  • Today’s guest is Blake Buettner, watch media veteran and Managing Editor of Worn & Wound. Given his day job at the leading value-driven watch site, we naturally spend a lot of time chatting about what a value watch looks like in 2021 and whether or not a watch with four or more zeros in the price tag can be ‘value’, On a related note we cover off the state of the micro-brand scene, and dive into two of the watch enthusiasts traditional darlings, Seiko and Grand Seiko, and what their rapid growth and changing focus (epitomised by the White Birch) means for the brand. We also find out how Blake is — indirectly — responsible for getting Andy into mechanical watches, what really makes for a daily wearer and the joy of clacky keyboards. All that plus Andy and Felix go hands-on with the Apple Watch Series 7.

  • Now that Watches & Wonders is firmly in our rearview mirrors and the dust has settled, we thought it was high time to do some soul-searching and come up with our favourite releases from the virtual fair. Felix, in typical fashion, went a little weird and focused on some less-hyped releases and, in a spectacular cop-out move, picked every single colourful watch from the fair.

Andy, however, played it relatively straight with four rock-solid choices, including a controversial Rolex, some colourful options and a knock-out Perpetual Calendar from none other than A. Lange & Söhne.

  • What were you doing in 2002? Simon' Woody' Wood was busy putting together the first DIY issue of a magazine called Sneaker Freaker. Little did he know that his passion for sneakers put onto the page would turn into one of the most influential voices in the sneaker scene.

Almost 20 years on, and Sneaker Freaker is still at the top of the game. We chat to Woody about the evolution of sneaker style, what it's like to build a media business that works so closely with brands, and, as someone who's collaborated with brands regularly, how the process works and what goes into making a cult shoe. But Woody's passion also extends to wristwear — he's a passionate G-Shock collector who has made two sell-out models, the Nightowl and the Redback. We get the story behind these models and find out why Casio was ahead of the curve when engaging their core community.

  • Adam needs a new watch. He's thinking of a Speedmaster, but he wants some more options. Which is where Watch Matchmaker comes to help. Adam sent us an email, and we fired up the search engines, converted our currencies and came up with six chronographs, both wild and wonderful.

From obscure Omega's to dressy salmon dials and a hot new heritage reissue, there's plenty of options, all of them good. The only question — which one will Adam go for?

The Autonomous-Car Chaos of the 2004 Darpa Grand Challenge Watch Matchmaker

    Adam’s Brief

I currently have my grandfathers Enicar in my collection, as well as a Hamilton Jazzmaster. I've resisted the temptation to buy other cheaper watches, as my eyes have been fixed on an Omega Speedmaster professional for a number of years, falling in love with the look and the story of the watch. I recently turned 30, and settled on the sapphire crystal with display back model. However, then your podcast came along, and now I'm not so sure. Thanks for that. I want an everyday watch, that I can beat around in. A chronograph or dive watch I think. I like a watch with history or story behind it. I've already turned 30, so I don't want to wait much longer. My budget is $7K. Thoughts are appreciated.

    Andy’s Picks

    Felix’s Picks

  • In news that will surprise absolutely no one, 2020 has been a heck of a year. But rather than focus on the negative, we’ve decided to accentuate the positive, and look back on 57 episodes of OT: The podcast and highlight some (but not all) great guests, even greater supporters (MVP Steve!) and even the odd challenge — Iceland, we’re looking at you.

And while we initially planned for this to be an easy-breezy 30 minutes of podcasting, Andy and I got a little carried away reliving the good times, something we’d fully encourage you to do too. Scroll on, and you can find links to all the episodes we’ve mentioned, and maybe some you missed.

We’ve got some great things planned for Season 2, and you can always help out by sharing our content, telling your mates (especially if they live in Iceland), and generally hyping us up.

And as always, get in touch if there’s anything you’d like to see more of in 2021.

  • Today’s guest, J. David Weiss, describes his job as ‘designing silly boats for silly people’ which, if we’re completely honest is a little bit of an understatement. The truth is that Weiss is one of the world’s leading designers of superyachts. So, to make the most of the opportunity, Felix and Andy decided to commission their own modest superyacht, the OT: Cruiser.

And while they spent the modest $30M budget, they learned some valuable tips on the finer points of yacht design. Ideal sizes, why Italy is your best choice for a shipyard, what makes helipads so tricky and some of there out there options they could go for (motorbike Pez dispenser anyone?).

Of course, Weiss has a nice watch or two, but as far as great origin stories go, it’s hard to top the Rolex he pulled out of a rubbish bin. And then there’s the bit where Felix and Andy pretend to be Australian film reviewers.
