It's casual Good Friday, and oh what a week it's been. Emma breaks down Senator Chris Van Hollen's meeting with his constituent Kilmar Abrego Garcia who was wrongfully deported to El Salvador, as well as the way the White House and Bukele are trying to spin it.
After that, Emma speaks with the new chairman of the House Progressive Caucus Rep. Greg Casar (D-TX), who shares his vision for how the Democratic Party can push back on Trump's draconian immigration crackdown, as well as providing a more positive vision for a forward-looking immigration program of their own. Emma also asks Casar about what conversations are taking place within the House Progressive Caucus about the disconnection between the Democratic Party at large and its constituents on Gaza. Casar also talks about his experience on the Fight the Oligarchy tour with Bernie & AOC, and his desire to make sure the federal government is rid of Elon Musk by May.
After that, Emma is joined by Some More News' Cody Johnston, to talk about what is happening (or not happening) to counter the Trump administration's full-court blitz. David Hogg and Chris Cuomo take shots at Bernie, AOC and DNC co-chair David Hogg for "taking a page from the MAGA playbook." Carvel even suggests that he might try to sue Hogg for saying that he's going to support primary campaigns against incumbent Democrats. They also marvel at Jair Bolsonaro's latest edition of shirtless hospital selfies.

MarkAlain expresses his concern that essential programs that receive federal funding could now be in jeopardy, especially those that cater to marginalized communities, especially undocumented people.
In the Fun Half, Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton are here to break down the video of Republican senator Chuck Grassley getting yelled at by his constituents at a town hall over the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia. The group talks about how entrenched some of the support for Trump is among his base, even when his policies cost them their jobs. They also discuss how the attention on the Abrego Garcia is a moment when Democrats need to keep their foot on the gas and show voters that they are willing and able to fight for justice.

It's a Newsday Tuesday with Emma on the mic. She recaps the chilling spectacle that was the Bukele-Trump Oval Office meeting / press availability, including the Kafkaesque exchange over the wrongfully deported Maryland father Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia. As Emma explains, despite the Supreme Court's ruling that the administration must make an effort to bring Abrego Garcia home, the Trump administration and and El Salvador's crypto-strong man both claim to be unable to abide by the ruling out of deference to one another.
Emma then talks to Annelle Sheline, a research fellow in the Quincy Institute’s Middle East program who's latest paper focuses on the U.S.'s prioritization of weapons sales over human rights. Annelle gets into some of the thinking of her state department colleagues over this issue, which she finds to be rooted in outdated American exceptionalism. The hypocrisy is particularly noteworthy when it comes to Israel, despite growing public sentiment against Israel's destruction of Gaza and perpetual subjugation of the Palestinian people.

It's Monday, the first day of an Emma-jority week, so buckle up!
First, Emma breaks down the latest tariff chaos, with Howard Lutnik and Peter Navarro singing different tunes in explaining why goods like computers, cell phones and the much coveted chips are being exempted from the tariffs. But Navarro doesn't want you tall them exemptions though just FYI.
After that, Salvadoran-American author, activist and educator Roberto Lovato joins Emma here to give us some context to Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele's visit to Washington. During his meeting with Trump, Bukele makes it clear that he doesn't plan to return Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, despite that the Trump administration has already admitted he was sent to a prison in El Salvador due to an administrative error and that SCOTUS already ordered the Trump administration to make an effort to bring him Abrego Garcia home. Roberto helps contextualize this horrifying new dystopia in history of U.S. - Salvadoran relations. As Roberto points out, Bukele's rise and relationship with Trump is a sign not just of the U.S.'s impact on the Central American country but also visa versa.

It's Casual Friday (relatively speaking), and Sam and Emma start the show with some glimmers of good news on the immigration front, following the Supreme Court's ruling that the Trump administration must make an attempt to bring home Kilmar Armando Ábrego García. The government already admitted they deported Garcia to a maximum security prison in El Salvador because of an administrative error. Sean McGarvey, the president of the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers where Garcia is a member, has demanded he be brought home.
Sam and Emma are then joined by The Nation's national affairs correspondent Jeet Heer to break down the implications of Trump's chaotic tariff policy, which is accelerating de-dollarization, including among the U.S.'s most (normally) steadfast allies. They also break down the warped logic of Trump's immigration crackdown, including the weaponization of the immigration system for the sake of Israel. Jeet makes the point that both Democrats and Republicans have participated in the weaponization of faux concerns about antisemitism which has brought us to this moment. Paris Marx then gets right into the wonderful revelations in Tesla’s quarterly earnings report, walking through the devastating drop in sales amid mass recalls, a diversifying EV market, and overwhelming global backlash to the fascist politics of Elon Musk. Marx then tackles the particular failures of Tesla’s *ONLY* new major model release in recent years with the Cybertruck, and how it represents the greater issue of allowing a deranged billionaire to make outrageous promises completely detached from the material reality of both his company and modern technology, before shifting to the explosive impact Chinese products are currently having on the EV market, with BYD proving clear affordability and profitability even in European markets, developments that are all in line with America’s dwindling role as a global economic leader. First, they run through updates on the victory by liberal Susan Crawford in the Wisconsin Supreme Court race, Democrats’ growing margins in deep-red regions, Trump’s tariff fears, the GOP’s anger at proxy voting for new parents, Mike Waltz Gmail whoopsie, Senator Cory Booker’s marathon filibuster, the closure of free measles vaccine clinics in Texas amid a breakout, Ed Martin nomination for D.C. U.S. Attorney, Tesla’s tanking earnings, and the Senate GOP’s budget reconciliation, before expanding on the beautiful revelations around the toxicity of Elon Musk in US politics as seen in the incredible leftward swing amid his intense campaigning for conservative Brad Schimel Wisconsin. Sam and Emma are joined by Rachel Cohen, lawyer formerly of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, to discuss the country’s largest law firms bending the knee to Donald Trump. First, they run through updates on today’s elections in Wisconsin and Florida, Trump’s attack on the US public health regime, tomorrow’s tariff deadline, the Senate GOP’s budgetary sleight of hand, legal pushback to Trump over voting restrictions and his reclassification of protected Venezuelan migrants, Trump’s ongoing renditioning of Latin Americans to an El Salvadorian gulag, the mobilization of far-right militia’s to protect Musk’s businesses, Trump’s targeting of Harvard, Cory Booker’s filibuster, and dwindling Canadian tourism to the US, also watching Jesse Watters explain exactly why he (and the rest of the right) doesn’t care about due process. Rachel Cohen then dives Trump’s successful effort to cow some of the biggest law firms in the US – including her former firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom – unpacking precisely what makes these law firms so “important” to Trump (wealthy clients, billions in profits), and the intimate relationship they have with the political elite, before walking through the actual contents of Trump’s threats to these firms’ contracts and access to federal buildings (e.g. courts), and why, unlike others, Skadden seemed to capitulate without even facing an Executive Order, including handing over $100m in pro-bono work to the administration. Expanding on this latter element, Cohen tackles the Trump Administration’s underlying aims for this authoritarian push against these attorneys elite, with the push against DEI policies, the takeover of pro-bono work, and the Executive Orders chilling pushback to Trump’s anti-migrant and anti-trans agenda coming at a time where he and his goons are undercutting due process for migrants and criminalizing trans identity. After touching on the mix of hubris and cowardice driving the executive capitulation in the world of corporate law, and what the internal pushback looks like among Cohen’s peers, Rachel, Sam, and Emma wrap up by reemphasizing the real goal of Trump’s project – a fascist takeover – and the importance of organized dissent.

Dave Weigel then joins, reflecting on the rapid radicalization of the race for the last seat Wisconsin Supreme Court since the injection of over $20 million of Elon Musk’s money, going from the culmination of a decade-long battle by Wisconsin Democrats to break down the GOP gerrymander to a full-scale (in Elon’s words) battle for the “future of civilization.” After expanding on the more personal stakes Elon Musk has in the makeup of the Wisconsin Supreme Court, and why, despite that, the messaging has almost entirely centered on supporting Trump’s agenda, Weigel, Sam, and Emma shift to the upcoming special elections in Florida, as they unpack the fear the GOP is facing over their dwindling margins over the last few months, highlighting some particularly brutal campaigning from Democrat Josh Weil against “unhinged,” “anti-American” Randy Fine, and the importance of tying the Right to Musk’s anti-Medicaid, anti-Social Security agenda. Wrapping up, Dave touches on the potential GOP response if these margins continue to shrink, and how DOGE has allowed them to change their messaging.

Digby then joins, as she, Sam, and Emma dive right into the genuine danger between the lines of absurdity in the Trump Administration’s Signal scandal, from the clear sign that they’re moving away from official (documented) channels to the executive role being played by psycho-White nationalist Stephen Miller. Noah Kulwin then joins, first touching on his experience taking part in the JVP protest at Trump Tower in New York over the Trump Administration’s disappearing of Columbia student activist Mahmoud Khalil, before diving deeper into the clear and thorough connection between the US’ support for fascism abroad and the descent into fascism at home, as we watch Israel resume its genocide on the Palestinian people while legal residents are picked up off the street by plain-clothes officers over pro-Palestinian speech – a Tufts student the most recent. Expanding on the global context for our current moment, Kulwin also touches on the particular role of the War on Terror in bolstering the rapid expansion of our surveillance state amid xenophobic, nationalist fervor. After expanding on the role of Jewish organizing in standing up to this fascist crackdown, Noah wraps up by emphasizing the need to Get Organized! what that means, and how to go about it at this moment. After briefly touching on the Mega Marcha, a demonstration against the Trump administration’s immigration policies, being held in Dallas this Saturday – which our planned second guest, Domingo García, chairman of the political arm of the League of United Latin American Citizens, helped organize – they wrap up the free half by highlighting Kristi Noam’s insane fascist photo-op outside of a migrant cell in El Salvador.
