  • This week to kick off Season 3 we welcome Children's TV megastar Nikky Smedley for a chat about her pivotal role playing Laa-Laa in the original Teletubbies. I was lucky enough to share a venue with Nikky during this year's Edinburgh Fringe which led to our chance meeting and subsequent podchat. If you want to know what it was really like to be inside that big yellow costume, then this is the episode for you.

  • Until brand new episodes drop in September, we're hijacking the podcast feed to bring you a special 'Live' from EdFringe episode with artist Chris Dobrowolski that's nothing to do with telly. It's just us discussing our experiences in putting on our respective shows at this year's fringe and all the ups and downs it brings.

  • This week welcome our first proper West-Ender Anna-Jane Casey to the podcast. Currently starring as Sybil in 'Fawlty Towers-The Play', A.J. is at the top of her game, having starred in almost every musical you can think of. In fact, in turns out that she was in the very first West End show I ever saw. We discuss a myriad of subjects including Dean Gaffney's entrance into the jungle in 'I'm a Celeb', the PTSD of living through a global pandemic and why it might be time to bring back the word Pussy. A.J. loves a challenge, which is why she would quite like to be a contestant on 'SAS-Who Dares Wins' and have 'staff' spit in her face. She explains why John Cleese is a master of comedy before leaving us with something of a motto for life: 'if you've not cleaned your own u-bend you've lost the concept of life'

  • This week we welcome U.S. Stand-up Mike Lukas to the podcast for a chat about all things comedy. We talk about his family's Lithuanian roots and the fear of Russian invasion that still haunts the community. Mike explains why people tend to fear change, regardless of the reasoning behind it and why the world might just need a reset. We chat way too much about hair, baldness and wigs before settling into a convo about Mike's Funny Muscle books and the mechanics of building a comedy set. We then tiptoe around the tricky topics of the day and discuss pushing back against our own programming when trying to adapt to new ways of thinking. Mike takes us through his journey as a stand-up, from sweaty clubs to performing at the Montreal Comedy Festival, which in turn led to him being booked on the Tonight Show and Conan, where he rubbed shoulders with celebrities such as Mr T. Subsequently Mike was booked to perform on the Second City comedy tour which ultimately landed in Las Vegas during 9/11, where he pranked the residents of his apartment complex along with his room-mate Jason Sudeikis.

  • This week we welcome director Paul Andrew Williams to the podcast to talk about his various projects including his brilliant spooky revenge crime thriller 'Bull', his four part Cary Grant Biopic 'Archie', as well as his upcoming dramatisation of the events surrounding the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes at Stockwell Tube station in 2005. Paul explains how he struggles to pinpoint genres and finds it hard to watch his own early work. He also explains why he's drawn towards true stories and subjects that deal with the father/son dynamic. We also briefly discuss the failures of the UK postal system and how a family encounter with Steven Seagal left me feeling perplexed. Paul heaps praise onto Stephen Graham, who starred in his TV drama 'The Walk-in' and gives us a tease of his upcoming movie 'The Nest' starring Andrea Riseborough and Vanessa Redgrave.

  • This week we welcome the award winning comedian and author Rosie Holt to the podcast to chat about the election and how her Tory MP character might sway the outcome, by way of her new book 'Why we were right'.

We discuss Rosie's similarities to Dua Lipa and why she'll never go on Strictly, plus why season 7 of Friends just isn't funny. Rosie explains how the X-files left her traumatised and why she cannot abide True Crime. We also discuss our most hideous jobs and admit to never having watched a single David Attenborough nature documentary.

For an extra treat you'll also get to hear how I speak using A.I. The Future is here, and the future is...well, a bit naff to be honest!

  • This week we welcome the fantastic comedian and actor Nick Helm to the podcast for a chat about his comedy beginnings, his love for Harry Hill and why he's listening to every Alice Cooper album in order whilst on tour. • This week we welcome the brilliant actor and character comedian Alex Lowe to the podcast, recorded backstage at The Tyne Theatre during his tour of Clinton Baptiste's RollerGhoster. We talk about spooky stuff including ghosts and the unscrupulous tactics used by touring psychics, as well as the influences that informed the creation of Clinton Baptiste and his back story. Alex takes us on a journey through his career in television and radio, as well as how he first took to the West End stage aged just thirteen. Alex explains some of the more difficult situations he finds himself in whilst touring as Clinton, and how a changing audience can be problematic in the current era. We also discuss how the BBC can sometimes come across as patronising whilst trying to appear both inclusive and impartial, and why certain comedy references might not quite cut it with a younger crowd, especially if you name drop Judith Chalmers!

  • Today on The podcast we have 'friend of the pod' Stefania Licari popping in for a zoom-chat all about her process in preparing for the Edinburgh Fringe. Stefania lifts the lid on the moment that changed her life forever and set her on course to being a comedian, and why she is planning to diverge away from medical comedy. There isn't much telly chat this week, just a passing mention of E.R, but it's still an interesting listen nonetheless.

  • This week we welcome the beloved prankster, broadcaster and author Dom Joly to the podcast. I was lucky enough to talk to Dom backstage before one of his performances of 'The Conspiracy Tourist' whereby he opened up extensively about the trials and tribulations around his seminal Channel 4 show Trigger Happy TV, including scenes he couldn't air and having no control over the shoddy American remake. He also talks about how his follow up TV show 'This is Dom Joly' was painfully misunderstood, and how he really felt whilst participating in 'Celebrity Island with Bear Grylls'. Dom shares his love of Gogglebox and reality TV in general, and reveals how he'd still rather have made it as a musician than been successful in comedy. Dom now finds joy in travelling and writing his books, the latest of which deals with the growing problem of online Conspiracy theories including why some people think Finland might not actually exist.

  • This week's guest is the multi-talented writer Giles Paley-Phillips who chats about his various projects, including his film company, writing career and his many podcasts. We find plenty of common ground along the way including the difficulty in finding time to read, writing to a soundtrack, and even being at the same Glastonbury Festival, although Giles was performing whilst I was a mere punter. We also discuss the annoyance of having to rely on social media whether we like it or not, and how influencers are gaining power over the commissioning of new TV projects. Giles shares his love for Columbo and his disdain for the resurgence of game shows, while I somehow raise the topics of MAFS and Naked Attraction yet again, but come on, how can I not?

  • This week's guest is the highly entertaining Professor Richard Wiseman, who is not only a psychologist, author and magician, but also a podcaster. In this conversation we discuss our experiences with the paranormal, including lucid dreaming and theatrical superstitions, whilst exploring the psychology behind fear and belief. I explain the challenges of overcoming a criminal mindset while Richard recounts anecdotes from his early appearances on television and how he overcame nervousness thanks to Richard Madeley. We also discuss the difficulty of suspending your disbelief while watching TV, the importance of authenticity in comedy and the demise of event television. Richard also explains why he has no interest whatsoever in music and is therefore immune to jingles.

  • In a change to the current schedule we find ourselves with a curve ball of an episode that it is in effect something of an announcement. This might be a podcast or a therapy session, you decide. In this episode Steve interviews himself and discusses the idea behind his upcoming debut Edinburgh show and all the trials and tribulations leading up to it. They say talking to yourself could well be a sign of madness, so at least one of these Steves is in trouble.

Trigger warning: There is talk of various unsavoury subjects that some may find troubling. Please keep this podcast away from children, the religious and fans of the monarchy. You've been warned.

  • This week my guest is the wonderful Swedish actor Per Lasson, who joined me on his day off from filming Season 3 of 'Tunna blå linjen' to chat about such varied subjects as uncomfortable age gaps, close bonds formed in the workplace, and why comedy and horror do not mix. We ponder why Scandinavian TV has soared in popularity in recent years and why the anglicisation of their titles are sometimes way off. Per also tells us about his new project 'Whiskey on the Rocks', an amazing true story about a Nuclear Russian submarine that ran aground in Sweden in 1981, and explains how he deals with his new found fame. We also have a wee chat about the sometimes problematic films that are screened on both planes and ferries and why A.I. might not be such a bad thing after all.

  • Today on the pod we have the absolute legend that is Bernie Clifton. Fresh from releasing his autobiography 'Crackerjack to Vegas' Bernie chats about his failed attempts to become a plumber which in turn led him to join the RAF and fly to football matches in Cold War bombers. Bernie talks warmly about his comedy cohorts including Bob Monkhouse and Les Dawson, the latter urging him to become a prop comic, something Bernie is grateful for to this day. Learn how Oswald the Ostrich came into being and why Bernie once took him up in a microlight aircraft to appease a reporter from The Daily Mirror. Bernie is clearly touched to be referenced in an Inside No.9 episode and speaks fondly of all involved. He also spills the beans on the televisual debacle that was 'It's a Royal Knockout', along with behind the scenes anecdotes from his life in TV including the seminal kids TV Show 'Crackerjack'.

  • This week's guest is the wonderful Jarred Christmas, who joined me backstage at The Tyne Theatre for a chinwag just before actual Christmas. We chat about bungee jumping in New Zealand, the magic of cash-back in the early 2000s and the role of social media in shaping the future of television. Jarred explains how the TV show Friends introduced him to the concept of different religions and explains why he'd rather throw a mince pie out of the window than eat it.

  • This week's guest is the indubitably talented comedian Olga Koch. In this convo, we discuss the rise of prestige TV and its impact on storytelling, how a mini-series might just be the best tonic in a time of over saturation, and how impressive Veronica Mars was in juggling so many story arcs. Olga explains how she grew up watching heavily edited episodes of Sex and the City on Russian TV and why she can't stand Pranks. We also chat about her experience of working on the film 'The Courier' and why she'd absolutely love to be on The Bachelorette.

  • This week we welcome the comedy legend Sam Simmons to the pod. Listen as he showers Come Dine With Me, Dave Lamb and trashy UK TV with love and ponders why Australia has never had a sitcom that has truly broken through internationally. Sam introduces me to the hilarious 'David's Dead' moment from celebrity Big Brother 2016 and explains why he dislikes the term Dramedy. Although he loves acting and performing, Sam has decided that it might well be time to get a proper job, which is why he is now selling sausages at the Adelaide Fringe.

Now for trigger warnings, there's a bit of chat regarding suicidal ideation and intrusive thoughts, so feel free to skip over those parts if you find such subjects uncomfortable,

  • Today we have a fabulous guest, the wonderful Mark Trevorrow, a man best known for performing as the hilarious comedy character 'Bob Downe'. We talk extensively about Bob's meteoric rise to fame in the UK after conquering the raucous late night audiences in Edinburgh, how he stays upright during his comedy cruises and how he starred in one of the first ever Digital TV shows 'Bob Downe - All Over Britain'. Mark sings the praises of Deadloch, Paul O'Grady and Kath & Kim, a show in which Mark played the brilliant character Darryl - just don't ask him about the American remake!

  • This week we welcome the hilarious Rob Rouse to the podcast. He joins us post toe-surgery to discuss the madness of the Edinburgh Fringe, canned laughter in sitcoms and how YouTube tries to emulate what used to happen by chance in the days before delayed live TV. We share our love of Stacey Solomon's 'Sort Your Life Out' and get nostalgic about 1970s kids TV theme tunes. Rob explains why you couldn't follow a Madhur Jaffrey recipe whilst sitting on the toilet and why he's conducting the biggest ever survey into TK Maxx pant cages.
