באפריל 1983 נעלמו 106 פריטים מאוסף השעונים השלישי בשוויו בעולם, ששכן - באופן מפתיע - במוזיאון קטן בירושלים: המוזיאון לאמנות האיסלאם. שווי השלל שנגנב: כרבע מיליארד דולר. מדובר בשוד האמנות הגדול ביותר שידעה המדינה, והחקירה נפתחה במרץ. זירת הפשע לא היתה שגרתית, בלשון המעטה: בחלל בו שכן האוסף הושארו פחיות משקה ריקות, שאריות סנדוויצ'ים, וניכר שמי שעמד מאחורי הפריצה שהה שם שעות ארוכות. אבל למרות "הזירה המלוכלכת", כפי שמכנים זירות מסוג זה במשטרה, החקירה הולכת ומסתבכת - ויחלפו שנים ארוכות עד שיישפך אור על הפרשה. אז מי עמד מאחורי שוד השעונים?
