  • Sam Coates took to techno like a diligent pupil, falling in love with the genre through labels like CLR in the late '00s. It didn't take long for the student to surpass his proverbial teachers. Almost immediately, the Manchester native was putting out pitch-perfect, functional techno records with everything intricately balanced. The requisite move to Berlin only sealed his fate as a future techno luminary, and by now, based in Kyiv, he's one of techno's most reliable, yet exciting, workhorses. Setaoc Mass records (and those on his label, SK_eleven) are minimalist but colossal, deceptively simple but not easy to pull off.

We've praised him in these pages for his "sense of economy—how to get the hardest impact out of just a few elements," and that's the idea behind his RA Podcast as well. Put together from records old and new, and intricately layered, Coates's mix is like a time-travelling wormhole connecting disparate eras from techno, and highlighting the genre's most timeless attributes: mechanistic rhythms, careful pacing, rudimentary melodies made out of the strangest sounds and, of course, the power of the bass drop. It's hard to imagine anything that sounds more capital-T techno than this mix, which is a high compliment. It's easy to hear why his records and DJ sets are only more in demand from techno heads across the geographical and generational spectrum.

  • Wave Arising (@wavearising) aka @69db aka Sebastian Vaughan has lived through many musical movements from hip hop to acid house, rave to hardcore. He began making his own as a drummer and drums remain at the heart of his weightless techno sounds all these years later. That was exemplified once more by his most recent album which is an exercise in rhythm that works equally on mind, body and soul. He has long been a part of several key techno collectives including Spiral Tribe, SP23, R-Zac and Dharma Techno and seeks to bring movement, trance and spirituality to the weightless sounds he makes and plays as Wave Arising alongside the dancer Kynsie.

This week he has put together a special live mix that has been fully improvised in the studio as opposed to a standard DJ selection. It comes ahead of his performance as 69db at Dekmantel Festival this year and is a perfect example of the intense and ritualistic music he makes: it's a tribal soundscape constructed from supple, elongated and heavy rhythms, spaced-out ambient pads and experimental dub movements that are all doused in psychedelic overtones which consumes all your focus.

  • After numerous compilation appearances, the first half of 2018 saw object blue put out her first two solo EPs—‘Do you plan to end a siege?' on Tobago Tracks and 'REX' on Let’s Go Swimming.’ Their impact, next to her spellbinding live shows, was so significant that by the end of the year she was one of the most talked about new artists around. The reason is that the Chinese sound designer contorts her drum machines and smudges her synths with utter disregard for any rules and lands somewhere fresh and new; some grey area between broken techno, warped bass and experimental club.

A sonic meticulousness always manages to shine through object blue’s work, despite what can often be carnage beneath the surface. And that’s the case with the one hour session we end the year with here: it’s a symphony of layers that variously sooth and seduce or rough you up with rhythm. Despite the shades of sound art and musical collage that are never far away, a dance floor narrative underlines the whole thing and will keep you moving well into 2019, a year which promises plenty for object blue.

  • We are glad to share with you the highly-interesting downtempo selection from @elysiabsl's resident @garcon, recorded at this year's @parallelfestival.

  • Amsterdam's @zohar01 operates from the shadows. Though she has a reputation for mysteriousness, there is no escaping the earth-rattling rhythms she lays down in the DJ booth. Leftfield electronics, distorted vocals and industrial sounds with 90s roots all feature in her sets as well as productions on the likes of Clone and her own DIY Zohar label. This month she dropped the second entry in her highly personal ZHR series in the form of her Object album, a mix of sound experiments, glitchy textures and abstract rhythms.

This week's mix is full of similar sonic sorcery and musical black magic. Squealing electronics and fizzing textures evoke feelings of dystopia as crunching drums come and go but the tension is never let up. There are moments of eye-watering density but, just as often, empty spaces leave you hanging before the next thrilling rhythm arrives and takes you somewhere new. Brain and body music rarely collide in such a unique fashion.

  • Francesco De Luca, also known as Deluka, is an Italian DJ, producer and the founder of the Berlin-based record label, No Signal Records. His style is a unique blend of groovy textures and hypnotic elements, resulting in pulsating rhythms and captivating patterns in both his mixes and productions.

Originally from Naples, his musical journey began at a young age with a love for house records and turntables. Over time, he was drawn to the captivating sounds of techno, taking inspiration from legends like Jeff Mills and Robert Hood, eventually adopting the alias Deluka.

In 2011, he moved to Berlin. As Francesco De Luca, he spent several years as a resident DJ at prestigious venues like Chalet and OHM's Same Bitches Party. In 2018, he made his mark in the techno scene with debut releases on the labels Estetika and 4TRKS, curated by DJ Hyperactive. Transitioning to his techno project as Deluka, he established No Signal Records through the release of the EP "Echos" in 2021. Since then, the label has released 8 EPs, collaborating with acclaimed artists like Amotik and Orbe.

Additionally, No Signal Records has expanded into a physical store located in the Friedrichshain neighborhood.

Driven by a relentless dedication to exploring and pushing boundaries, Deluka persistently experiments and refines his mixing technique and productions. His groundbreaking music has graced esteemed labels such as AMOTIK+, KSR, Future Architecture and SK11 reinforcing his reputation as a pioneering figure in the techno scene, alongside his emotional and intriguing DJ sets.

  • Beste Hira is an adventurous, strong-willed and motivated DJ and Producer living in
Amsterdam, originally from Istanbul. Her character traits, combined with her creativity and
discipline, define her as a unique talent. Music has been a huge priority her whole life: she
focused her entire high school and university path on it, most specifically with the cello and
piano as her main instruments. She graduated from Ondokuz Mayıs University with a degree in
Music Education / Conservatory. During the early days of her career, she started producing and
DJing in Istanbul before she decided to move to Amsterdam in 2019 to pursue her vocation as
    a techno talent.

Within electronic music, Beste Hira identifies with the hypnotic, fast paced and dark side of
techno. Her extensive musical training can be heard throughout her music production and DJ
sets, where she meticulously experiments with sounds to produce her signature, and, most
importantly, having an incredibly accurate intuition allows her to play out of her comfort zone
and surprise some of the most challenging crowds.

Beste Hira enjoys creating a full sensory experience in her performances, which results in
captivating journeys from beginning to end. Her knowledge and experience as an artist have
allowed her to grow in Amsterdam's eclectic underground scene, supported by key
Amsterdam-based crews such as Awakenings, Vault Sessions, DeSchool, Amsterdam Open Air,
909 and many more. Beste's presence in Europe is growing rapidly, especially after becoming a
regular at the mighty Berghain and other top notch clubs in capitals like Vienna, Madrid and
    Paris.

Creating podcasts for communities based in Miami, Mexico, the UK, Europe and Turkey has
allowed Beste's voice to reach global audiences and has continually shaped her growth as an
artist. Cos, the first EP she released on her own, allowed her to break through the scene and
opened doors for her debut at the renowned underground Schimmer Records. She's got a lot
more coming up, including projects that integrate her classical background.

  • Swiss producer and DJ NVST (@ghettonast) likes to shock her crowd. She thrives on clashing sounds, scenes, genres and textures into uncomfortable new worlds, all of which is a result of coming up from the illegal party scene in her homeland. She works hard to develop and preserve that native scene in many different ways: she is part of the Female:Pressure family, co-runs the French label Big Science and holds down residencies on LYLRadio and Rinse FM.

This week's mix was recorded in Le Bourg, a club in Lausanne that NVST tells us has recently been taken over and is working hard to bring something fresh to the scene. The mix is filled with unreleased tracks from NVST's favourite artists and forthcoming tunes from labels like Big Science, Kindergatern and moshtrq next to some of her all-time favourites. It opens with a collage that includes Tamika D. Mallory's 'State of Emergency' speech of which she says "I remember the first time I heard it so accurately; I knew I should include it symbolically as well because it resonates so much with me."

  • Bill Kouligas is the mind behind one of modern electronic music's greatest and most innovative labels, PAN. His remarkable ear for music meant that he released some of the earliest records from luminaries like Yves Tumor, Helena Hauff and Eartheater, helping to jumpstart several remarkable careers. And each PAN release is lovingly and lavishly packaged like an art object in itself, an approach you can read more about in this month's feature-length cover story.

The Berlin artist's RA Podcast is an audio companion to that cover story, and it underlines not only Kouligas's range as a label A&R but also as a DJ. Reflecting the label's evolution from straight-up noise to musique concréte to leftfield dance music and then avant-pop, the mix cycles through stages of strange, staggered beats, almost celestial ambient music, passages of overwhelming noise and sound that sublimate into floating clouds before solidifying back into club music, and a couple engaging spoken word passages and endless manipulations of the human voice. In other words, it sounds a lot like PAN.
