Welcome to the What's Next! Podcast with Tiffani Bova.
As we approach the end of the year, I’m pausing to look back and celebrate all of the wonderful guests that I had the honor of speaking to on the show. And based on your feedback, many of these guests resonated with you as well so we’re giving you another chance to revisit the stories, insights, and lessons you loved most in 2024!
This week I'm excited to highlight an episode with Michael Bungay Stanier, otherwise known as MBS.
Despite being virtual friends for a long time, we only had the chance to meet in person this year at the Thinkers50 event, where Michael won a coaching award. If you’ve never met, I’m so delighted to introduce you to Michael. He’s best known for his book The Coaching Habit, which is the bestselling book on coaching this century and is considered a classic by none other than Seth Godin. His most recent book is How to Work with (Almost) Anyone.
He founded Box of Crayons, a learning and development company that has trained hundreds of thousands of managers to be more coach-like in organizations, from Microsoft to Gucci. His TEDx Talk has been viewed by more than a million people.
THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… anyone who wants to approach professional relationships more actively and intentionally.
TODAY’S MAIN MESSAGE… sometimes work relationships have great chemistry - you get along with your manager or team and are excited about working together. Although it’s an ideal situation, that’s rarely the case. In this episode, Michael shares his strategies for building the best possible relationships with the people you work with.
WHAT I LOVE MOST… taking a step back to learn about how we and the people around us work so that together we can amplify the best of who we are and avoid the worst of who we are.

In this conversation, Terri unpacks critical insights and practical strategies for leaders - but really anyone - to be a more impactful communicator.
KEY TAKEAWAYS:
Top mistakes people self-identify in their presentation skills.

Welcome to the What's Next! Podcast with Tiffani Bova.
This week, I’m welcoming back for a second time Terence Mauri, a global expert on the future of leadership, AI, and disruption, and really, the intersection of those three things. As the founder of the Hack Future Lab, he spearheaded a movement for leaders to find the upside of disruption and rethink leadership for a post-AI world. He has a new book out called The Upside of Disruption: The Path to Leading and Thriving in the Unknown.
THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… anyone navigating change in work or life who wants to lead with direction.
TODAY’S MAIN MESSAGE… we’ve all heard the saying, “The only constant in life is change,” and most of us would agree, considering the changes we’ve seen even just in the past several years. How do you approach leadership and innovation in times of change? Terence Mauri challenges us to think beyond incremental change and embrace bold, transformative thinking. In this episode, he discusses how leaders can stay future-ready and thrive in the face of uncertainty.
KEY TAKEAWAYS…
We’re hardwired to have a "yes, but" mindset which tends to be very reductionist. When you practice a "yes, and" mindset, you open yourself up to opportunities.
Move from KPIs (key performance indicators) to KBIs (key behavior indicators).
Prioritizing subtraction is one of the finest forms of learning.
Combat "bore-out" by aligning work with purpose and creating a culture of engagement.
WHAT I LOVE MOST… Terence reframes disruption as an opportunity when so many see it as an obstacle. He encourages listeners to lean into change with curiosity.

I have the pleasure of welcoming David Edelman to the show today. He is a senior lecturer at Harvard Business School, an executive advisor and board member to brands and technology providers, and an advisor to BCG. Previously, David was chief marketing officer at Aetna and has worked with dozens of companies on personalization, AI, and agile marketing at BCG and Digitas. Forbes has repeatedly named him one of the Top 20 Most Influential Voices in Marketing and Ad Age has named him a Top 20 Chief Marketing and Technology Officer. David is also the co-author of a new book called Personalized: Customer Strategy in the Age of AI, which has recently become a USA bestseller.
THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… anyone who wants to learn how to deliver true personalization at scale.
TODAY’S MAIN MESSAGE… customer experience is imperative to business success, but personalization remains elusive for many organizations. In this conversation, David offers his playbook on making personalization a core business strategy for organizations of any size. He also shares a detailed walkthrough of the Five Promises of Personalization.
Key Takeaways:
If you consider personalization a strategic goal, you need to be able to measure it. Compensation is often too abstract of a metric. Instead, David recommends using measures of business performance.
If you can’t make your product simpler, you need to educate your customers.
The customer experience should be getting better and better over time.
WHAT I LOVE MOST… David’s points about thinking about the flow of company interaction. Remember that when customers get bombarded, they tend to tune out. David says, “Less is more, but less that’s smarter is even more.”

Welcome to the What's Next! Podcast with Tiffani Bova.
This week, I wanted to bring back a conversation I shared a while back with the first What’s Next guest to be quoted in my book, Growth IQ. Mayur Gupta is the Chief Marketing Officer at Freshly, leading a team of marketers to make Freshly an iconic brand and drive breakthrough growth. Before Freshly, Mayur was the Global VP for Growth & Marketing at Spotify, the Chief Marketing Officer at Healthgrades, and the first-ever Global Chief Marketing Technologist at Kimberly Clark, one of the largest global consumer packaged goods companies. In 2014, Mayur was recognized as one of the “40 under 40” leading marketers in the industry by Brand Innovators, was profiled by the Harvard Business Review and the Economist as the model Chief Marketing Technologist, and also received the CMO Programmatic Award by the CMO Club. He sits on the Board of Directors of Adtalem (NYSE:ATGE) and D’Addario (private), guiding the C-Suite in their digital transformation.
THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… marketers looking for a master class of modern marketing and how to create an experience that will influence, inspire, and change a human life from one of the quintessential marketers of our time.
TODAY’S MAIN MESSAGE… Mayur brings his engineering mind to the world of marketing. His message? Your internal culture–your company culture–is key and central to the culture you are trying to build around your product. It’s important and indispensable to use everything at your disposal: math, science, and research. But ultimately, it’s all about being customer-focused, authentic, and transparent. At the core of any well-rounded, successful, and long-lasting organization is a human-centric strategy that is sincere and authentic. Your goals as an organization should always be customer-focused, and that starts within your organization with your very first customer, your employee. You cannot be customer-focused if you do not first care for and about the people you work with, because they are the brand.
WHAT I LOVE MOST… Mayur’s transparency on the fact that this is all a journey and things in our industry continue to change based on what the customer wants from us.

I have the pleasure of welcoming Mo Bunnell to the show today. He helps complex organizations grow by scaling business development skills and creating a growth-oriented culture. He's the founder of Bunnell Idea Group (BIG), which has trained tens of thousands of professionals at hundreds of organizations. He is the author of The Snowball System and has a new book out called Give to Grow: Invest in Relationships to Build Your Business and Your Career.
THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… anyone looking to grow their business and deepen client relationships in a more meaningful, human-centered way.
TODAY’S MAIN MESSAGE… in this day and age, business development isn’t about deals but relationships. Mo dives into this approach and explores how to build authentic, lasting relationships that add real value and, ultimately, drive growth.
Key Takeaways:
Mo’s 3-step process to collaborate better and drive more revenue: fall in love with their problem, give them the experience of working with them, and make a recommendation.
The skills you need to do the work after you get the “yes” are the opposite of the skills you need to get the “yes.”
Those who identify where the decision makers see value and attach to it will find the magic.
Relationship building takes time and effort. Mo recommends quarterly audits to strategically delegate or automate tasks to create more space for relationships.
WHAT I LOVE MOST… take a few minutes to make a list of the 10-15 relationships that are the most important to your future success. Mo says these are the relationships you should be focused on developing now.

This week, I’m excited to welcome Frederik Pferdt to the show. He’s the former Chief Innovation Evangelist at Google where he helped shape one of the most fabled creative cultures in the world. He founded Google's Innovation Lab, where he trained tens of thousands of Googlers to develop and experiment with cutting-edge ideas and taught groundbreaking classes on innovation and creativity at Stanford for more than a decade. He has a new book out called What's Next Is Now: How to Live Future Ready.
THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… anyone eager to learn how to proactively create their future and develop a growth-oriented mindset.
TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE… in this inspiring conversation, Frederik dives into what it means to live future-ready. He believes we each have the power to intentionally shape the future instead of waiting for it to happen. Frederik introduces his six principles that help shift to this way of thinking.
Key Takeaways:
The future isn’t something that happens to you. You have the power to create it.
We talk a lot about mindset, but Frederik introduces the idea of “mindstate” and our ability to influence a moment.
When you pay attention to your choices throughout your day and week, you’ll quickly notice that your future isn’t predetermined but something you’re actively creating.
Some situations are out of our control, but we can always control our responses and outlook.
WHAT I LOVE MOST… the sixth principle, Dimension X, or your superpower. Discovering your strengths takes time, reflection, and sometimes courage, but when you incorporate them into the way you see the future, you’re able to impact the world in a unique way.

This week, I’m joined by Jessica Kriegel. She is the Chief Scientist of Workplace Culture for Culture Partners, leading research and strategy in best practices for driving results through culture. For 15+ years, Jessica has been guiding global, national, Fortune 100, and other organizations across finance, technology, real estate, and healthcare industries on the path to creating intentional cultures that accelerate performance. And she has a book coming out called The Culture Equation, where she dives into how people think and act to get results.
THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… leaders who want to improve company culture.
TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE… what does it take to build a thriving company culture? In this episode, Jessica shares her findings and explains why traditional corporate structures aren’t cutting it anymore. She shares how leaders can create a more people-first approach that drives engagement and results.
Key Takeaways:
Stereotypes around how Gen Z and millennials impact the workforce are keeping leaders from actually seeing these employees on their team as people. Jessica says it’s not about understanding different generations but about understanding life stages.
Culture isn’t a task that can be delegated to HR. Leaders need to be closely involved in shaping it.
Leaders must be adaptable to the evolving needs of their teams.
Focusing on what’s in your control gets you out of the blame game and into your sphere of influence.
WHAT I LOVE MOST… Jessica’s technique to encourage accountability in her team is to model above-the-line thinking. She breaks it down into these four steps: see it, own it, solve it, do it.

She led the company’s digital efforts, including Peacock Equity acquiring iVillage.com, and oversaw the founding of Hulu. She was then tapped by GE to accelerate its evolution from an old-school conglomerate to a global technology-driven company. Cultivating a start-up mentality across the organization for over two decades, she catalyzed growth and novel thinking within GE, ultimately operating their Business Innovation unit. She was also the first female Vice Chair and first Chief Marketing Officer at GE in more than 20 years. She is a member of Nike’s board of directors and a Forbes World’s 100 Most Powerful Women. TODAY’S MAIN MESSAGE… Beth shares nuggets of gold gleaned from her 20-year career at GE and NBC Universal. Beth provides inspiration and guidance in an age of staggering technological advancement, the ever-stronger pull of the “next big thing,” and the gravity of the unknown. It is becoming exceedingly important to be self-aware and cognizant of the things that make our businesses human and creative. We work with and for humans, and our customers and audiences are human. Likewise, it is important that our leadership be just as rooted in our humanity. It is our honest and dynamic experience as human beings that will allow us and our businesses to thrive in a world ruled more and more by algorithms and automation.
WHAT I LOVE MOST… Beth is always looking to write her next story and live it as a courageous human being. She has learned along the way that our jobs do not define us. Who we are, the networks we create, the people we meet along the way–that’s what is important. With each new opportunity comes the next story we will create!

- From single parents to community leaders, we all have areas of influence.
- Connecting with leaders outside your industry will teach you things you’ll never figure out independently.
WHAT I LOVE MOST… you might be surprised to hear that Dave spent 10 years as a NASCAR driver and didn’t start racing until his 50s! He is proof that it’s never too late to explore a different path.

TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE… leading through a crisis requires more than just quick decision-making but resilience, adaptability, and a team-first mentality. Dr. Mayer draws on his experience to explore how leaders can navigate uncharted territory while inspiring growth and innovation.
Key takeaways:
- It’s better to build relationships than to build a resume.
- Burnout occurs when you become disconnected from your deep joy.
- There’s no such thing as a “future” leader. We’re all leading in some way.
- Everybody will fail, but those who learn to make their failures their fuel will grow from setbacks.WHAT I LOVE MOST… Dr. Mayer says the three common qualities of standout leaders are: thinking about leading as a verb, acting on it within a week, and innovating not at the speed of genius or creativity but at the speed of trust.

THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… this episode is a reality check for all of us. It is all about investing in the emotional side of our interpersonal interactions as humans both in the written word, as well as in the spoken word.
TODAY’S MAIN MESSAGE… we spend so much time talking about the academic side of leadership, growth, marketing, and sales but we forget to account for our human emotions in a field that is so inextricably tied to human interaction. No matter how much time we take to examine our communication and emotional styles, we’re still limited by our perspective, experiences and biases.

This week, I welcome Kim Scott back for the third time on the podcast. She is the author of a new book called Radical Respect: How to Work Together Better, and of course, Be a Kick-Ass Boss Without Losing Your Humanity. She is the co-founder of the company Radical Candor. Kim was a CEO coach at Dropbox, Qualtrics, Twitter, and other tech companies. She was a member of the faculty at Apple University. Before that, she led AdSense, YouTube, and DoubleClick teams at Google.
THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… anyone struggling with giving or receiving feedback in a professional setting.
TODAY’S MAIN MESSAGE… respect is critical in the workplace, especially when there are many differing opinions and styles. But how do you practically go about fostering a culture of respect? It’s not by keeping your opinions to yourself. In fact, Kim says sharing feedback and making space for disagreement is a sign of respect for one another.
Key takeaways:
Respect begins with unconditional regard for humanity and it shouldn’t need to be earned
We can disagree and do it in a respectful way
Kim’s three steps to approach a boss to share criticism are: solicit feedback, focus on the good, ask if it’s a good time to share your thoughts
WHAT I LOVE MOST… Kim says you can’t address all of the unconscious biases in the world, but you can (and should) address the ones that will get in the way of your team working together.

This week Elliott Parker joins the podcast. He is the founder and CEO of High Alpha Innovation, a venture builder that partners with corporations, universities, and entrepreneurs to co-create startups that solve compelling problems. He built his career in strategy consulting at Innosight, the firm founded by Clayton Christensen, in corporate venturing, and as an entrepreneur bringing new ideas to market. To date, he has launched over 40 venture-backed startups, and he has a new book called The Illusion of Innovation which came out earlier in 2024.
THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… business leaders and executives looking to understand the challenges of true innovation.
TODAY’S MAIN MESSAGE… in this thought-provoking episode, Tiffani sits down with innovation expert Elliott to discuss why innovation might be more illusion than reality in today’s organizations. Elliott argues that many innovative efforts are a charade and he challenges leaders to re-think their goals.
Key takeaways:
We're really good at running large organizations, but the optimization for safety and predictability comes at the cost of innovation
In nature, innovation happens chaotically and without control, something we should emulate in organizations
We need more experiments that are fast, cheap, and maybe even a little weird
WHAT I LOVE MOST… what Elliott says we can learn from Steph Curry about running big companies, “Our companies need to be taking shots close to the net, but also making sure we're doing it beyond the three-point line, where the magnitude of correctness matters a lot.”

I’m eager to welcome Leslie Zane to the show this week. She is the founder of Triggers, a CMO advisory firm rooted in behavioral science, where she champions the primacy of the instinctive mind in brand decisions. In her new book, The Power of Instinct, she shows how traditional persuasion tactics fall short to grow a brand, business, or even a social movement, and she shows what techniques work instead.
THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… leaders and marketers who want to build stronger, more memorable brands.
TODAY’S MAIN MESSAGE… do you ever wonder why some brands stick in your mind while others fade away? In this episode, Tiffani Bova chats with Leslie Zane to uncover how our instincts drive our decisions. We dive into the fascinating world of instinctive marketing and learn how tapping into the unconscious mind can transform brand loyalty.
Key takeaways:
Brands are built on accumulated memories and associations in the subconscious mind yet traditional marketing focuses on controlling the conscious mind
Direct persuasion often fails. Influencing the instinctive brain is a far faster path to change
Superior products don’t always win in the marketplace but the brands that create perceived superiority
WHAT I LOVE MOST… the difference between competitive advantage and instinctive advantage. Leslie says when a brand creates more positive associations than their competition, that's the moment a customer will make a switch.

Welcome to the What's Next! Podcast with Tiffani Bova.
In this What's Next Live, I welcome my very first Pulitzer Prize winner to the show. Charles Duhigg is a reporter and the author of The Power of Habit, which spent over three years on the New York Times bestseller list. His second book, Smarter Faster Better, was also a bestseller. He published his latest book, Supercommunicators, earlier this year, and it is (not surprisingly) also a bestseller.
Charles led the team that won the Pulitzer Prize in Exploratory Journalism in 2013 for the AI economy, a series that examined the global economy through the lens of Apple. He also received the George Polk Award, the Great Loeb Award, the Investigative Reporter and Editors Medal, the Scripps Howard National Journalism Award, the Robert F Kennedy Journalism Award, and many others.
THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… anybody who wants to improve their communication skills and learn how to connect with anybody - from colleagues to complete strangers.
TODAY’S MAIN MESSAGE: We all want to walk away from conversations feeling understood, valued, and connected, but that’s not always the case. Charles Duhigg explores the ingredients of this kind of conversation and shares how to become a supercommunicator. The good news is that anybody can form these habits and bring this level of communication to any area of their life.
Key takeaways:
- There are three buckets that all conversations fall into (practical, emotional, and social). A strong communicator will recognize and match whatever conversation they’re in
- The ultimate goal of any conversation is to understand each other
- You can prove that you’re listening by asking a deep question, repeating back what you heard in your own words, and asking if you got it rightWHAT I LOVE MOST… the story Charles shares about Felix, an FBI crisis negotiator who can connect with and disarm seemingly anybody simply by having a conversation. This story shows that being a thoughtful communicator really is a superpower.

Welcome to the What's Next! Podcast with Tiffani Bova.
I have the pleasure of welcoming Stephanie Harrison to the show today. She is the creator of the New Happy Philosophy. She's the founder of New Happy, a company helping individuals, companies, and communities apply this philosophy in their lives.
The New Happy’s art, newsletter, podcast, and programs reach millions of people around the world every month. Previously, Stephanie was the Director of Learning at Thrive Global, one of my favorite companies.
THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… anyone looking to redefine their understanding of happiness and improve their well-being, especially in the workplace.
TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE… traditionally, happiness is tied to achievements - closing a big deal, getting a promotion, moving to the corner office. We’re told to aim for perfection and achieve more and more to find happiness, yet somehow, we’re still unfulfilled.
Stephanie Harrison introduces a new concept of happiness, “New Happy” which challenges traditional notions of happiness. Instead of pursuing individual happiness through external achievements, New Happy focuses on authenticity and contributing to others' well-being. By understanding and applying these principles, individuals and organizations can foster environments that promote genuine happiness and purpose.
Key takeaways:
Using acts of kindness as a shortcut to happiness
Rewiring yourself to move away from Old Happy to New Happy
Understanding the root of most people’s unhappiness
How parents can teach children the New Happy way
Practical steps for leaders to promote happiness among their teams
WHAT I LOVE MOST… Stephanie's insight that happiness doesn't have to be a choice between self and others. You don't have to put your happiness before somebody else's or vice versa. You can do both at the same time.
