Ever heard of One Health? You might not have, but, you do know about Q fever! In this piece Jessi Hekmati an international specialist on the topic explains how they connect.
What is One Health?
One Health is the collaborative approach that recognizes the interconnectedness we share with other humans, animals and our shared environment. More specifically, the health of animals directly impacts the health of human beings and vice versa. As farmers and individuals who work with sheep and animals, it is important to take necessary steps to prevent the spread of zoonotic disease outbreaks amongst animals and humans. These three steps include quarantine, implementing a biosecurity plan, and proper disposal of animal carcasses.
1. Quarantine: When purchasing new livestock, be sure to quarantine them in a separate pen for 2-4 weeks before introducing them to the rest of your herd or flock.
2. Biosecurity Plan: A proper biosecurity plan can prevent disease outbreaks, reduce costs, put you in compliance with regulations, increase sustainability, and safeguard public health for animals and humans.
3. Proper Disposal: When an animal dies from a disease there are proper guidelines to be followed to prevent an outbreak.
Implementing steps like the three steps mentioned can prevent future outbreaks and together we can mitigate the spread of zoonotic disease, creating a safer environment for humans, animals and our shared home! For more information on zoonotic disease outbreak prevention, biosecurity plans, and general educational material, contact Jessi Hekmati, MPH at Small Ruminant Solutions.
