpack history’s original cancel culture. From the Vatican's "Community Guidelines" to the trial of Galileo, we look at how institutions have always used moral panic to maintain power.

“Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling’s trans persecution feeds off her vast fortune. Rowling uses her estimated $1.2 billion net worth to directly fund anti-trans causes.
As executive producer of the upcoming Harry Potter HBO show, Rowling will make even more money that she can funnel into what she calls “women's and girls' sex-based rights.”
Early media criticism of the Harry Potter reboot is just starting to contend with Rowling’s commitment to erasing trans people from public life.
This week, Jessie Gender returns to the podcast to discuss HBO’s Harry Potter show with Katelyn and Christine. The three discuss the shortcomings of nostalgia with the HBO reboot and how media criticism must include J.K. Rowling’s trans obsession. It is not possible to separate this artist from her art.
