In 1982, he founded Search for Common Ground with a bold mission: to transform the way the world handles conflict—from confrontation to cooperation. Under his leadership, the organization became the largest peacebuilding nonprofit globally, with offices in over 35 countries and a staff of 600, tackling some of the world’s most challenging conflicts.
John’s work has taken him into the heart of conflict zones, where he developed innovative approaches to peacebuilding, using media to bridge divides in war-torn societies and fostering dialogue between deeply opposed groups. His efforts have earned global recognition, including a Nobel Peace Prize nomination for Search for Common Ground in 2018.
Beyond his work with Search for Common Ground, John is a Skoll Awardee for Social Entrepreneurship, an Ashoka Senior Fellow, and a visiting scholar in peacebuilding and social entrepreneurship at Leiden University. He is also an accomplished author, known for his books on intelligence and peacebuilding, including The CIA and the Cult of Intelligence, a New York Times best-seller, and the award-winning Search for the “Manchurian Candidate.”
John’s upcoming book, “From Vision to Action: Remaking the World Through Social Entrepreneurship,” dives into his approach to negotiation, conflict resolution, and social entrepreneurship. It’s essential reading for anyone passionate about making a real difference.

Bio
María Antonia Pérez is a committed and passionate Colombian woman with over 20 years of experience in social transformation. She has developed impactful processes in the social, cultural, and educational fields, leveraging strategic and creative thinking, education for peace, and social transformation. Her work spans multiple sectors, particularly with international non-profit organizations.
María Antonia has contributed to art, peace culture Peacebuilding, and social transformation projects in Colombia, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, and Japan. She has served as an advisor to the international NGO Peace Boat, promoting peace education programs, sustainable tourism, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. With a Master's Degree in Management of Social Innovation and Local Development, and as a Rotary Peace Fellow, a Positive Peace Activator and a Asia-Pacific Leadership program alumni, she has made significant strides in fostering peace and cultural citizenship.
Previously, María Antonia worked on Cultural Citizenship positions in Bogota and Medellin with the City halls leading projects of Art for social transformation.

Bio: Andrea Longton is an award-winning author and professional social justice investor. She has raised over $1 billion for social justice investments in the United States and has advised on another $1.5 billion worldwide. In addition to her professional experience, Andrea manages her family’s finances, including their own social justice investment portfolio.
Her professional experiences include positions at Opportunity Finance Network, Freddie Mac, Capital Impact Partners (now Momentus Capital), and Delphos International. With a Master's in Behavioral and Decision Sciences from the University of Pennsylvania, a Master's in Philosophy, and extensive experience across Latin America, the US, Africa, and the Middle East, Andrés applies his expertise to public policy, social norms, and behavioral change communications, developing innovative interventions to overcome sociopsychological and cultural barriers. His consulting work spans these regions, focusing on applying behavioral science and technological innovations to create positive organizational dynamics and trust-building in weak institutional settings.

About Sushma: Sushma Raman is the President and CEO of the Heising-Simons Foundation, and serves on the Board of Directors. She is an interdisciplinary and experienced philanthropic leader, bringing over two decades of experience in launching, scaling, and leading social justice and philanthropic programs and collaboratives. This includes building the capabilities of grassroots human rights organizations and their leaders. Sushma has also taught graduate courses in the public policy schools at UCLA, USC, Tufts Fletcher School, andHarvard Kennedy School.
She serves as a Board Member at Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights. Prior to joining the Foundation in 2023, she was the Executive Director of the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy since 2015. Her extensive background also includes roles at the Ford Foundation, where she launched and managed a $100 million global initiative to support emerging human rights and women’s funds, and at the Open Society Foundation, coordinating a significant grantmaking program. Additionally, Sushma led the Southern California Grantmakers association as its President from 2007 to 2012.

Ruby is an Adivasi cultural practitioner, documentarian, writer, and publisher based in Kolkata. Her documentation initiative grew out of a need to claim Adivasi stake in historical and contemporary social, cultural, and literary spaces. Bio: Angela Bruce-Raeburn is the founder of DiverseDEV, a consultancy designed to support international development organizations, NGOs and civil society groups working to improve the lives of marginalized people anywhere in the world. Ms. Bruce-Raeburn is committed to issues around public health and its impact on vulnerable populations having previously served as the Regional Advocacy Director, Africa and Asia at the Global Health Advocacy Incubator – which focused on strengthening advocates for prevention of non-communicable diseases impacting low and middle-income countries. Prior to that, Ms. Bruce-Raeburn worked as the Senior Policy Advisor for the Humanitarian Response in Haiti at Oxfam in the aftermath of the earthquake from 2010 to 2013.
A French speaker, Angela holds three master’s Degrees, in Public Administration, Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution. In addition, Angela holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and French from Lincoln University, PA which was founded in 1854 as the nation's first degree-granting Historically Black College and University, or HBCU.
Angela has written op-eds on development, race and privilege including Wait Until They See your Black Face and International Development has a Race Problem. Angela’s current work is consulting and advising on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Training, speaking to groups about equity and racial diversity and providing guidance to international organizations on developing a DEI ethos for their organization. The goal of this work is to share a perspective of how the lived experiences of racialized people intersect with an international development and a humanitarian system that is inequitable, unjust, and lacking in accountability.
