Charlie is a MASSIVELY solutions-focussed Midwife and (multi) Department Head, and does the job - and has progressed to the level she has - primarily to help the many, not just the few.
What NHS staff, like Charlie, accomplish day-in-day-out is phenomenal, given the tremendous lack of funding and support, and alongside ever growing patient needs and yes, patient expectations.
... And they don't do it for the money... Nobody would do a job like this for the money... They do it for the calling inside them, that asks them to help other humans. To heal and protect others.
Please meet Charlie.

A gorgeous person, a gorgeous soul, a neurodivergent brain, a non-binary gender statement, and just an amazing (and occasionally, tragic) story knitting all of that together; Anna's story is one of MANY paths and turns and MANY ups and downs.
The non-binary 'part' of Anna is something we're especially pleased and proud to have chatted through, because even though TWW is, of course, called 'This Woman's Work' (for now!), the ethos of it, as we hope is clear by now, is actually about promoting equality, inclusion and support; and none of those things are gender specific.
Please meet Anna.

Liz LOVES her job, so even though her sisters keep asking her when she's going to retire, her answer remains the same: 'I love my job!'. Floristry is Liz's hobby/passion and she's created a fab business doing something that she loves and something that she's really proud of.
Now that doesn't mean she wouldn't like to step back a bit and do some travelling, but retire... Never!
The noise you can hear in the background is the hustle and bustle of the shop, including some chatter from one of the staff doing a wedding consultation... And yes, most podcasts don't allow such background noise.
... But we're not most podcasts ;-)
Please meet Liz.

In this chat, Stella and Chops pick-up from Break Room 2 (with Nicky) and discuss what gender and gender equality means for Stella's generation. They also chat through what it's like as a working millennial / Gen Z right now, and how that generation view the workplace Vs their 'modern' needs.
The need for Stella's generation to enjoy their work, and indeed 'thrive' at work is clearly there - WAY more than it was for older generations at that age (who just sucked-it-up for the sake of their CV) - and yet, the modern workplace doesn't appear to have changed all that much to accommodate this need.
Stella has experienced, and has friends who are still experiencing sexism and misogyny at work, and who are pretty blimin' unhappy about it. BUT, they still don't feel they can speak up about it, let alone leave that employment, because of how that will might reflect on them and their CV.
Welcome to Break Room 3.

Gemma's story, like many of the women we pod, is both that of an underdog and that of a non-linear fashion... Because Gemma wasn't necessarily hugely academic, and because she didn't intend to become a solicitor.
She certainly didn't intent to become an IP/Trademark one.
And yet she is now both; and she's amazing at both. So much so that she now runs her own small IP practice which works with some pretty big corporate players.
Please meet Gemma.

Marie Helen's journey with her own ADHD, and indeed her work in the field of ADHD, represents up a BIG and HOT topic of conversation for millions of people worldwide. The diagnosis of it (maybe even the mis-diagnosis of it), the treatment of it (do the drugs work or don't they?), and indeed the ongoing support for people who live with it (or rather the lack of support) are all big topics of conversation online and on social, so it's clearly a job/role that is in high demand.
Now we barely scratch the surface of the world of ADHD in this chat, because it's a chat about Marie Helen, not the neurodivergence of ADHD, however, Helen's social pages and her website have loads of great information on them, so do go and check her out via our website: https://www.thiswomanswork.org/the-pod-blog
Please meet Marie Helen.

Amy and Jo run a fantastically clean and friendly soft-play centre. And perhaps most important for mums, they served the BEST coffee and cake for miles around!
Setting this business up, and indeed running it, has not been easy, as they chat through honestly; not least the impact covid had on pretty much everything from that point on...?! And they knew nothing about running a business, or indeed a soft-play business before starting it, meaning they really did have to learn 'on the job' and the hard way. Which they did.
Please meet the brilliant, Amy and Jo.

You asked us for a Speech and Language Therapist, and we delivered!
Which is great, because there are not enough SLTs in the UK, probably the world, and yet the need for them is huge; so for those considering this as a career, please do it!
Listening to Jenny talk about what kind of cases she treats, and when doing the research for the role, you realise just how many children in particular are in need of SLT support. Because as Jenny says, communication is key to EVERYTHING, and how well you can do it, can and will fundamentally shape your view of yourself, the world and your existence in it all. Jenny even quotes a crazy stat about criminals and 'offenders' and the % of them that have speech and language disorders... How might their lives have been different, if they'd received better care earlier in life?
Please meet Jenny.

Vicky mentions her dyslexia early on in the chat; not just because it's something she's keen to talk openly about, but also because it has affected her from a very young age. Back when she had no idea that she had it, wasn't remotely diagnosed for it, and as such really struggled academically, which in turn severely affected her confidence.
Her solution? To work harder, re-read and triple-check everything; in order to compensate for the fact that her writing and spelling wasn't as good as others, and to distract from the fact he brain struggles with long-term memory recall.
And it worked, because despite her struggles, Vicky's had a great career and has continued to impress everyone she's ever reported into. And now that she's 'the boss', Vicky is determined to help those that have struggled like she did.
Please meet Vicky.

Helen is a huge champion of following your own path and carving out your own unique journey. However, there was a time - a long time - she wasn't doing that, and she forgot that innate belief in herself. She was working in the corporate world, very successfully, and got swept up in it all.
However, as is FAR TOO OFTEN the case, when she had children, that corporate world unfairly and quite frankly, stupidly, spat her out; which made her dig deep, and put her big girl pants on... And somehow figure out a new way.
That new way was to go freelance, in order to earn much-needed money, whilst also getting the right work-life balance for her 2 young boys. And that freelance career saw her organically grow into what is now a successful corporate comms agency employing 13 people (and counting).
Please meet Helen.

Vicky is a Greek-Canadian / Vegas / LA / London creative, who's expressed her creativity via writing, music (band management), set design and now home/interior design (plus other stuff... it's mad?!). So if you want someone to come and restyle your house, who brings ALL of that amazing lived experience with her, book her now!
And we say 'now', because Vicky is BUSY! And in high demand.
Please meet Vicky.

Nicky is a huge champion of people - men and women - but women especially.
Her approach and care towards helping and supporting people, has seen her curate the most varied, but always very people-centric career. To the point that she's now a change specialist and gets sent around (her global media employer) to fix (BIG) problems and instigate (and manage) pretty intense change-programmes.
And she's great at it, which she believes is intrinsically linked to her femininity, and Chops and her discuss this and how her other 'pink skills' (as she calls them) have helped her far more than hinder her.
Welcome to Break Room 2.

Ruth is the kind of person we all want to be friend's with... Yep, she's that mega cool girl that we all girl-crush over and just wanted to be around.
What's more, her artistic career is only just starting... She may have taken the scenic route to get to where she is today (a brief stop-off at Vogue House wasn't too bad, though), but she's very much HERE now. And she's bursting with talent; so much that it probably shouldn't fit inside one person... However, she's not a person, she's a woman ;-)
Where she goes from here is anyone's guess. Cool, right?
Please meet Ruth.

Podding a cleaner (a good one), was on our list from day one with TWW, because it's a profession, which Chelsey herself says, often gets a bad rep. And yet, as we all know, good cleaners are like gold-dust; the results of which we all hold dear and value incredibly highly?!
What's more, (good) cleaners across the UK are in fact earning a lot more money than many other (what would be perceived as) 'higher-profile' professions. It's crazy!
Cleaning is a profession as old as time - and (wo)man - and it's something lots more of us should be keen to do, and proud to do... Just like Chelsey is.
Please meet Chelsey.

It's time to take things to the next level on This Woman's Work; which means making some videos... Which means asking women to be brave enough to not only tell their story, but to be filmed while they do... Which means having a film to show them as a test case (so they can see it and be reassured)... Which means getting someone to be filmed 'talking' in a first, test-case video.
... Which means TWW's founder, Chops, stepping up.. Although if you're listening to this on a podcast platform, and not watching it on YouTube, the fact that it's also a video, will be utterly irrelevant.
Chops has tried to be as honest as she can in this chat, within reason and with respect of people close to her; but even so, this is her truth. It's the truth of how she has been fundamentally shaped in her 46 years on this earth. It's the truth of the journey she's been on, which has ultimately brought her to where she is today... Here with you on This Woman's Work.

Imagine landing your dream job - a role that's a big step up, with a lot of responsibility, but also with heaps of possibility for your future - only for 3-weeks later, your ex-partner and the co-parenting father of your young child, to tragically die suddenly; leaving you to forevermore play sole mum and dad, whilst simultaneously managing your son's grief, your grief, and whilst trying to hold down your new 'dream' job, along with all of it's expectations.
That is what Annie had to contend with a few years back, and what she has not only survived through, but has THRIVED through; which makes her podcast EXACTLY the right chat to put out on International Women's Day weekend.
Please meet Annie.

Emily has been on quite a journey, and not necessarily a straightforward one. However, it has brought her to where she is today, and it has set her on this latest career path - this mission - to help as many mums and dads as she can.
Emily's passion and dedication to the job/role, and the topic in general, goes above and beyond nannying. She desperately wants to help fill the gap - a MAHOOSIVE WHOPPING gap - for the right amount of fair/decent care and support available for new mums and indeed working mums, or indeed working dads.
Please meet Emily.

Helen has worked for some amazing (London and Midlands) architect firms and managed some amazing projects - both commercial and residential. She even went on to become a specialist in sustainability... sorry a 'Head of Sustainability' for a large corporate. All whilst being a mum of 2 and managing her own house-build project.
Yep, Helen's bossed it!
Helen's own house build was full eco/sustainability features, as would (always) be the case, and it looked mad and cool as hell (as would also be the case).
Please meet Helen.

Given Lisa's decision to become a chef was pretty last minute at the young age of 16, shocking her family considerably (she was going to be an architect before this!); she has still gone on to manage and curate her career brilliantly.
Clearly very talented in the culinary arts, combined with an amazing work ethic, positive approach to working (and the ability to stand A LOT of misogyny from bosses and colleagues); Lisa has traveled the world with her job, cooking for celebrities and royalty, and working in the most exotic of locations... And always one phone call at a time.
Please meet Lisa.
