'Ollie Lishman is one of a number of artists who have made their mark in Australia and moved over to Europe to continue making waves. The Naarm/Melbourne native is now based in Berlin and mixing up the city's sounds with his own style brought from home. He calls it simply 'groovy electronic music' and it takes in big beats, infectious energy and smart samples from across the hard dance spectrum.
He recently made his production debut on Hot Meal and offered up four colourful, full-fat cuts with plenty of character and endlessly infectious bounce. He follows up that up with a fine entry into our mix series which showcases just what you will get from him in the club in 2025. 'Justin Jay has had a landmark year by anyone's standard, and it has been filled with firsts: he debuted on Boiler Room (out next year) and played the first edition of our festival in Croatia while also touring across Europe and the United States. His first release came four years ago but he is still only 22 and brings an infectious sense of energy and positivity to everything he does, including his unique blend of house, techno, garage and breaks.
Justin pulls out all the stops for us with this week's mix, which is entirely made up of unreleased originals and remixes that he has made either alone or in collaboration with friends like Dusty Dan, Freeman713, Kara Okay and gusted amongst many more. It's punchy and moves at a swift, captivating pace with plenty of uplifting feels along the way. 'FKA.M4A very quickly became a real fan favourite. After growing up in London, it was a move to Berlin that accelerated their career and led to sets at cult places like Panorama Bar. A friendship with Peggy Gou developed after a support slot on the same bill and now FKA.M4A's proudly unpretentious sound mixes up Italo disco, high NRG and leftfield techno everywhere.
Here FKA.M4A speaks about the value of being mentored by Peggy Gou, the importance of diversity in the scene and offers some great background on their upcoming debut EP which has been many years in the making and shows plenty of different sides to the artist's sound. 'Disfreq is a brotherly duo that loves acid, hardware and raw drums. Whether making dark techno or harder styles they bring inescapable energy to all they do. The pair hails from Donegal in Ireland but have made a global mark with their diverse releases on the likes of Diynamic, Turbo Recordings and Siamese and bring an innate understanding of the dance floor to whichever DJ booths they play in.
Their underground sounds have topped plenty of charts and picked up millions of streams but Disfreq admit here that they would always rather innovate than repeat themselves. 'LOLSNAKE sits right at the heart of Berlin's bubbling underground as a DJ, promoter and label founder. Born in Oakland, California but with Iraqi heritage, she is the founder of the long-running queer party Weeeirdos which she started in order to "arouse fun and freedom" in an often all too serious scene. The party plays out at Säule but has also been hosted at the likes of Berghain while LOLSNAKE has played all over the globe.
Her electrifying sets continually explore new musical ground where trance, techno, acid and bleep all collide. She plays with a sense of unabashed adventure, isn't afraid to drip a curveball and often looks for musical mischief in her sets. All of that is evident in the mix she has put together for us this week, and it comes with an interview in which Danielle Lumma Rahal talks about studying neuroscience in Manchester, the motivation behind starting Weeeirdos and what she thinks dance music can do better. 'Good luck finding out much biographical information about Janis Zielinksi. We asked, but the German remained tight-lipped, so instead we're left only with his music as a window into his world. It is, make no mistake, high energy and colourful with shiny arps, trance melodies and an irresistible sense fun. That is not what you usually get from typical German house or techno producers but, he explains, he takes plenty of inspiration from the UK and Dutch scenes.'
