  • Gary is joined by his former England teammate Terry Butcher to discuss his powerful new documentary, Butcher: Invisible Wounds. Terry opens up about the devastating loss of his son, Chris, and explains how sharing his story in the documentary has helped him cope with his grief and continue the healing process.

The pair also look back on Terry's remarkable football career, from the glory years at Ipswich Town and Rangers to his unforgettable experiences with England. They revisit some of the most iconic moments in English football history, including the infamous "Hand of God" match against Argentina, the Italia '90 World Cup campaign that saw England come closer than any side since 1966 to lifting the trophy and Terry's legendary blood-soaked performance against Sweden that became one of the game's most enduring images.

Butcher: Invisible Wounds airs on ITV4 on Tuesday 9 June at 10pm.

  • Are Gen-Z filmmakers like Kane Parsons the new kings of Hollywood? Has Tom Hardy really been fired from the set of Mobland for upsetting Helen Mirren? And why is the author of the year’s biggest memoir facing a backlash from readers?

YouTube native Kane Parsons has smashed box office expectations with his A24 horror film, Backrooms - becoming the youngest filmmaker to open at No 1 in the US. Richard Osman and Marina Hyde discuss the success of low-budget horror and the YouTube-to-cinema pipeline.

Speculation is mounting that Tom Hardy has been axed from hit crime drama Mobland, after clashes with the creators and British acting royalty. But are the rumours true? And how often do stars actually get fired?

Belle Burden’s bestselling marriage memoir, Strangers, has drawn fierce criticism after claims she exaggerated her financial ruin. Has the publishing industry’s hunger for ‘true’ stories broken the modern memoir?

  • Hot Chip is a band from London made up of Alexis Taylor, Joe Goddard, Al Doyle, Owen Clarke, and Felix Martin. Their second album, The Warning, came out in 2006. It was nominated for a Mercury Prize, and named one of the best albums of the year by NME and Pitchfork. And later, NME would include it in their list of best albums of all time. For this episode, I talked to them about one of the songs from The Warning called “Boy From School.” You might have heard it in the second season of the show Beef on Netflix—the band’s also in the show—or you might have heard it on The Simpsons. You could have also heard the song in my car all the time in 2006. So I was very excited to talk to Alexis and Joe from Hot Chip about how “Boy from School” was made.

  • The Late Show With Stephen Colbert comes to an end this week amid a lot of changes in the business and the country. Some of the sources of tension include the economics of late night, the approaching merger of Paramount and Warner Brothers, and President Donald Trump's constant criticism of late-night hosts. But for Colbert's fans, it's the end of a friendly, funny, candid show. So we’re talking about the legacy of Stephen Colbert in late night.

  • This week, Emily Bazelon, John Dickerson, and David Plotz discuss whether Trump will be willing to endure the political pain if his capricious Iran war causes gas to hit $5 a gallon, the system of ICE mega-prisons DHS is starting to build, and new fronts in Trump’s efforts to control the 2026 elections and beyond.

For this week’s Slate Plus bonus episode, Emily, John, and David discuss last weekend’s attempted bomb attack in front of Gracie Mansion in NYC, and how it somehow managed to be a terrorism story, a protest story, and a media story all in one.

In the latest Gabfest Reads, John Dickerson talks with Father James Martin about his new book, Work in Progress: Confessions of a Busboy, Dishwasher, Caddy, Usher, Factory Worker, Bank Teller, Corporate Tool, and Priest. They discuss the spiritual lessons learned through eight different jobs, Martin’s controversial LGBTQ ministry that made him a target of criticism within the Catholic Church, and what the Gospels demand about welcoming strangers and caring for the marginalized.
