If you’re attuned at all to what is going on in the United States of America, you know we’re in the throes of a hotly contested race to see who will become our next President and Vice President.
The way our process works, several candidates vie to become their party’s nominee. One of the features of this contest is for each candidate to participate in at least one debate. The race is so competitive that folks argue over who won the debate. If your preferred candidate did well, to you there’s no question who won. But if your candidate didn’t do so well, well that’s another story.
The winner of a debate between political candidates may be up for discussion, but when it comes to negotiating pay, there should be no debate.
Check out this episode to hear the best times to negotiate for higher pay.

Navigating the corporate landscape takes savvy. That is especially true when it comes to negotiating pay.
But according to Harvard Business Review, women are more reticent than men to negotiate salary offers. They are less likely than men to negotiate their salaries, EVEN THOUGH they are just as successful when they do.
Glassdoor provided insight on the motivations for and hesitations with negotiating pay. They give three main reasons why women fail to negotiate when it comes to pay. Fear tops the list, proving that timidity has unintended consequences.
Take a listen to discover the primary reason why the gender pay gap has remained relatively unchanged the past 20+ years.

It may shock you to know that the gender pay gap varies by State.
For some States, it varies widely. For instance, in Alabama the female to male earnings ratio is .75. In laymen terms, that means women earn on average 75 cents for every $1.00 men earn. That makes the gender pay gap 25 cents.
Bet you can't name the State with the smallest pay gap. It's Vermont. Women earn 93 cents for every $1.00 men earn. That makes the gap 7 cents. It's not zero, but I'll take 7 cents over 25 every day of the week and twice on Sundays.
To hear more about the gender pay gap by State, take a listen to this week's episode.
If you missed a previous episode, please take a listen. You Mom's out there will want to hear Episode 67 on The Motherhood Penalty. You’d never guess that a woman’s pay decreases when she becomes a mom. But a man's income can increase when he becomes a dad. Imagine that. For my MBAs, check out Episode 68. The data shows that women with MBAs are underpaid compared to men with MBAs. And for all my attorneys out there, you will be flabbergasted to discover that women with law degrees don’t get a pass, they get trapped in the gender pay gap too. Take a listen to Episode 69 to hear the facts and stats on that.

Ever wonder why the big to-do pay transparency?
According to Payscale, the intent behind pay transparency legislation is to close the gender pay gap by forcing organizations to openly advertise pay ranges and thereby enforce pay equity. Some of the evolving legislation also requires employers to share pay data internally with existing employees.
But is it working? The jury's still out. Pay transparency is not working - yet. But it is taking the nation by storm, state by state.
Take a listen to this week's episode to find out why I believe pay transparency is what we need to make headway in closing the gender pay gap.

Guess what? This year, the gender pay gap does not close for any educational degrees — not even law degrees.
You mean to tell me that attorneys get caught too? Yes, attorneys get caught too!
But you may be thinking to yourself, “They know the law.” Yes, attorneys know the law. And they get caught too!
Although women with law degrees see one of the smaller uncontrolled gender pay gaps, they still earn 12% less than their male counterparts with law degrees.
Talk about a bombshell! But that's not all. Take a listen to this week's episode to hear how women are being trapped in the gender pay gap.

According to the recent Payscale Gender Pay Gap Report, higher education does not lead to pay equity for women. In fact, the data show that the gender pay gap sees minimal or no improvement at higher educational attainment levels compared to a high school degree.
The widest uncontrolled gap is for those with MBAs. This is not new. It has persisted year over year.
Women with MBAs take home $0.76 for every dollar that men with MBAs take home.
Don't believe me? Take a listen to this episode to hear how the facts stack up.
