Preached by Fr. Eric Nicolai to a group of priests in Toronto at St. Aidan's parish. Joseph Ratzinger said: Only through the Son could we learn what a Father truly is. He is the only son of God. But through baptism he has made us adopted sons and daughters. But only through the Son can we learn this truth. And this is a truth we must seek to contemplate more and more. How? By reading, by forming our mind, our heart, our conscience, our vision, so that we see everything through this lens of fatherhood.
Music: Handel, Rinaldo Opera, aria Lascia ch'io pianga, arranged for guitar by Bert Alink.

Through June 2022, in union with the whole Church, the St. Josemaria Institute podcasts, reflections and programs will be celebrating the topic of the Joy of the Family. This month, we will begin with a three-part series from Msgr. Fred Dolan offering a deeper reflection on the sacrament of marriage as a Christian vocation.
Msgr. Dolan begins this series by sharing considerations from Pope Francis’ recent Letter to Married Couples for the “Amoris Laetitia Family” Year. Drawing upon the example of Mary and Joseph, we are given an example of how to respond to unexpected circumstances with faith and confidence in God’s loving providence.
Pope Francis reminds us: “Marriage, as a vocation, calls you to steer a tiny boat across a sometimes stormy sea. Let us never forget, though, that by virtue of the sacrament of matrimony, Jesus is present in that boat; he is concerned for you and he remains at your side amid the tempest.”

In this podcast, part of our Day of Recollection resources for the month of January, Fr. Peter Armenio reflects on our call to be sowers of peace and joy in the world today as we seek to lift up one another in charity. We see in Scripture that Christ comes to us as the good news of great joy, coming to Earth to save each person from sin. Fr. Peter reminds us that we are called to be an extension of Christ, reflecting his light and love to all people, living out the mission of the universal Church.
St. Josemaria explains: “Christian apostolate is not a political program or a cultural alternative. It implies the spreading of good, infecting others with a desire to love, sowing peace and joy. We have the obligation of leading a fully Christian life, of becoming saints, of not betraying God and all those who expect a Christian to be an example and a source of truth” (Christ is Passing By, no. 124).

Fr. Eric Nicolai streamed this meditation from Ernescliff College on December 23, 2021, about the Magnificat of Our Lady (Lk 1, 46-56)
In these days as we approach Christmas, we are filled with expectation. It is a combination of deep desire, and excitement at something apparently new, even though we know exactly what is going to happen.
Let us never loose a sense of newness to our life. We really have to be aware if we start feeling blazé, and get inured to a sense of wonder that is proper to this time. The magnificat of our Lady is a way to keep sense of thanksgiving to everything we do.
This will also be available on YouTube.
Music: Canción del camino by the choir of the Roman college of Holy Mary, Rome.

The Church celebrates the Feast of the Holy Family on December 26, marking the halfway point for The Year of the Family: March 19, 2021 - June 26, 2022.
In this podcast, Msgr. Fred Dolan reflects on keys themes from Amoris laetitia, an Apostolic exhortation on love in the family written by Pope Francis. This exhortation sets forth the goal for us and our families to resemble more and more closely the Holy Family of Nazareth so that we become, as Msgr. Dolan encourages us, “leaven of a new humanity and of a concrete and universal solidarity.”

Friends, most of us are stuck in the boring and narrow confines of the ego-drama. Mary is not playing an ego-dramatic game; she is playing a theo-dramatic game. We hear of how she sets out "with haste"—the sign of the saints—and it's because she knows her mission and her purpose in God's story.

Fr. Eric Nicolai preaches at Pavillon Soulanges in Quebec on the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Today Mexicans all over the world will be singing las mañanitas, with their sombreros, guitars, and violins. Here is the account of Juan Diego and his vision of our Lady. Plus words that connect this to the Eucharist.

Fr. Eric Nicolai preaches about the mystery of the annunciation, an event, a moment in time. It was a direct communication between God who came in the form of an angel, and transmitted himself directly in the Holy Spirit. What does this tell us about Mary's vocation, and our vocation?
Preached on December 2, 2021.
It can be thought of as a precursor to pentecost.: The HS comes upon Mary and imparts to her the gift of all gifts, a divine son.
Music: Amores de estudiante by Carlos Gardel, arranged for guitar by Bert Alink.

Fr. Eric Nicolai begins the Novena to the Immaculate Conception at Ernescliff College, on November 30, 2021, feast of St. Andrew, the brother of Peter. The two became the most effective apostles ever, and they remained faithful to the end, both of them dying by crucifixion. Jesus made them fishers of men. How does this fit into the Novena?
Music: Adeste Fideles (John Wade Francis), arranged by Bert Alink (2017).

The meaning of commitment is seen in the story of the farmer who had breakfast a pair of fried eggs with Iberian bacon. Well, in that splendid breakfast involved the contribution of the hen. But the pig however, was truly committed.
Fr. Eric Nicolai preaches about freedom and commitment at Lyncroft Centre, on November 17, 2021.
Lk 14, 28: For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?
Imagine not being able to finish what we’ve begun years ago. However many years ago you were baptised, you want to finish. You want to persevere in that loyalty to God, fidelity to your vocation, that yes which began long ago, and yet you still have more ahead…
We ask: how is my tower going? a tower needs good foundations. Needs human prudence, patient daily work, so that it can weather storms, the earthquakes. But especially the role of freedom in this undertaking.
Music: Chiquinha Gonzaga (1847-1935), "Lua Branca" (white moon), played on guitar by Bert Alink.
